THURSDAY, JULY 25, 196v< GEORGIA BULLETIN PAGE 7 IN BASEBALL Catholic Profiles BY RONDEL Towering Frank Howard, the Dodger’s 6*7,2451b. mass of muscle may be the first National Leaguer to crack the magic 60 homer mark. The key to Howard’s success lies in two things: his own pati ence and persistence, and how often he plays. At present the lumbering outfielder-first baseman is being * platooned, and playing only against southpaw flingers. In order to develop his timing to its maximum degree Frank has got to play everyday. He served notice of his emergence upon the scene as a power- hitter deluxe last season when he swatted 31 homers and drove in 117 tallies while playing only three-fourths of the campaign. The National League’s rookie of the year in *60, this power ful righthanded hitting prodigy is destined for great heights. While chatting on the Dodger bench, Frank expressed hope that he could go through a full season without any major injuries. The kind that would keep him out of the line up for any period of time. ’’The big difference between me now and when I came up is a more profound knowledge of the strike zone. I was fooled, too often and too easily in my first two years. I came up swinging for the fences, and by overswinging 1 struck out too often." “Cutting down on my strikeouts is my goal this year," said the personable 26 year old giant. Though many of the Dodgers are intent on avoiding any talk about last years "el foldo,'* which ended when the Giants added the coup de grace in the playoffs, Frank is willing to talk about it. FRANK HOWARD "Many people Just say we folded and let it go at that, "he explained. "But it isn’t that easy. There were many factors, of course while Sandy’s (Koufax) injury was the key one and die one which is direcdy the cause, there were many other injur ies. The club that finished the season for die Dodgers was not a sound one physically." * "Wills was playing with bad legs, Gilliam and Roseboro were overworked and the bullpen boys had been called on too often. In addition, Podres had a bad back. He has a chronic back ail ment, and it hit him towards the end of the race, and we just weren’t hitting. That kid (Larry Burright) that we had on second base, was just a rookie and had never played under the pressures that he was exposed to. He cracked and so did our pennant hopes." That’s the way Howard describes the Los Angeles nine’s failure to win die NL flag. It is not an alibi, for as Frank him self is quick to add; "Don’t get me wrong. You can’t take any thing away from the Giants. They were tough in the clutch and fought for everything they got." Howard has hit many drives better than 500 feet in his relati vely short career. He has what many baseball buffs call power to burn. There is no park anywhere that Frank cannot hit a ball out of. Mickey Mantle may have put the tape measure in baseball but Frank Howard is going to keep it there. A graduate of Ohio State, Frank is also a fine basketball player in the off season. During die Baseball months Frank is * all baseball, on and off the field. A real student of the game, Frank works hard at correcting his mistakes and improving him self. He drives himself mercilessly in an effort to become the ball player he visualizes that he should and could be. He is hard on himself and quick to blame himself. Its almost as if he feels he should never make an out or make an error. Frank has more raw power than any man who has ever played the game. If and when he harnesses it, and puts it to use, he will become the most feared power slugger of all time. * Leroy s Auto Service TXine Up - Front End Alignment Automatic Transmission 4011 P’tree Rd. The statement was made here by Father Godfrey Diekmann, O.S.B., one of five official Ca tholic observers to the meet ing appointed by the Vatican’s Secretariat for Promoting Christian Unity. "THERE is a growing con viction among Catholics and Protestants that the point of misunderstanding now and of ultimate union on the future lies in ecclesiology—the nature of the Church," declared Father Diekmann of St. John’s Abbey, Collegeville, Minn. And, he noted, the July 12 to 26 meeting of the Faith and Order Commission of the World Council of Churches, being held in Montreal, will continue dis cussions on the nature of the church begun at its most re cent meeting in Lund, Sweden, in 1952. Father Diekmann is editor of Worship magazine, a litur gical journal, and was a mem ber of the preparatory com mission on the liturgy for the Second Vatican Council. He was recently named an expert for the council's second session which begins in September. INTERVIEWED as he com pleted teaching a liturgy course at the University of San Fran cisco, Father Diekmann said it is "becoming clear that the word ’ecclesia* (church) as used in the New Testament has a Eucharistic dimension— the coming together of the people for the breaking of bread, for the Lord’s Supper, to give wor ship together." He said there is a growing realization among Protestants that the church does not exist merely to preach the word of God hit to celebrate the sign of the Lord’s Supper. "This perhaps is the most important catalyst for sacra mental devotion in Protestant churches," he said. At the same time that Pro testants are showing renewed sacramental interest, Father Diekmann said, in the Catholic Church there is a "return to the Scriptures insofar as they are the lifegiving Word of God."
