Girl Scouts Set
‘New Look’ Plan
Like their sisters all across
the Country, the Girl Scouts
of the Archdiocese of Atlanta
resume their troop activities
this week with a new design in
Girl Scout program.
The general age range for
Girl Scouts remains the same
as always (7 through 17 years),
the groupings within this range
have been reorganized. Brownie
Girl Scouts are 7 and 8 year
olds (grades 2,3); Junior Girl
Scouts are 9, 10 and 11 (grades
4, 5, 6); Cadett Girl Scouts
are 12, 13 and 14 (grades 7,
8,9); Senior Girl Scouts are
15, 16 and 17 (grades 10, 11,
12).
EACH OF the new age group
ings represents one stage of a
girl's development. Brownie
Scout activities appeal to the
imagination, curiosity and
need-to-be-needed of die seven
and eight year-olds. Junior Sco
uts want to make and do more
things on their own, to explore
and experiment. As young
adolescents, Cadette Scouts are
becoming more aware of them
selves as individuals; they be
gin to examine values, to seek
their own identity through wider
social relationships and ex
panded interests. Senior Scouts,
on the ffHwiahut d of woman
hood, are ready to assume res-
ponsiblility as citizens of the
community, while thinking ser
ious thoughts about the future-
higher education, career, mar
riage.
The new look in Girl Scout
ing represents a recognition of
the changing needs of young peo
ple in a changing world. It aims
to bring a richer and more me
aningful Scouting experience to
a larger number of girls while
it keeps intact the fundamental
principles on which the move
ment was founded more than
THROUGHOUT its history,
the spiritual force behind Girl
Scouting has given life and
meaning to its program. The
Girl Scout organization affirms
that belief in God and acknow
ledgment of one’s responsibil
ity to God are basic to the
development of good character
and sound citizenship.
As a good citizen of her com
munity, a Girl Scout is encour
aged to become an interested
and active member of her own
religious group. As a Scout she
is required to subscribe to the
code of ethics shared by Girl
Scouts all over the world —
The Girl Scout Promise and
Laws.
