THURSDAY, JANUARY 9, 1964 GEORGIA BULLETIN PAGE 7 SPORTS PICTURE Dodger Series Win Was Top ‘63 Latest Movie Listings Knights 7th Mardi Gras Plans BY RONDEL In our book, as in the journals of most sports scribes who keep that kind of thing, the Los Angeles Dodgers series sweep of the New York Yankees must rank as the years top sports story. The sweep, unprecedented and most certainly unpredlcted ex cept in certain pro-dodger corners where a sense of reality is often lacking, was the first in history ever suffered by the mighty Yankees. Sandy Koufax added insult to injury by beating the Yanks twice, and establishing a new one game series strikeout mark of 15. Dandy Sandy whiffed 15 futile Yankee batsmen in the opening game to shatter Carl Erskine's ten year old of 14. In second spot among the top sports accomplishments is Sonny Liston's seconf straight quick one-round knockout over outclassed Floyd Patterson. Louisiana’s John Pennel’s 17 foot pole vault earned him the number three spot, while the professional football scandal involving "golden boy" Paul Hornung and Detroit's Alex Karras ranked number four. The boxing world’s second fatality in less than a year, the death of Davey Moore in his Los Angeles title fight ranks as num ber five. Loyola's upset victory over the highly touted Cincinatti Bearcats ranks as the top basketball story and the number six sports scoop of the year. Wally Butts' victorious multi-million dollar libel suit against a major magazine must rank among the top sports stories. Butts’ succeeded in clearing himself from the allegations hurled at him from the Saturday Evening Post with charges of having fixed a ball game. Joey Giardello’s upset surge to take the middleweight crown from fighter of the year Dick Tiger ranks number eight. The Chicago Bears winning of the Western Division title over the narrowly second Green Bay Packers, and the Bears subsequent victory over the New York Giants was selected as this writers number nine choice. Chuck McKinley’s victory at Wimbledon and the United States’ victory over Russia in a dual track meet tied for the number ten spot. Other notable accomplishments in the world of sport that deserve mentioning are: The death of Gene "big Daddy" Lipscomb, Yogi Berra being named manager of the Yankee’s, the death of youthful Ernie Davis, a kid who might have been one of pro foot ball’s greats, Jack Nicklaus becoming the youngest winner of the Masters Golf Tournament in history, Gordie Howe shattering Mau rice Richards all-time hockey scoring record and Chateaugay’s Kentucky Derby victory over Never Bend and Candy Spots. We find at this time of the year a "Sportsman’s Prayer’’ run ning through our mind as penned by an anonymous sports writer: "Dear God, help me to be a sport in the Game of Life. I don't ask for an easy place but only the stuff to give 100% of what I’ve got. Help me to take the bad breaks, to understand the Game is full of knocks and trouble And at the end, I’d only like to know that I’ve been a game performer.’’ Louisiana’s John Pennel’s 17 foot pole vault earned him the num ber three spot, while the professional football scandal involving "golden boy" Paul Hornung and Detroit’s Alex Karras ranked number four. .
