» PAGE 6 GEORGIA BULLETIN THURSDAY, OCTOBER 10, 1963 MADAME NHL A ‘First Lady’ Of Controversy SAIGON, Vietnam (NC) — Madame Ngo dinh Nhu, “First Lady" of Vietnam, now visit ing the U. S., is a convert to the Catholic Church. Her father, until recently Vietnam- ••e ambassador to the U, S., is a Confucian and her mother a Buddhist. Madame Nhu's maiden name was Tran Le Xuan, Tran being the family name and Le Xuan, which means "Beautiful Spring time," her proper name. When she was baptized at the age of 19, before her marriage to Ngo dinh Nhu, she received the Christian name of Lucy. She is the second of three children. Her sister, older, and her bro ther, a year younger, nave not become Christians. HER HUSBAND is political counsellor to his brother, Pre sident Ngo dinh Diem, TheNhus live in a section of the Gla Long presidential palace with their four children, two girls and two boys. Since the President is un married, Madame Ngo dinh Nhu, his sister-in-law, acts as his hostess and is called the "First Lady," She and her husband are re garded as the two most power ful persons in President Diem’s government, though neither of La u s Look For Oscar them holds any constitutional position in the executive branch. They are both members of the National Assembly, to which they have just been reelected unopposed. She is the found ress and president of the Wo men’s Solidarity Movement, a political-social organization. MADAME NHU has aroused severe criticism by some of her public utterances. Catholics have regretted the harshness of her statements during the re cent long-drawn-out dispute be tween the government and a large section of the Buddhists. Many of those who know her well respect her sincerity and courage, while deploring her intemperate and tactless pro nouncements. They point out that she did not receive a Cat holic education. "She is a sincere believer," one of her Catholic acquaint ances said with emphasis, "but she has not had the benefit of a really Catholic formation." HER SCHOOLING began in Saigon. The family moved to Hanoi, where she attended the coeducational secondary sc hool, the Lycee Albert Sarraut. This was one of the schools conducted by the French government then holding power in Vietnam. About nine years ago, because of the disturbed conditions in Vietnam, Madame Nhu spent some months in Hong Kong, where she lived in a convent. That was when she began to study English under the guid ance of the Canossian Sisters. SHE IS faithful to her religi ous observances and desires to be a good Catholic, accord ing to a friend, bhe has made sure that her children are well instructed in their religion. Tne Ngo family into which she married has been Catholic for some 300 years. Norma Foster And Richard POPE PAUL &41’S Catholic Press Has Two Basic Functions VATICAN CITY (NC)—The Catholic press has two func tions, to Inform readers and guide their Judgment of the news, His Holiness Pope Paul VI said at a special audience for staff members of the Turin Catholic weekly, 11 Nostro Tem po. Pope Paul told the Catholic newsmen that it is not enough for Catholic newspapers to give die news and offer people a pic ture of events. While this should be done, he said, it is also nec essary to give die news a point of reference, to Judge it, to classify it, to see inside it and examine it beyond its super ficial aspect. CATHOLICS, the Pope said, have the capacity to make a superior Judgment and the Faith makes them see things in a moral and human light. There fore, he added, It is neces sary to accustom readers to true Christian judgment. The value of the Catholic press, he said, is in placing events in a Christian perspective. Pope Paul granted two other special audiences the same day (Sept. 24), one to the Dutch Ca tholic Union of Farmers and the other to the Agricultural Com mission of the European Parlia ment, He recalled his visit to the Netherlands to the farmers.
