Koufax’s Season
BY RONDEL
Los Angeles’ fantabulous southpaw chucker Sandy Koufax is well
on his way to the greatest season ever enjoyed by a left-hander
in the history of the game.
Having already thrown ten shutouts this season Sandy is well
within reach of the all-time major league mark of 16 held by
Grover Cleveland Alexander.
Last year’s bizarre National League race which saw the San
Francisco Giants fortunately stumble to
the pennant will not be repeated again
this year.
The Bay City nine are not the stron
gest club in the NL. Nor are the Dod
gers, even though they are leading the
loop. The Giants lack the Infield depth
that the other contenders possess and
are at a complete loss for an adequate
bullpen.
The Dodgers biggest problem is the absence of a consistent long
ball hitter. Though it has not been evident thus far, it will once
again take its toll in the clutch. LA possesses the best pitching
staff in the first division and also the finest bullpen; but they cannot
continue to win with the speed and punch and judy hitters that adorn
their starting lineup.
Cincinnatti, my pre-season pick to click is still wallowing
deep in the first division due to the failure of their big gun, Frank
Robinson to produce in the clutch, coupled with the inability of
their front line righthanded veterans to come around.
Joey Jay and Bob Purkey have been the Reds biggest disap
pointments of the year, but Close-Up looks for these two vete
rans to produce when the chips are down in the stretch run and
enable the Reds to edge out the Dodgers and Giants.

Last week's college all star football game versus the Green
Bay Packers has set the experts to talking of the vulnerability
of the world champions.
With no just cause said Packer boss Vince Lombardi in a post
game interview. "We had many injuries and were just not up to
snuff for the tilt. We’re not happy about having lost, but neither
are we going to adopt a state of mourning. We’ll be just as tough
as anybody else in the league come opening day.
We’re inclined to agree with the Packer coach, though we
wouldn’t be surprised if the Wisconsin eleven secures another
quarterback to back up frontliner Bart Starr who suffered through
a disappointing game in the college - pro hassle.

Hear Talk
On Mass
The Holy Sacrifice of the
Mass was the subject of a talk
given recently by Dr. Edwin J.
Scheibner to the Young People’s
Group of the Mt. Vernon Pres
byterian Church.
The meeting was held recent
ly at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
R. P. Dobbs, 5620 Long Island
Drive, N. W. The talk was il
lustrated with color slides on
the Sacred vessels and vest
ments as well as those taken
during an actual Mass. A lively
question period followed the
formal presentation.
At a housing - project in New Orleans, seminarians spend their summer vacation aiding
the children to find healthful recreation. Once a week the youngsters are taken on an
outing away from the crowded project. Some of them rarely ever leave the community
within a city. In this picture seminarian Michael Aymami supervises a ball game for
young residents of a project.
"Dr. Scheibner is a member
of St. Jude’s Church in Sandy
Springs, Father John D. Staple-
ton, pastor. St. Jude’s Men’s
Club last spring held an open
house for Catholics and Non-
Catholics in the area. This "Op
eration Understanding’’ and the
ecumenical movement resulting
from the Vatican Council were
responsible for the increased
interest in our faith shown by the
Presbyterian group.
Pope John
Cited By
UN Official
ROME (NC)--The director-
general of the United Nations
Food and Agriculture' Organi
zation (FAO) said that the late
Pope John XXIII pointed out the
"immediate duty of society” is
facing the world’s problem of
hunger and malnutrition.
Starr was continually overthrowing his receivers and often
off target or too slow to get the pass where he wanted it. Maybe
it was just the weather (100 degrees), but whatever it was, the
Packers knew he just wasn't his old self. They’ll take steps to
insure themselves. You can bet on that.
Director General Binay R.
Sen, in a press conference
here appealed to heads of gover
nments represented at the Mos
cow test ban talks to set up a
world disarmament fund which
would help in the campaign
against hunger and want. The
FAO is sponsoring a five-year
(1960-65) Freedom From
Hunger Campaign.
Back to baseball and the same old story in the American Lea
gue pennant chase. The Yanks are once again making a runaway
of the race thanks to their outstanding bench strength.
PEACE depends on "true se
curity,” Sen said, which cannot
be attained "as long as more
than half of manking is not freed
from the curse of hunger, mal
nutrition and poverty.”
Inside the Yankee dugout, one of the most undiscussed, yet con
versational topics is reserve catcher-outfielder John Blanchard.
Big John is a power hitter deluxe and undoubtedly the Bombers
most valuable reserve yet he plays little or none at all, even with
the injuries to Mantle and Maris. Why? Because of a personal
feud with skipper Ralph Houk. John has spoken out often about not
seeing enough action but word has it that Houk has refused to play
John in spite of it all.
Sen appealed for the "est
ablishment of a world disarma
ment fund;
"(a) To come into operation
immediately,
Having already issued a play me or trade me ultimatum John
can expect little if any better treatment, though he is getting to
play more often. Houk cannot afford to trade him to any other AL
club because of his power, but watch for an off-season deal in
volving JB and a NL pitcher. Meanwhile big Jawn will let his bat
do his talking.
"(b) To be financed by con
tributions from all members
of the United Nations and the
specialized agencies, linked to
the savings emerging from re
ductions of military expendi
tures and starting with the re
latively modest amounts result
ing from the suspension of
nuclear tests, and
"( c ) TO be devoted to the
world-wide achevement of free
dom from hunger and want in
our time.”
Morroco King
Names Marie
PARIS (NC)~King Hassan II
of Morocco named his daughter
Marie because the name is
cherished by both Christians
and Muslims, it was reported
here.
L’Homme Nouveau, Catholic

Hassan himself as saying of the
child born to his Queen a year
ago:
