FIRST AMERICAN BEAT A New Parish Named For Mother Seton NEW YORK (RNS)--A new parish in Shrub Oak, N. Y., will be the first in the world named in honor of Blessed Eli zabeth Ann Seton, foundress of the American Sisters of Charity it was announced by Francis Cardinal Spellman, Archbishop of New York. Elizabeth Ann Seton, a native New Yorker, was beatified in the Vatican last March 17 by the late Pope John XXIII. The early 19th century nun was the first native born American to be so honored. THE new parish will be lo cated on a 14-acre tract of land in suburban Westchester County at Shrub Oak. According to Church regu lations, a parish must be named in honor of a saint or of one of the Mysteries in the life of Jesus Chris tor the Virgin Mary. However, the Vatican has granted permission for two parish churches to be named in honor of Blessed Elizabeth Ann Seton, one in the New York archdiocese and the other in the Baltimore archdiocese, the two regions where she lived and labored. I ANSWER TO LAST WEEK’S PUZZLE IN addtion, a shrine chapel in honor of Mother Seton will be built in Our Lady of the Rosary parish in down town Manhattan, a site where she lived. The pastor of the new' parish in Shrub Oak is Msgr. Arthur F. Nugent, a member of the faculty and chairman of the his tory department at Cardinal Hayes High School in Bronx, N. Y. BILL SIGNED Catholic Women Aided Equal Pay qq □aaa naanaaan □aaaa aasaa nnn aaoa qqaaa aaa WASHINGTON (NC)—'When President Kennedy signed the equal pay bill into law a few days ago, the National Council of Catholic Women had a not able part in the victory. The new legislation requires that women who are covered by the minimum wage law shall be paid the same wages as men for performing the same jobs. Its provisions do not cover all working women, just the 27, 500,000 estimated to be covered by the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 as amended. The President said it is only a “first step,” but added that it made clear “our determination that when women enter the labor force, they will find equality in their pay envelopes." THE NCCW, and other natio nal organizations, have worked for legislation of this sort for many years. This fact was re cognized when President Kennedy invited the NCCW to be among the groups represent ed at the signing ceremony. He used a number of pens in affixing his signature, and gave one to each of the representat ives of women's groups present at the White House. Margaret Mealev, NCCW executive dire ctor, received a pen as repre sentative of Mrs. Joseph Mc Carthy of San Francisco, NCCW president. This new law is not to be confused with the so-called Equal Rights amendment to the Constitution, which is still be ing urged and which the NCCW has earnestly opposed for de cades. The proposed Equal Rights amendment, which a number of senators and representatives have introduced in the present session of Congress, as they have in many former Con gresses, provides that: “Equa lity of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex." ON ITS face, this seems to be reasonable legislation, and cal culated to win a good deal of popular support. But the NCCW, and other organizations, have consistently warned that it would prove to be a delusion. The NCCW has told Congres sional committees from time to time the proposed constitutional amendment under the guise of giving equality, would wipe out legal safeguards protecting woman's position in the home and in society, many of which she won only after long and per severing effort. Such “blanket” legislation represents “a false solution of the problems of dis crimination because of its false assumption that manandwoman Final Advice Met VATICAN CITY (NC)—Faith ful to the final advice of Pope John, his private secretary, Msg^. Loris Capovllla, has flow* to Venice for a visit with his mother. are identical and hence should have identical treatment,” the council holds, THE NCCW says it gives “frank recognition” to the fact that “although men and women' are equal in their personal dig nity they are nevertheless dif ferent,” and it believes respect should be had for “the chara cteristics which nature has given each.” The council has pointed out the “equal” does not mean “identical,” and has backed government study of discrimin ation against women, asking that existing discrimination be re moved “unless justified by dif ferences in physical structure, biological or social function.” While wiping out a large num ber of legislative gains tedi ously won by women, the NCCW further contends, the so-called Equal Rights amendment would substitute nothing of value in their stead. of elderly person weekends.
