POPE JOHN AND HIS PREDECESSOR
RECEIVES RED BIRETTA
LEAVES FOR CONCLAVE
New Pontiff
Angelo Cardinal Roncalli, Patriarch of Venice, like
another citizen of Bergamo, Pope St. Pins X, is shown on
the day he left his archepiscopal See to join his fellow
Princes of the Church in the Papal Conclave. This
conclave elected him Pontiff on October 28, 1958.

is on his way to attend
a meeting of Cardinals
shortly before the Con
clave which would elect
him Pope John XX1I1. He
had just arrived from Ven
ice following the death of
Pope Pius XII.
Named a Cardinal while serving as Papal Nuncio to
t ranee, a 400-year-old tradition is followed when French
President Vincent Auriol presented the red biretta to
future Pope John XXIII, on January 16, 1953. He went
to Rome later to receive the Red Hat from Pope Pius XII.

PAPAL DELEGATE TO LOURDES
His Holiness Pope John XXIII is shown with his immediate predecessor, Pope Pius XXII
when he was about to depart as Cardinal Legate to Lourdes in March, 1958. Pope Pius
raised the future Pope John to the College of Cardinals in January, 1953, and appointed
him Patriach of Venice, where he served until his election to the Papacy.
This medal by Italian
sculptor Giacomo Manzu
commemorated the open
ing (October 11) of the
Second Vatican Council.
His Holiness Pope John
XXIII, whose likeness ap
pears on both sides, dis
tributed the medal to mark
the historic beginning of
the 21st ecumenical coun
cil.

FIRST PORTRAIT AS POPE JOHN XXIII
While Patriarch of Venice, one of Pope John’s first
projects was to renovate the rooms occupied by Pope St.
Pius X when he was Patriarch of Venice. The first visitor
to the restored rooms was Francis Cardinal Spellman,
Archbishop of New York, shown walking with the future
Pontiff.

NEW POPE - FIRST AUDIENCE
The Vatican issued this
commemorative medal to
mark the coronation of His
Holiness Pope John XXIII
on November 4, 1958. De
signed by Aurelio Mistruz-
zi, it carries a side portrait
of the Holy Father and a
relief of the papal tiara,
above which there is a
dove representing the
Holy Spirit and the rays
of the divine sun.
Immediately following his election as successor to Pope
Pius XII, the new Pontiff, His Holiness Pope John XXIII
extends a welcoming hand as he receives his well-wishers
in the Sistine Chapel. He is shown wearing a white skull
cap, red cape, and gold embroidered pallium.
