I I CINCINNATI SCHOOLS Financial Difficulties May Close Some Classes CINCINNATI, (NC)—Schools of the Cincinnati archdiocese face a financial crisis that may make it necessary to drop the first four grades, Bishop Paul Leibold has declared. add $16 million in operating expense to the area’s taxpayers. “If anyone has a better ans wer in view of the actual facts as they exist today, we would like to hear it,” he said. Bishop Leibold, chairman of the Archdiocesan School Board, said the crisis also may mean non construction of new schools or additions “until the teachers are actually named and adequa tely compensated.” HE estimated that if the arch diocese called a halt to school construction it would require the state-operated school sys tem to undertake a $25 million building program in the area of the archdiocese and would Bishop Leibold went on to point out that “state aid would help and would save the tax payers a great deal of money.” He added that "it is our con viction that a legal solution can be found for any constitutional problems that may exist,” FORTY years ago, he said, the principle was, “Every Cat holic child in a Catholic school. He explained that the lower grades were indicatedfor the possible cutback because “it is easier to get young children to come to religious vacation schools and an effective pro- NORELCO DICTATING MACHINES BLU RAY WHITKPRINT MACHINES PHOTORAPID COPIERS • HEYER DUPLICATORS MASTER ADDRESSERS • AMPTO PHOTOCOPY OLIVETTI ADDERS - REX-ROTARY MIMEO ■»-nr— fomflcuuf 172 WHITEHALL STREET, S. The Bishop noted that the Cat holic schools “are fully acre- dited by the state and comply with every requirement estab lished by the State Board of Education.” The Bishop expressed the opinion that “shared time may be a little help in specific cases, but it is no solution.” He also noted that “pastors tell us a big help right now would be free bus transportation, provided as a welfare service, and parents say a lift on the book bill would help them.” Shotgun Blasts Damage Rectory BURAS, La. BOWL OF RICE A DAY ‘Half Our Children Reach Age Of Six’ MONTREAL, Ont. (RNS) — A Roman Catholic prelate from teeming South India is lectur ing throughout Montreal In an attempt to interest the citizens in the great needs of his coun try. his arrival from New York. BISHOP David, as he is known, said many of his count rymen toil long hours and have no day of rest. “Disease is wid espread and the result is that only half our children live to reach the age of six.” The bishop, a Sales lan of St. John Bosco, is a member of an Indian family which has been Roman Catholic for more than 200 years. US SENATOR Bishop S. David Marianaya- gm of Vellore, in appealing for assistance to his countrymen, said many are living in huts and have only one meal a day. “A bowl of rice is all they have, he said in an interview upon Catholic Pap er’s AMA Stalid Lauded He said there are now 6, 500,000 Roman Catholics in In dia, but noted that through the caste system has officially been abolished, it is still an obsta cle to the growth of the Church in his country. ANSWER TO LAST WEEK’S PUZZLE i nun nnrira nra ana ana naa rin oaann man WASHINGTON, (NC)~ Sen. Harrison A. Williams, Jr., of New Jersey has lauded the st and taken by a priest and a Catholic newspaper against re marks made by the president of the American Medical Asso ciation. ranrcunnnn nnn am □nnnna □ anna n a □a annnn an □ □ a ana odd qd AMA president Edward Annis stated recently that an editor ial in the Catholic Star Herald, newspaper of the Camden dio cese, in regard to the medicare program of health care through social security was "typical of the distortion of the Catholic press.” HE also said that the writ ing of Msgr. George G. Higgins, director of the Social Action De partment, National Catholic Welfare Conference, reflects the thinking of labor leaders and their efforts to dominate American medicine. “The reason is that most of the converts are 'untouchables* — members of the lowest group on the Indian caste ladder. And members of the other castes have therefore come to asso ciate Christianty with the poverty which these 'untoucha bles’ have inherited from their forebears. This makes it all the more important to raise the standards of living in my coun try,” he said. In reference to the charge by Dr. Annis, who is a Catholic, Msgr. Higgins had stated: “Some statements you just smile at when people have made up their minds.” Bishop Marianayagam is ac companied on his eastern Cana dian tour by Father Francis Schlooz of Holland, who has worked in India for 28 years.
