CONDEMNS “SUPER-PA TRIOTS” Stevenson Contrasts Pop Approach To Extremists CHICAGO -NC Adlai E. Stevenson contrasted His Holi ness Pope John XXIII’s ap proach to international affairs with that of "self-styled patri ots" who oppose all inter national action. Stevenson, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, said these two attitudes create “a remark able paradox." The Pope, leader of “the world’s most ancient Christian Faith," proclaims "the needfor die boldest innovation in the ordering of our international relations," he said. YET, AT the same time, here in America—still a new country and formed moreover in a good radical and even utopian vision—here in America, self- styled patriots denounce all as pects of international action as betrayal, urge the removal of the United Nations from Ameri can soil, bombard senators and excite credulous people about plots to police America with African troops and hand it over to the UN, censor books for mentioning UNESCO, and brood over heaven knows what dark connections between interna tionalism and communism," Stevenson said. Stevenson praised Pope John for his statements on inter national relations, including his social encyclical Mater et Ma- gistra and his peace encyclical Pacem in Terris. Addressing the annual scho larship dinner of De Paul Uni versity, he said it is "clear" that for Pope John "the human face is not a cold abstraction, but a single precious family whose life, interest, responsi bilities and well being are a constant and loving preoccupa tion." HE SAID the Pope does not leave the problem of peace at the level of "abstraction." He added: "In Mater et Magistra he specifically underlined the duty of the rich nations to conduct ANSWER TO LAST WEEK’S PUZZLE their economic policies in such a way that the development of proper communities is foster ed. “In Pacem in Terris he re commends a world authority as the crown of the subsidiary authority of states and com munities, and specifically com mends the United Nations Or ganization. . .*’ Austell First Communion The children of the First Holy Communion Class of St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Austell recently received the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist at the Noon Mass. Father Leo P. Tlirgeon offi ciated. The children marched in pro cession into the Church and were led by the Altar Boy, Thomas Price, to their places in front of the church.
