1 f QUESTION BOX Explain Two Dates (CONTINUED FROM PAGE 5) quite widely in many countries of Europe by 1582. The Lutherans of Germany and the northern coun tries of Europe, the Anglicans of Queen Eliza beth, and of course the Orhtodox countries of the East were not ready to subject themselves to a papal decree. So for many years and even for centuries in some countries different calendars were used. It caused great confusion and contin ues to give historians headaches. I believe it was in 1922 that Russia became the last country of western tradition to accept the Gregorian calen dar, in civil matters. Many of the Orthodox, however, continue to follow the old Julian calen dar. The 10 days retard of the 16th century has now become 13 days and will remain so for ano ther 136 years, when it will become 14 days. The important change made by Gregory XIII was the omission of a leap year every hundredth year except when the first two figures of that hundredth year are exactly divisible by four. Charleston ‘Refugees’ CHARLESTON, S.C. (NC)— Catholic and Protestant wo men’s religious organizations conducted the emergency cloth ing drive at Charleston Air Force Base to outfit U. S. de pendents arriving from Pana ma. The women and children flown here from troubled Panana ar rived in 23 degree weather, most of them dressed in light summer clothing. Chaplains, led by Father (Capt.) William Haley, arranged for the women’s organizations to collect clothing donated by Air Force personnel at the base. A "clothing shop" was set up and women and children were outfitted for trips to friends and relatives to await the out come of U.S.-Panana discus sions to ease tension which re sulted in death and violence there. EXCHANGE VISIT O F STUDENTS from Drexel High School to St. Pius X saw Christine Murphy, president of Pi-Hi Student Council (left) studying school paper with Diane Comer, vice- president of Drexel council. DA Y TOUR Drexel Students At Pius X St. Pius X High School re cently played host to visitors from Drexel High School. The meeting's purpose was to al low exchange between like student organizations from the two schools. Publications and student government were the main areas of discussion v Visitors from the new Catholic high school were Michael Bellamy, Carmen Comer, Diane Comer, Winette Ed ge, James George, and An drew Hill. Felicia Jeter, James Kin g. Cassandra Peters, George Terrell, Judith Wat kins, and Forrest Yancey com pleted the group. Accompany ing their students were Father Richard, C. P., and Sister Marie Immaculee, S. B. S. Drexel students arrived at St. Pius X in time to partici pate in a first-year journalism class. Sister Thomas Mar garet, C. S. J., the course’s teacher demonstrated the function of a school newspaper and the process of its publicat ion. During the new period, St. Pius X students took their tjfatffelj King FAMOUS ALL-PURPOSE DRESSING DELICIOUS ON 'Salads-Meats-Seafood "SOLD AT LEADING STORES" guests to lunch in the school cafeteria. A look at Pius X’s new stadium and a tour of the school rounded out the hour. The Drexel visitors then ob served a senior public-speak ing class and a discussion among English IV students. Last period of the day found the representatives of Drexel’s Student Council and new news paper in discussion with their Pius X counterparts. A mutual exchange of methods, pro cesses, and problems took up the full hour. The Drexel students were then guests at a St. Pius pep rally. Its first two digits from the left are divisible by four. It is commonly believed that the succession of the days of the week have never been distorted from their orderly sequence—not even from the days of Moses who proclaimed the Sabbath. I am not sure that historians would want to endorse this belief implicitly, but apparently this subject was of concern to the Fathers in Vatican Coun cil II, when they gave their approval to a fixed date for Easter. They approved any type of cal endar reform which would not interrupt the se quence of Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, etc. It is worthy ol note tnat tne council Earners made no attempt at reform. They do not want to jumble up the world's calendar again, but are willing to leave the reform to a competent inter national organization. I am sure that you did not expect all that when you asked your innocent question. Culialli and tin- Sins of Babylon—Am. Inti. Alxkizam, The Great—Am. Inti.
