NEXT SUNDAY
Immaculate Heart
To Hold Book Fair
“Come to the Fair’’- the
Book Fair, that is, - will be the
clarion call to all parishioners
and friends of Immaculate Heart
of Mary Church and School on
Sunday, April 28th.
Weather permitting, stands
will be set up in a section of
the upper parking lot adjacent
to the rectory where young and
old alike may have a “look-
see” at the many volumes de
stined to stock the school li
brary. These are highly-select-
ive books which will serve Im
measurably in the spiritual and
cultural development of the en
tire student body.
PARISHIONERS and friends
AID TO U.S. BISHOP
are urged to make the Book
Fair a financial success by
contributing the cost (or more,
if desired) of individual volumes
which range from $2 - $5. St
ickers inscribed with the names
of donors will be placed in
side the books as lasting
mementos or, if desired, mem
orials man be made.
As everyone knows, good
books not only open up new
horizons to the ever-inquiring
mind, but also offer priceless
and enduring friendships from
the moment Johnny can read.
It is fervently hoped that the
Book Fair, with generous sup
port from the entire parish,
will be a financial success.
Puerto Rican Named
Coadjutor Of Ponce
VATICAN CITY, April 19
(Radio, NC) Pope John XXIII has
appointed Bishop Luis Aponte
Martinez Coadjutor with right
of succession to Bishop James
E. McManus, C.SS.R., Qf Ponce
Pureto Rico.
This means that Bishop
Aponte, a Puerto Rican, will
automatically become Bishop
of Ponce on the death or re
tirement of Brooklyn-born Bis
hop McManus, who is 62 and
has been Bishop of Ponce since
1947. Bishop Aponte, 40, was
consecrated a bishop in Oct
ober, 1960, to serve as Auxi
liary to Bishop McManus. A
native of Lajas, which is with
in the Ponce diocese, he be
comes the first native of Pue
rto Rico designated to become
head of a Puerto Rican See.
Bishop McManus, who had
long been at odds with the
regime of Puerto Rico’s Gov.
Luis Munoz Marin, was one
of the leaders in the Church's
condemnation of Munoz Mar
in’s Popular Democratic party
prior to the 1960 elections.
The bishops were critical
of the party's stand on such
issues as birth control and
released-time religious edu
cation. They issued two past
oral letters in October, 1960,
declaring the moral and reli
gious philosophies of the party
"anti - Christian” and “anti-
Catholic," and forbidding
Catholics to vote for Popular
Democratic candidates. But
Munoz Marin and his party won
an overwhelming victory at the
polls.
Gov. Munoz Marin was re
ceived in audience by Pope
John a year ago, and since
then conciliatory gestures have
been made by both Church and
State leaders in Puerto Rico.

LONDON, April 16 (NC)—A
Church of England Scriptural
commission is proposing to re
move the word “hell’’ from the
official Anglican translation of
the Psalter, the Book of Psalms.
The work of the commission,
carried out under the aegis of
Anglican Archbishop Donald
Coggan of York, must be ap
proved by the annual convocat
ions of both Canterbury and
York. The Church of England
has already dropped “hell''
from its catechism.
THE NEW version would
bring the Anglican Psalter more
closely in line in some respects
with the Psalm text of the Con
fraternity of Christian Doctrine
in the United States, the offi
cial American Catholic vers
ion.
Thus Psalm 9, Verse 17 would
re*d: "The wicked shall be
given over unto the grave..."
The old King James version
gives it as "The wicked shall
be turned into hell..."
The Douay-Challoner trans
lation, for generations the offi
cial Catholic version in Eng
lish, also renders the passage
as "Hie wicked shall be turn
ed into hell..." But the Con
fraternity version gives it as
“To the nether world the wick
ed shall turn back...” And the
late Msgr. Ronald Knox, who
was commissioned by the Eng
lish Catholic Hierarchy to
translate the Bible, translated
the same verse to read: "To
the place of death of wicked
must return...”
Pope May Go
VATICAN CITY (Radio, NC)
—Vatican officials have decli
ned to confirm or deny a re
port that His Holiness Pope

Parish Holds Interracial
Meeting For Inter-Faith
ST. LOUIS (RNS) — What
is believed to have been the
first interreligious meeting of
its kind ever held by a parish
in the St. Louis archdiocese
took place here in St. Roch's
Catholic church parish hall.
About 400 persons, includ
ing about 100 non-Catholics,
attended the meeting. Rabbi Ro
bert P. Jacobs, director of
B'nai B'rith Hillel Foundation
for Washington University,
called it a “most historic meet
ing in the history of St. Louis
for all its generations.”
“I HAVE never before been
invited by a Catholic priest
to speak at a meeting like this,"
he said, adding: “The Roman
Church has invited you and me
to find the binding force, the
cement, to bring us together.
It is a historic beginning."
The Rev. Anthony J. Mor-
ley, rector of Trinity- Episco
pal church, pointed out that in
the ecumenical, or unity, move
ment of Protestants and Catho
lics there is "the same basis,
the same driving force, and
the same ultimate goal.”
The immediate goal, how
ever, is different, he said. “The
greatest thing that has happened
for the Roman Catholic ecumen
ical movement,” he said, “is
that the Roman Catholics have
set their goal as reform.” He
added that the Protestant goal
is "cooperation and communi
cation.”
“IF THERE can be a sort of
swap both will be better off,”
Mr. Morley added. “The Pro
testants should accept as an
ecumenical obligation self
scrutiny and self-reform. The
Roman Catholic Church could
adopt somewhat more sympath
etically the World Council of
Churches cooperation with oth
er denominations.”
