FAST ACTION WAS THE order of the evening as the St. Pius X Golden Lions clawed the previously
unbeaten St. Joseph's Hawks for a final score of 13-0. With all points in by the end of the first
half, the second half of the game turned into a long, tight, holding battle.
FIRST-HALF WIN
Golden Lions Trim St. Joes
BY JAMES DARDEN
St. Pius X matched a superb
defense with a fiery offense to
upend previously unbeaten St,
Josephs 13-0. The Golden Li
ons drove 60 yards to pay
dirt the first time they had the
ball.
Denny Wigbels scored the
touchdown on a four yard sweep.
The extra point attempt was
wide and the Gold and White
led 6-0.
ST. JOSEPH'S Hawks were
unable to move the ball during
THIRD STRAIGHT
the first half. They never got
past their own 30 yard line.
In the second quarter the Li
ons were moving goal-
ward again. A poor 15 yard
kick by the Hawks set them up
at the St. Joseph 40 yard line.
The Lions covered the 40 yards
in 10 plays for the score. Ed
Lacey bulled over from the four
yard line for the score. Paul
Faletti added the extra point for
a 13-0 score.
ALTHOUGH ALL the scoring
for the night was finished, the
excitement was far from over.
Marist Cadets Hit
Campbell Panthers
BY BOB BROCKMAN
The Marist Cadets outlasted
the Campbell - Smyrna Pan
thers, 21-7 Friday night in
Smyrna for their third victory
in as many weeks.
Early in the first quarter the
Cadets grabbed the pigskin and
began a sustained march. Be
hind the solid blocking of the
forward wall, Marist’s Rhode
Hill, Louis Lomvardy, Michael
Murphy, and Dennis Withers
made consistent gains in the 77
yard drive. Hill capped the
march with a one-yard run off
tackle for the touchdown.
Withers added the extra point
as the Cadets led 7-0.
THE HIGHLY effective Mar
ist defense contained the
Panther offense, John Crochet
and Robert De Golian were in
strumental in turning back the
Panthers; each intercepted a
Panther pass and made numer
ous tackles.
Just before the half the Pan
thers struck back. A long run
placed the ball inside the Cadet
five-yard line. With less than
a minute to go Campbell-
Smyrna scored and made the
score 7-7.
THE CADETS opened the
scoring in the third period on
a 25-yard pass from quarter
back Bill Reitmeier to end John
Banbury, who eluded and out-
raced the Campbell defenders
to score. Withers again con
verted to put the Cadets ahead,
14-7.
Author Stresses
White Race Role
MENLO PARK, Calif. —
Thomas Merton said here that
unless white Christians join
the Negro protest movement
it may lose its non-violent
Christian quality and become
a violent and chaotic fight
for power."
The Negro, he says does
not want to become a white
man, but wants to be re
cognized as a brother and to
have the white man join him
in washing away the sin of
past injustices and cruelties.
Merton, a renowned author
is Father Louis, a Trappist
monk of Gethsemani (Ky )
Abbey.
The Panthers threatened
again, but the fierce Cadet de
fense stiffened. Late in the
final period the Cadets faked
a field goal and Reitmeier
scampered into the end zone.
Withers toed the extra point and
the score was 21-7.
The victory evened the Cadet
slate at four wins and four de
feats.
CATHOLIC SCHOOLS
‘We Will Survive’
Says NCEA Aide
WEST HARTFORD, Conn —
(NC) — U. S. Catholic schools
face serious problems but they
will survive, "despite some
predictions to the contrary,"
a National Catholic Educational
Association official said here.
Father C. Albert Koob, O.
Praem., NCEA secondary
school department associate
secretary, cited "a new spirit
of determination. . . .among
Catholic educators which
is leading to definite improve
ment and higher standards."
“MOST OF OUR schools are
far better today than they were
five years ago," he told the an
nual Hartford archdiocesan tea
chers ’ institute.
Father Koob conceded, how
ever, that Catholic schools are
"moving more slowly in the dir
ection of improvement than
many critics would like."
HE ATTRIBUTED this to
three causes: "lack of adequate
funds to expand and improve;
shortage of qualified per
sonnel; and a traditional policy
of conservatism regarding cha
nge in methods and techniques,"
IF some cutback in Catholic
education should be necessary,
as for example by dropping
some elementary grades, "it
will be done reluctantly and with
the hope of catching up later
for time lost," he said.

At the outset of the second half,
the Hawks picked up a Lion
fumble at midfield. With the aid
of a pass interference penalty,
the Hawks drove to the St. Pius
nine yard line. A fumble stop
ped this threat. The Lions drove
to midfield and again fumbled to
the Hawks.
St. Joseph could not move the
ball and punted to the Lions 10
yard line. The Gold and White
drove to midfield as the final
period started, but a holding
penalty forced a punt.
ST. PIUS'S DEFENSE which
allowed St. Joseph only 106
yards total yardage for the
game, again stopped them cold.
St. Joseph with the aid of
a clipping penalty held the Lions
and forced them to punt.
Tom Medland who averaged
about 40 yards per kick in
three kicks lofted a 45 yard
beauty to the Hawks 15. The
Hawks never got out of their
own territory for the remainder
of the game.
THIS VICTORY gave St. Pius
a 6-1-1 season record. The
Lions sport a perfect 6-0-0
record at home.
Next week the Gold and White
travel to Covington to face New
ton County. The game will be
played Friday night.

CHICAGO (NC) — A Catholic
librarian and author described
here as **a marked departure"
Rome’s treatment of the works
of the controversial priest-sci
entist Father Pierre Teilhard
de Chardin, S. J. ,
j Father Redmond A. Burke,
C. S, V. , director of libra
ries at De Paul University, no
ted that while Roman authori
ties including the Holy Office
have issued warnings about Tei
lhard's writings, his books have
not been placed on the Index.
"THIS IS A marked departure
because of the fact that it simply
is a warning and (his work )
has not been icluded in the Index
of Forbidden Books," said Fat
her Burke, author of the book
"What Is the Index?"
The late Father Teilhard was
a French Jesuit paleontologist.
His writings on religious and
scientific themes, particularly
evolution, have received both
praise and criticism in Catho
lic and non-Catholic circles.
FATHER BURKE suggested
that the Church’s Index of For
bidden Books is due for revis
ion by the ecumenical council.
"Current educated Catholics
face complex situations, calling
not for propaganda, hysteria,
fear, frustration ordespair, but
for what might be described as
the pure flame of intelligence
applied to the contemporary sc-
ence," he said.
"THE CATHOLIC layman es
pecially must be prepared to
face, discuss and sometimes
decide issues involving. . .ra
cial segregation, divorce, birth
control and or international ten
sions.
"It is with these factors in
mind that Church legislation re
garding reading and books will
be considered by the council.
Book legislation suited for the
16th century is inappropriate
for the 20th," Father Burke
commented.
LETTER TO THE EDITOR
TO THE EDITOR:
Mr. James A. Doyle, execu
tive secretary of the Catholic
Press Association, has called
my attention, and sent a copy,
to the editorial on the Protes
tant Press which appeared in
your October 3 issue.
My thanks to you for the kind
remarks about our press. It is
this spiritofgoodwillandklndly
understanding which does so
much to abolish age-old misun
derstandings and ill-will.
The Associated Church Press
has had many and happy asso
ciations with the Catholic Press
Association, and over the years
we have had the opportunity to
exchange ideas, opinions, and
professional knowledge. The
ACP just this year passed the
20 million mark in circulation.
This is still a long ways from
the CPA mark. Perhaps some
day we may come a wee bit
closer.
