Gainesville tallied midway in
the opening period. An Elephant
to his credit, stopped a Hornet
halfback on the Maroon and Wh

Coach Ray Sheppard’s men
filled the air with passes, com

quarter the Hornets penetrated
the St. Joe defense for a TD,
and the score was tied 6-6.
Then, in the waning moments,
quarterback Ortiz called on
Tommy Phillips, a Junior, who
kept the Hawks alive with his

The Marist co-captain took a

Gainesville cashed in six
more points in the third period

Pius X Drops Game To Baldwin

the fourth period.
Tom Medland returned the

NATURALLY SUPERNATURAL’
Pay Tribute To Pope John
BRUSSELS <NC)—Leo Car
dinal Suenens, Archbishop of
Malines-Brussels, said here
that the late Pope John XXIII
gave us the “unforgettable im
age of a man who was natur
ally supernatural and supernat-
urally natural."
The Cardinal was speaking to
2,000 persons gathered for the
opening of Brussels' lecture
series, Grandes Conferences
Catholiques, Also on the pro
gram were Bernard Cardinal
Aifrink, Archbishop of Utecht,
the Netherlands, and JeanGult-
ton, a professor at the Univ
ersity of Paris and the only
Catholic layman to attend gene
ral meetings of the ecumeni
cal council during its first ses
sion last year.
THE OPENING session was
dedicated to the late Pope.
Cardinal Suenens said that
Pope John, "unable to drama
tize any situation, would not
allow any situation to turn him
into a dramatic person,**
The Cardinal recounted an in
cident which followed the late
Pope’s election at the 1958
conclave:
WHEN POPE John left
the conclave, he found his se
cretary, Msgr. Loris Capo-
villa, in tears.
’tome on. Monsignor," he
said. "Who i* the new Pope,
you or me?"
"But what are we going to
do now," the secretary ask
ed.
"Say Vespers and Compl
ine," was the reply.
CARDINAL SUENENS pict
ured Pope John as the Pope of
the threefold dialogue: the dia
logue among Catholics of all
ranks and places, the dialo
gue between Catholics and ot
her Christians, and the dial
ogue between the Church and the
modern world.
Cardinal Aifrink said: "Pope
John, who won the esteem of the
whole world, not through any ex
traordinary intellectual talent,
but through the gifts of his he
art, through his simplicity and
humility will go down in his
tory not only as the Pope of
the Second Vatican Council, but
also as the Pope of the ecu
menical movement.
"HIS MOTU PROPRIO {papal
document) setting up the Secre
tariat for Promoting Christian
Unity will be known as the Ma
gna Carta of the ecumenical
movement in the Church."
Gultton described the late
Pope as a mild and generous
hlend of goodheartedness and
magnanimity.p
"I often wondered how Pope
John conquered the hearts of
so many people," he said,
"Perhaps it was because peo
ple saw him as a model they
could imitate."
