i f I THURSDAY, AUGUST 8, 1963 GEORGIA BULLETIN PAGE 7 IN BASEBALL Catholic Profiles BY RONDEL KARL BARTH Living up to advance publicity and super-star billing is often the hardest part of being a major-league bonus baby. The few that are able to overcome the pressure often go on to actually become super-stars. One such player is youthful Carl Yastraz- emski of the Boston Red Sox. When Yastrzemski first arrived on the big league scene in 1961, he was billed as a super-star. Many went so far as to claim him a worthy successor to the departing Ted Williams. Tales of Yastrzemski’s hitting and fielding feats were available in detail for gullible fans to divulge and eval uate. Carl, who was born in the year that Williams was breaking in with the Red Sox was a very unlikely looking successor to the immortal Williams. Signed for a $100,000 bonus, Yaz stands only 5’11 and tips the scales at a meager 172, in contrast to Ted's hulking 6*4, 2001b. frame. Also, Yaz is nowhere near Williams in the power class. Where Williams was noted for his homers, Yaz is noted for his singles, doubles and tremendous speed. Where Ted hated to take the field, Yaz enjoys playing defense as much as he does hitting. His fielding is far better than Williams’ ever was and his arm is among the strongest in the loop. During his first season in the American league young Carl lived under constant pressure. He was being cast in the shadow of the now retired ff9. He was forced to produce. The result was that a mid-season Yastrzemski was hitting only .210. An anemic figure in any league, and especially so if you stop to consider that this was the highest priced rookie in Fenway park history, and the man picked to succeed Williams, no less. Red Sox skipper Mike Higgins made perhaps the most valu able contribution to Carl during the 1961 campaign when he re assured the southpaw swinger of his ability by keeping him in the third spot in the batting order. “You’re my leftfielder,” Higgins told him. "Don’t worry about your hitting. It’ll come around." And come around it did. During the last two months of the *61 campaign Carl hit at a .385 clip to bring his freshman mark up to an unspectacular, yet creditable .266. A star at Notre Dame University, Carl gives the impression of being an easy going, happy-go-lucky guy. But to people who know him, as his roomate Chuck Schilling, Carl is a worrier. He worries about slumps, living up to his billing, his family, and practically everything under the sun. No one knows Carl like his roomie Schilling. They have played and roomed together since Carl was at Minneapolus in 1960. These two, are, in the truest sense of the word, inseperable. At the end of an inning in thefield. Schilling lags a little in order that he and Yaz might jog to the dugout together. On the way out Chuck often runs a little past his position so that they might ex change a few more words. Carl Yastrzemski is one of the main reasons for the Boston Red Sox being in the first division. He is, at present, the best left- fielder in the American league. The only other who can approach him is Tom Tresh of the Yankee's. A fierce determination and will to win burns inside Carl Yastrzemski. He is a team man. He plays to win and hates to lose. To Carl, winning isn’t everything, its the only thing. An aggressive ballplayer, Yastrzemski is also an extremely exciting player. He charges ground balls much the way Willie Mays does, and scoops them up and throws much the way Mel Ott or Tris Speaker did. He plays left field with the belief that anything hit that way that does not go out of the park, he should catch. Last season 15 runners were victimized by his strong, ac curate arm. Before the end of May this season Carl had nine- assists. During the early months of the current season Yaz was pacing thf junior circuit in batting average, and was among the leaders in rbi’s. In *62 Carl knocked in 94 runs and socked 19 homers while batting .296. A notorious slow starter this mightfinally be the season he begans to live up to that super-star billing. He has been hover ing around the .325 mark so far. With a little more luck and very few slumps he hopes to hoist it to around .340. Carl resents 1 being compared to Williams, but if he finishes near the .340 mark people are going to talk, and you know what they’re going to be saying. “Shades of Ted Williams." Where Insurance is a Profession, Not a Sideline SUTTER & McLELLAN JA 5-2086 Council Challenges Protestant Renewal GENEVA (RNS)—While the Second Vatican Council has pre sented an opportunity for new, meaningful Catholic- Protes tant conversations, it has had the even more important effect of emphasizing need for self- renewal among non-Roman Ca tholic Churches, according to the noted Swiss theologian, Dr. Karl Barth. Writing in the current is sue of The Ecumenical Review, a quarterly published here by the World Council of Churches, Dr. Barth stressed the “land slide. . .‘spiritual’ movement” within Catholicism and its meaning to non-Catholic Chur ches. HE NOTED the “very re markable beginning” of con tacts between religion that have been made and agreed that “the question about the continuation of such contacts is sensible and definitely worthwhile.” At the same time, he said, questions exist “whether it is not more important and im perative for us of 'another faith’ to direct our attention. ..(to the Catholic movement to ward inner renewal)...instead of being so formally concern ed with future contacts." "The way to unity’ of the church can only be the way of her renewal,” Dr. Barth wrote. “But renewal means repen tance. And repentance means turning about: not the turning of those others, but one’s own turning. “IS NOT the problem posed for the World Council of Chur ches by the Roman Council one of repentance and so of renewal of our Churches, of all the non- Roman Churches assembled in the World Council? “And is not the continuation of our conversations with the others a secondary problem do- minated by the primary one? This is the question...which seems to me to be the burning question with respect to the conclusion of the Council, and, in fact, far beyond this.” Dr. Barth noted steps toward Catholic renewal through Vati can Council discussions on “Scripture and Tradition,” in “more industrious...preaching in Roman congregations,” in the movements for congrega tional participation in the Mass and for liturgical reform, “ex tending even to the architec ture of the churches.” THE present situation, he said, poses questions for non- Cathollcs. These are not “whe ther we could, should or would wish to become 'Catholic', but we are asked whether, in view of the spiritual motion that is taking place there, something has been set in motion—or not set in motion — on ‘our’ side in the rooms of ‘our’ Church.” He critically cited “all too many offensive movements that have made no progress" among non-Catholic Churches, incom patibility among denominations theologically and politically, and pointedly questioned many instances of dissension, includ ing a query to “American Christianity" which “seems in wardly incapable of measuring up t# the problem of integra tion...” IN THIS situation, Dr. Barth asked, “on what topic and in what language do we propose to continue those discussions which have been hoped for with Roman Catholics? Raymond J. Gallagher (above), secretary of the U. S. National Conference of Catholic Charities will be among the speakers at the world congress of the Cath olic International Union for Social Service.
