Soviet Union Continues
Christian Persecutions
NEW YORK (NC)~New evid
ence of communist persecution
of Christians in the Soviet Un
ion is contained in a letter
smuggled out of Russia and ad
dressed to the Orthodox Patri
archs of Jerusalem, Antioch
and Constantinople.
The letter, couched in simple
language, gives a portrait of
day-by-day harassment of
practicing Christians by the to
talitarian and officially athe
istic state.
IT TELLS OF the closing of
churches and monasteries;
of aged monks imprisoned or
turned into vagrants; of parents
arrested in their homes for re
aring their children as Christ
ians; of public mockery of holy
things; of trumped up charges
against devout religious, and of
collaboration by many Orthodox
clergymen with their church's
oppressors.

URGES ALTERTNESS
Georgians are called upon to
observe December asSAVE-A-
LIFE - FROM - CANCER -
MONTH in a proclamation is
sued this week by Governor Carl
E. Sanders.
In setting aside the month
long observation, Governor
Sanders urged emphasis on
alertness to the early signals of
possible cancer and the protec
tive value of annual health exa
minations to insure early de
tection and prompt treatment.
"IN NEARLY EVERY case
of cancer there is a time when
the disease can be caught and
treated successfully," Gover
nor Sanders said. "For some
this time may come this year,
or in the next 10 years and for
it mentioned—was addressed to
the Orthodox Patriarchs by
persons designating them
selves "Parishioners and pilg
rims of the Orthodox Churches
throughout Russia."
SMUGGLED OUT OF theSov-
ieth Union, the letter reached
its intended destination and
copies were sent to the New
York offices of the World Cou
ncil of Churches.
The letter, an appeal for as
sistance from non-Russian
patriarchs, documents its ch
arges with names and places,
but these were omitted in pub
licity releases to protect the
writers and the Christian com
munities they represent.
"Since 1959," the letter st
ates, "the Anticihrist in Rus
sia has been persecuting
the Orthodox Church dread
fully."
IT SAYS AT FIRST children
were forbidden to serve as aco
lytes to bishops everywhere in
Russia, in spite of protests by
some it may be right now."
Present to accept the pro
clamation for the volunteers of
the Georgia Division of the
American Cancer Society were
the Governor’s wife, who is this
year serving as honorary chair
man of the Fall-Winter educa
tion program; Mrs. R. W. Huff,
Rome, State Earlier Treatment
Education Chairman, and Dr.
William Suttles, Personnel Di
rector of Rich's, Inc. and Ful
ton County Earlier Treatment
Education Chairman.
THE PROCLAMATION point
ed out that cancer is a perso
nal t h r e a t to more than
1,000,000 Georgians now living
and that it will strike in two of
every three homes throughout
the state at some time.
parents. In 1960 govern
ment officials in parts of the
country banned the consecrat
ion of graves during Radovni-
tsa (a period after Easter) and
later lowered the prices of
ikons and candles and other re
ligious objects to cut off the
church's income.
In 1961, the letter says, lo
cal "authorities forbade Holy
Communion and church at
tendance by children from 3 to
18 years of age, giving as the
reason for this that the school
is responsible for the education
gone so far that the represen
tative stands next to the door
of the cathedral spying on the
children. If he finds any chil
dren in the church, he tells the
churchwarden and this servant
of Antichrists collars the chil
dren and knocks their heads ag
ainst the wall."
THE LETTER’S ACCOUNTS
of persecution of individual Ch
ristians and of the heroic re
sistance offered by these be
lievers read like sections
from a novel by Dostoevsky.
It tells of the widow S., once
a partisan fighter, who sacrif
iced her health in the fight ag
ainst Hitler and who, today, is
very ill. She herself, is very
devout, she attends the Ortho
dox Church, gives her children
a religious upbringing and
opens her home to Chirst-
ian pilgrims.
"FOR THIS," the letter de
clares, "S. and her children
have been cruelly persecuted.
First, the investigator M. came
to her house, took all the ikons
from the walls, collected all her
religious books, all the trans
cribed prayers, took her last
sheet from the bed and tied all
the sacred things in it, intending
to carry off everything, inclu
ding S. herself.
"But when the investigator
tried to take her to the prose
cuting attorney’s office, her
children began to scream and
pull her back. Hearing their cr
ies a neighbor interfered and
prevented this barbaric act. Af
ter all this mockery, people
came to the S. house in the mid
dle of the night, banged on her
door, ripped the hook off the
corridor door and began to br
eak down the door of the room.
"THE FRIGHTENED child
ren again began to scream and
they vanished like evil spirits.
After all these unsuccessful at
tempts to seize her, she was
followed in the streets, but her
children always accompanied
her and the plan to. seize her
secretly in the street was foil
ed."
The letter says every effort
is made to prevent the religi
ous education of children.
"TEACHERS AND PUPILS
alike," it says, "try to woo our
children from the Church,
to turn children against their
parents."
It charges that when parents
forbid children to join the
Young Pioneers or communist
youth group, teachers them
selves apply for memberships
for the youngsters, buy them
pioneer ties and force them to
wear them in class.
"What can be worse for our
children," the writers ask,
"than to be removed from the
source of eternal life, the Ch
urch, the partaking of the Body
and Blood of Christ?"
