THE FIGHT GAME
Changes Are Needed
BY RONDEL
Unlike other sports which have a rabid following of loyal fans,
boxing is a spectator sport followed by many middle of the road-
ers. How many “loyal” boxing fans sitting in front of their TV
sets screaming for blood during the Paret: fight vociferously
decried the "sport” when they learned of the shocking result of
the nationally televised bout?
Paret, who later died of injuries sustained in the bout, and
Emile Griffith, the eager young pugilist who sent him to the
canvas for his last count, collaborated, for all intents and pur
poses, including the boxing world a TKO which will set it back
five years.
The Miami state boxing commission recently adopted a new
timing system that will definitely prove an asset to the fight
-game.
The new ruling provides for 12
second resting periods in between.

Longtime boxing physician Dr. Leo M. Davidoff claims that the
new innovation will cut boxing injuries by 60%. "Already 90%
of the boxing injuries occur in the late rounds or at the climax of
a round. Dr. Davidoff said the new rule will mean that the boxers
can conserve their energy and will not be prone to injury from
fatigue,”
“The number of former boxers suffering from poverty or chro
nic boxing injuries is astronomical. Few former boxers are skill
ed in any other occupation, and this is where the trouble lies.
Too many turn to crime or are victims of mental disorder or
narcotics,” quipped the doctor.
Boxers of the current era are in agreement with pugilists of
the 1950 years on the weak points of the sport.
Reigning light-heavy-weight champion Willie Pastrano, and for
mer heavyweight titilist Rocky Marciano both claim that the trouble
is a result of the boxing world’s not having a leader.
"Boxing needs a czar,” says Rocky. “A man that will oversee
or have a hand in all professional matches. He should have the final
decision on controversies. A respected, well known boxer would be
the most logical choice, though a veteran boxing layman would
suffice,” Marciano added.
"I’d say that a pension plan would be one of the best moves box
ing could make”, said the current LH champ.
Pastrano went on to say: “If boxing had a pension plan com
parable to that of the major league baseballers, fewer boxers
would attempt to continue boxing past their prime in an effort
to make a buck.”
The handsome young Louisianan, who will defend his light-
heavyweight crown against fourth ranked Irish Wayne Thornton
of Fresno, Calif., in August, drawled noticeably with his sou
thern accent.
“Just take a look around at the number of fighters in the
ring today who should be retired or at home taking care of their
families. These men have seen their better days, but have to
keep going because it’s the only trade they know.
Willie breathed deeply, adding with a smile: "I don’t mean
me of course. I'm only 27.”
Boxing needs a czar, a commissioner comparable to the ones
employed by football, basketball and baseball. It needs a pension
plan. It also needs unity and stricter physical qualifications.
3 - * - . * r i .3 /\ A .
Longtime boxing trainer Pat Di Furia of Fresno has this to
say about physical qualifications. "Today's requirements and
medical exams are strict enough, but too many substitute fighters
manage to slip by. There isn’t enough time to examine them
properly, as they very often fill in on a moment's notice.”
Boxing has, like all other sports, a number of diehard fans.
To say that the sport is losing patrons would be untrue. To say
that the percentage of diehard fans is getting fewer is a more
accurate definition.’
One of the major keys is the unification of the major boxing
organizations. The NBA, WBA and all the other lesser groups
should merge under one name, and under one czar.
Many safety steps have been taken since the last fatal boxing
death, but there will have to be more. The deaths may not occur
from blows sustained in any one particular bout, but in all pro
bability will be the result of "one too many.”
It is unlikely that even one "fan,” who watched the tragic
Paret fight via living room vidio, lost interest in the sport be
cause of that one incident.
Boxing is at this crossroad. It must conform and take some po
sitive action in the way of organization, safety and pensions, if it
hopes to fight back from the knockout blows it has received during
the last 18 months.
