Room For More Says Expert SAN FRANCISCO, (NC)—Fears of overpopulation in the United States have no basis in fact according to Karl Brandt, di rector of the Stanford Univer sity Food Research Institute. A former member of Pre sident Eisenhower’s Council of Economic Advisers, Brandt in sists that even with 180 million people in the U. S. today it is seriously underpopulated. Even with double the popu lation it would not be over- populated and would, in fact, have a much higher level of living, he said. for the best in*,. impest** ^control* Service The all-new, all-transistorized flore/co' Dictating/Transcribing Machine featuring lifetime magnetic tape with automatic loading ...only $249.50* HYN85 COMPANY 172 WHITIHALL STRUT. THE OLDEST FART OF THE BUILDING DATES TO IZfO POPE REFUSES Boston’s Cardinal Asks Mission Post BOSTON (RNS) — Richard Cardinal Cushing, Archbishop of Boston, returning here after 23 days in Rome, said that Pope Paul VI is unwilling to allow him to become a fulltime mission ary in Latin America. Cardinal Cushing was inter viewed at Logan International Airport where some 500 per sons greeted him on his re turn. "THE Holy Father would not give me permission to go to the Latin American missions per manently,” the prelate said, "but it is possible that 1 will have to go there on missionary tasks in the near future.” Cardinal Cushing founded the Missionary Society of St. James the Apostle for Latin America in 1958. He has made two tours of the society’s mission sta tions in Bolivia and Peru. In 1962, the prelate reveal ed that he was willing to re linquish his post as Archbis hop of Boston and become a SETHERLAMTS FIRST fulltime missionary if it would advance the cause of the Latin American missions. It was re ported then that the Vatican had twice refused his offere. CARDINAL Cushing hailed the recent meeting of Presi dent John F. Kennedy and Pope Paul as "a great tribute of esteem by the Pope for the President and people of the United States.” While in Rome, Cardinal Cushing had two private audien ces with Pope Paul. He describ ed the new pontiff as a "com bination of the intelect of Pope Pius XII and the personality of Pope John XXIIL” He said he never doubted that the Cardinal Archbishop of Mi lan would be elected by the con clave. "Being a practical politician, I knew that Cardinal Montini would be the eventual pope,” Cardinal Cushing said. "The only question was how many bal lots it would take.” Married Minister Ordained Priest tees rejected an application from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., noted Negro Baptist lea der to enroll his five-year-old son. More recently the school voted not to consider the appli cations of two Negro children from Episcopal families. THESE actions, Bishop Clai borne said in his announcement, "have removed the school from the orbit of the discipline of the Episcopal Church.” "Therefore,” he said, "the trustees have forfeited the right of implied or official support for the Lovett School by the Epi scopal Church.” Bishop Clairborne noted that last April Lovett trustees had acknowledged their ” allegiance to the principles of the Epis copal Church, including the principle that segregation on the sole basis of race is inconsis tent with the Christian re ligion.” GRONINGEN, Netherlands, (NC)—A former Presbyrerian minister who is married and the father of three children will be ordained a Catholic priest by Bishop Petrus A. Niermanof Groningen. A spokesman for the Bishop said that Pope John XXIII short ly before his death authorized the ordination of Jacobus Loos, 55-year-old resident of Zwolle, in the Groningen diocese. He will be the first married man to be ordained a Latin Rite priest in the Netherlands. LOOS became a minister in the Dutch Reformed Church in 1933 and was engaged in pasto ral work successively at Ou- dega, Arnhem, Workum and Hil— versum. He resigned as vicar in Hilversum in 1955 to be re ceived into the Catholic Church. Mrs. Loos became a Catholic the same year. While stationed at Hilversum from 1946 to 1955, Loos became president of the "Hilversum Convent," a society of Protes tant ministers who sought to restore some Catholic values to the Dutch Reformed Church. He is the author of a book entitled "Re formation and Catholicism." ANOTHER member of the Hilversum ministers’ group, Jan K. Vandebrink, also be came a Roman Catholic. On joining the Catholic Church, Loos attended the theo logical school of the Catholic University of Nijmegen. He was awarded his doctorate in theo logy In 1961, and has been a lecturer at Dutch Catholic seminaries since then. Mr. and Mrs. Loos are the parents of a daughter who is married and two sons, one a law student at the University of Groningen and the other an ag ronomy major at the Agricultu ral University of Wageningen. Bishop Nierman’s spokesman said (July 4) that the time and place for Loos’ ordination had not yet been set. He said also that the Bishop had not deter mined what assignment he would give Loos as a priest. WHILE Loos’ ordination will be the first of its kind in the Netherlands, it is not unprece dented. Since World War II, about a half dozen former Lu theran ministers have been or dained in Germany and remain ed married. One of the first or dained was Father Rudolf Goe the, a collateral descendent of the poet, who became a priest in 1951. A former Lutheran minister in Denmark, Father Olav Roerdam Bonnevie, was ordained a Catholic priest in Copenhagen in 1960, and his wife had a place of honor at the ordination.
