Parental Obligation
To Fight Obscenity
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (NC)~ Mrs.
Kathryn Granahan, Treasurer
of the United States, said here
that parents have a right to be
"deeply concerned" about the
“frightening" problem of ob
scenity.
"But it must be fought in
telligently by encouraging
children to see the reading of
good literature as a joy and
as a subject of discussion,"
she said.
MRS. Granahan, a former
congresswoman from Pennsyl
vania, was a leader in anti
obscenity efforts as chairman
of a House postal operations
subcommittee. She expressed
her views on censorship and
obscenity' in a talk to a con
vention of the League of
Catholic Parent - Teacher
Association (May 24).
She stressed the importance
of the home environment in
guarding children against ob
scenity and said:
"There must be the kind of
home emvironment in which
the child shares learning ex
periences and reading ex
periences with a family— a
home environment in which
books suitable for children are
read with the child, and dis
cussed and used as further

stepping stones for futher
learning experiences shared
between parent and child."
MRS. GRANAHAN empha
sized that family attitudes are
controlling. "For instances/*
she said, "some parents find
it hard—almost impossible—
to discuss sex matters with
their children for fear of tell
ing them 'too much.' Instead
they tell the children far too
little. And there is a wall.
"The child decides either that
the parent is too dumb to know,
or has no intention of sharing
any knowledge. So he is in a
receptive mood for knowledge
outside the home."
She termed this type of home
"the happy hunting ground" for
the obscenity peddler. "He
counts on a certain percentage
of such homes turning up in
any mailing list to children."
Milledgeville
Society Picnic
MILLEDGEVILLE — The Sa
cred Heart Altar Society had the
annual picnic for the Catholic
patients at Milledgeville Sta
te Hospital on Wednesday, May
22nd, at the Log Cabin on the
Hospital grounds.
The lunch served was baked
ham sandwiches, potato salad,
celery, carrot sticks, pickles,
ice cream, cake and tea.
The picnic was financed by
the benefactors who contribu
ted, so generously, to the Chr
istmas party.
It was climaxed with the sing
ing of Irish songs, led by the
pastor, Father Joseph Ware.

Christ The King Swim Award
Christ the King is the proud
possessor of the 1st place Paro
chial swimming trophy. The
score was a dead heat between
CK and St. Thomas More coming
into the swimming of the relays.
The individual events had been
very evenly divided with Our
Lady of Assumption a close
third and Marist sweeping the
14 year old boys events. Betsy
Foni gave CK an early start
by winning second place In the
diving and her team mates
Peggy Starr and Patrice
McFarland winning 3rd and4th.
Then the little 8 year olds
lined up for the relays. CK
swept the boys and girls both
by winning first place and then
the 10 year old boys and girls
both took first r The other
relays were quite even and CK
finished with 319 points to STM
273.
FOUR families contributed
86 individual points and their
youngsters swam in five relays.
The Durdens, the Hansens, the
Shivelys and Tracys contributed.
10 swimmers and they all made
the finals.

anchor man on the 1st place
relay. Chris Hansen won 17
individual points, swimming 3
events - 2nd in brest and butter
fly and 1st in backstroke. Neil
who is only 7 years old, won
12 points, 1st in back and 2nd
In fly and then swam anchor
man in the 8 and under boys
relay, which took first place.
The Combs family performed
with Dorothy moving up to 14

11. The Stapletons, Jerry and
John Chapman gave sterling
performances. Jerry was the
mainstay of the 12 year old boys
and John electrified the crowd
by taking a 1st in the butterfly
