PATHOS OF SPORT President Kennedy BY RONDEL “Cowards die many times before their deaths; The valiant never taste of death but once." - Shakespeare While the recent death of President John Fitzgerald Kennedy was, and is a severe loss to all who loved and admired him—and even to those who opposed him— we’ll contemplate here his loss to the sports world. The one-time scrub football player was one of the best friends the sports world ever had. He loved sports. He was an eager participant even though a severe back injury, which nearly cost his life when he was a U. S. senator, curtailed some of his athletic activities. And he was an avid reader of the sports pages. ONE OF PRESIDENT Kennedy’s favorite forms of recreation was touch football. Many of the episodes of the President and other members of his family were recorded in the daily media. This served to bring him closer to the public. His “realness” and hu manness were perhaps his most winning assets. The President’s fondness for touch football kindled new interest in this sport across the nation. Following his example, grownups who had been getting flabby and lazy by not taking an active inte rest in sports, began participating. ONE OF PRESIDENT Kennedy’s most lasting and far reaching contributions in the field of sports was his call for a national phy sical fitness program. He created a Council on Youth Fitness, and today, thousands of schools across the country conduct organized fitness programs for millions of youngsters. And you’ll recall, it was President Kennedy who fired the na tion’s imagination when he wondered aloud whether or not Ameri can servicemen were still capable of taking 50mile hikes. Before you knew it, millions of Americans began hiking. Youngsters, oldsters, students, businessmen and numerous housewives got out and proved they could still keep their youthful stamina for long distances. EVEN PIERRE SALINGER, the President’s press assistant, whose roly-poly physique is best suited for an easy chair, showed he was game by taking a hike. And he challenged newsmen to join him. Many did and were openly grateful to the remarkable Pierre because he hiked only a couple of miles. It was all in good sporting fun, and the entire nation shared in the enjoyment. BUT NOW OUR President has gone on the longer journey that we all must take some day. Although he has departed, his enthu siasm, for tolerance, fair play, and sporting participation lives on in the minds and hearts of people everywhere. As the eternal light burns, so will his inspiration for these and the many other fine qualities which he so earnestly fostered. 'Christ Child’s’ Village Is Busy CHRISTKINDL, Austria (NC) —The posi office in this Aus trian village named for the Christ Child expects to handle about 1,000,000 requests for its special Christmas postmarks before the service ends on Jan. 6. Austrian and other European youngsters address their ap peals for Christmas gifts to the mm 1* Christ Child rather than to San ta Claus. Parents or relatives who seek to have letters or gift parcels sent from Christkindl enclose them in other letters or extra wrappings addressed to the post office here. Postal workers stamp them with a postmark showing the Christ Child in a crib and send them on their way. President Asks For Dedication NEW YORK (RNS) — Pre sident Johnson, in a message accepting honorary chairman ship of Brotherhood Week, Feb. 16-23, called on all Americans to use that period as a time of “deep appraisal’’ and of re dedication to the “ideals of love and brotherhood.” The President’s message was released here by Dr. Lewis Webster Jones, president of the National Conference of Christians and Jews which sponsors the annual event. Next year’s Brotherhood Week will mark its 31st ob servance since it was first es tablished in 1934 during Presi- den Roosevelt’s administra tion. Since hen every Presi dent has served as honorary chairman. Alluding to the assassination of President Kennedy, Presi dent Johnson said that “trage dy is in our land.” But from this “darkness of our sorrow,” he stressed, “ought to come a new dedication o the ideals of love and brotherhood.” National chairman of the Week is former Rep. Brooks Hayes of Little Rock, Ark., prominent Baptist layman and special assistant to the Pre sident. The annual observance, ori ginally known as “Brotherhood Day,” grew out of a suggestion in 1933 by a Denver Catholic priest, Msgr. Hugh Mc- Menamin. He proposed that the NCCJ organize a special period when Americans of all religious groups could focus their attention on living together in goodwill and understanding. “Democracy cannot live in hate and fear,” the message continued. ' “Prejudice and bi gotry are the advance guard of failure. “No better time exists for a searching of our hearts and mind than this national obser vance of brotherhood. Let us hear again the faith of our forebears; let us listen again to the inspired hopes of our national conscience; let us obey again the word of our religions. “In this time, stilly heavy with sadness, I urge all my fellow Americans to join with me and the National Conference of Christians and Jews in this national community celebration of tolerance, truth and charity toward our neighbors, where- ever they live, whoever they are.” tv* or imift*^ m gets ’em SINCE 1888 fRKINSPECTIONVCAU. 231-3040 OBITUARIES Mr. F.
