POPE JOHNS EXAMPIJ:
Stevenson Lauds Peace
CHICAGO, (NC)—Adlai E. Ste
venson said here younger people
are especially sensitive to the
conviction "that nowadays all
wars are civil wars and ail
killing is fratricade."
He addressed 1,100 guests
Thursday night at LfcPaul Uni
versity’s annual Scholarship
Dinner.
"The movement takes many
forms—multilateral diplomacy
through the United Nations, the
search for world peace through
world law, the universal desire
for nuclear disarmament, the
sense of sacrifice and ser
vice in the Peace Corps, the
growing revulsion against Jim
Crowism, the belief that dig
nity rests in man as such and
all must be treated as ends,
not means,” said the U. S. Am
bassador to the United Nations.
"But whatever its form, I be
lieve that far from being in any
sense an enemy to patriotism,
it is a new expression of the
pietas and respect for life from
which all true love springs,"
he said.
"WE CAN truly begin to per
ceive the meaning of our great
propositions—of liberty and
equality—if we see them as part
of the patrimony of all men. We
shall not love our corner of the

planet less for loving the planet
too, and resisting with all our
skill and passion the dangers
that would reduce it to smould
ering ruins," said Stevenson.
The Ambassador said he took
his theme "from a great Ca
tholic leader who, is recent
years, has shown the world
what vigor, what energy a pro
foundly paternal love can bring
to the great concerns of human
ity. I refer of course to Pope
John.
"IT IS clear that for him
the human race is not a cold
abstraction but a single pre
cious family whose life, in
terests, responsibilities and
well being are a constant liv
ing preoccupation," said Ste
venson.
The fourth annual $ 100-a-
plate, formal banquet raised
more than $100,000 for the
university's scholarship fund.
