Ara Parseghian
Man—Challenge
BY RONDEL
Notre Dame University is entering a new Era.
The hiring of Ara Parseghian as head football coach at Notre
Dame clearly indicates that the school is dead set on pulling out
of its gridiron slump of recent years, and fully intends to rebuild
its standing among the nation’s top football powers.
At the same time, however, you can rest assured that the South
Bend institution has no intentions whatsoever of compromising its
rigid academic standards for the sake of football glory. The pursuit
of academic excellence will remain the school’s primary goal.
While this has been overlooked generally, Notre Dame broke
with a couple of long standing
traditions in hiring Parseghian
away from Northwestern Uni
versity. For years, Notre Dame
unfailingly appointed its own
alumni to guide its football
fortunes and athletic programs.
Parseghian is a graduage of
Miami University of Ohio.
Parseghian is also the first
non-catholic coach to rule at the Irish school since the immor
tal Knut Rockne. Rockne mentored Irish squads from 1918 to
1930 when he died in a plane crash. Rockne converted to the
catholic faith in 1925. He was baptized by the late Father Vincent
Mooney.
Going back 46 years, all of Notre Dame’s head football coach
es were alumni of the school. This includes Hugh Devore, Joe
Kuharich, Terry- Brennan, Frank Lehay, Elmer Layden, Hunk
Anderson and Rockne. The late Irish coach who was not an alum
nus was Jess Harper who coached the Irish eleven from 1913 to
1917.
These statistics point a convincing finger at the fact that Notre
Dame is determined to regain its former stature as a consistant
grid powerhouse.
The selection of Parseghian was no random choice. Ara is
quite familiar with the problems that he must rectify at South
Bend.
When Parseghian manned the helm at Northwestern eight years
ago, the Wildcats were '’breathers" on the schedules of the pow
erhouses. They had won only seven games in the four years prior
to Parseghian.
There were even rumors that the Wildcats intended to pull out
of Big Ten football because as a private school the Wildcats could
not compete against state supported schools such as Ohio State
and Michigan.
Mr. Parseghian never won a Big Ten championship at North
western, but he did rejuvenate the school’s athletic program. His
teams won 36 games, lost 35 and played one tie under his tute
lage. Its no secret that Parseghian is expected to do better at ND.
During the same period that Parseghian was winning at North
western the Irish were getting their lumps (literally). Notre Dame
won only 34 games while losing 45 during the same eight year span.
This is not so disheartening unless you stop to consider that there
were two very fruitful years in the string-1956 and 1958. Three
seasons were climaxed with a .500 mark and three we’d rather not
mention.
With a performance like that, its understandable that some
people entertained the thought that ND might abandon football as
have so many other catholic colleges. But football at ND was dif
ferent. The Iris still continued to draw huge crowds and thus its
football program wasn’t costing the school.
Many sports scribes and ND followers raised the question as to
how long ND could continue to live of past gridiron glories. Par-
seghian’s job is to make sure that this question does not have to be
answered.

COACH COMB'S lOOth
Marist Cagers Win Three More Battles
BY PAUL APPLEGARTH
Coach Pete Comb’s Marist
Cadets swept to three straight
victories during 'the past week
to extend their record to 17-3
and their winning streak to 8.
These three victories were the
98th, 99th, and 100th victories
of Coach Comb’s 5 year career
at Marist,
In the first game, against
Sprayberry, the Cadets relied
on Bob Bockman’s 17 points,
EdMattingly's 12 tallies, and
Bill Reltmeier’s passing and
14 assists to pull out a close
one. At the end of three quart
ers, the Cadets led by only 4
points, but a last minute surge
gave the Cadets a 57-46 victory,
IN THE NON-REGIONCham-
blee game, Marist gained an
other victory, but lost some
thing, too. In the pre-^atne
warm-ups, Bob Bockman, one
of the Cadets top scorers,
sprained an ankle, and was
out for a week. Reltmeier
also was injured in the game
and was forced to sit out the
latter part of the game. But
these handicaps did not stop
the Cadets. Mike Hurst took
up the slack with 22 points, 10
rebounds, and 5 assists. Reit-
meier tallied 10 points, before
he was injured, and John Paris
scored 9. Chamblee pulled up
close against the second string

at the end, but the Cadets won,
62-58.
Last Saturday night, in an
important region game against
Campbell of Smyrna, the Cadets
blew the highly - ranked
Panthers out of the gym. At
the end of the first quarter,
the Cadets had run, shot, re
bounded, and defensed into a
21-8 lead. In the second quart
er, Campbell got hot and pulled
'withiru 6 # but then fell back,
and the Cadets coasted home,
68-58. Mike Hurst and David
McDuffie were high for Marist
with 19 points apiece (McDuffie
hit a fantastic 13 of 15 from
the charity stripe), and Eddie
Mattingly followed closely with
14 markers. This victory gave
the region-topping Cadets an
8-1 region record.
