THE INDIVIDUAL MAN
Freedom Of Conscience
Vital Topic In Church
(The following article out
lines the views of one of the
Church's most outspoken com
mentators on contemporary
problems. He discusses the
need for the ecumenical coun
cil to consider the question of
individual freedom of con
science. The author, an Eng
lish missionary who served as
Archbishop of Bombay for 13
years, is in the forefront of
those who question whether a
just was is possible under mo

each one today is precisely
that. Does the state at war have
absolute authority to blind obe
dience? Does the subordinate
have no responsibility at all?
The right of conscientious ab
stention from participating in
war should be fully recognized.
However, nearly all of the “Ca
tholic countries” refuse this
right, a policy inconsistentwith
human dignity, Christian con
science and die UN Charter of
Human Rights.
F AR TOO LITTLE is known of
the witness of Franz Jagerstat-
ter. Unlike St. Thomas More in
learning, this Austrian peasant
nevertheless was the same kind
of husband, the same kind of
father, the same kind of witness.
He too stood out alone against
the advice of his own bishop, of
his priest-advisers, of the
claims of his family. Commit
ting his children ^ to God, he
refused all participation in Hit
ler's war as plainly unjust and
was beheaded in 1943.
This unlearned man refus
ed, giving reasons endorsed
since then most fully in the
Charter of Human Rights and by
the late Pope John XXIIL
THE RIGHTOF conscientious
abstention from taking part in
war supposes, of course, a test
applied to assure reasonable
means taken to inform indivi
dual conscience.
That is why the bishops who
joined with me during the first
session of die Vatican Council
II agreed that a conciliar en
dorsement of the rights of con
science is more desirable and
more practical than condemna
tion of any particular weapon of
war.
TO APPROACH the issue
other than through the question
of the right and duty of the indi
vidual is to face appalling com
plexity and meet the enormous
strength of the vested interests
involved.
The Church speaks with a
certain ambiguity on war. Yet,
it is uncompromising on another
issue not less vital and one also
ascertainable only by the indivi
dual conscience—the “popula
tion explosion.*'

THE CHURCH says to every
human being that contraception
is forbidden, not by her, but by
nature, not, therefore, to her
won children only, but to every
body.
Is it consistent, then, to in
sist on this obligation and at the
same time to say (as so many
theologians do): “The rights
and wrongs of peace and war'
are far too complicated for you.
You must let die goveramen'
decide."
SO THE INDIAN Christian
must hand in his blank check to
be filled in by his Minister of
Defense, but lodge a conscien
tious objection to his govern
ment's official policy encourag
ing contraception.
There must be a creation of a
Catholic public opinion in favor
of discussion of war and indi
vidual consciences.

FIRST GM.A. LOSS
Cadets Take G.M.A. In Landslide
The Marlst Cadets marched
Into Ponce de Leon Park Satur
day night, and left 13-0 victors
over eighth-ranked G. M. A. It
was an all— Marlst show, from
the pre-game battalion format
ion to die last offensive play.
The Marlst Cadets took the ini
tiative and never relinquished
it.
I
The first quarter saw fierce
defensive action. The dete
rmined Cadets refused to yeild
to the visitors from College
Park. The Marlst defense led
by John Banbury, David Govus,
and David McDuffie constantly
harrassed the G. M. A. back-
field.
EARLY IN THE second period
the Cadets, with excellent field
position took over the pigskin
on their own 47 yard line. El
even plays later Marlst was
on the scoreboard. Rhode Hill,
Michael Murphy, and Louis
Lombardy were instrumental in
keeping the march alive. Co
captain Hill scampered into the
end zone from the 24 yard line.
Withers* conversion made it 7-0
Seconds later Marlst defen
sive back Robert de Golian lat
ched onto a wayward G. M. A.
aerial and returned it to the
G. M. A. 26 yard line. With
only 53 seconds left in the
half Marlst quarterback Bill
Reitmeier for six points. The
extra point attempt was wide,
and Marlst led 13-0.

THE SECOND HALF conta

It was the middle of the fourth
period before G. M. A. could

time they began a march, the
Marist defense halted the drive
with pass interceptions or fum
ble recoveries.
The defeat was die first ble
