ST. JOE DEFENSE dominat
ed the game as Pi-Hi was forced
to shoot from the outside while
the offensive machine capitaliz
ed on the opportunity. The re
sult was a 22-18 half-time lead.
In the second half the Hawks
continued their tactics and con
tended their lead to 12 points.
LATE IN THE game the Lions
began to close the gap until
only four points separated the
two scores. But two quick
field goals by Bruce Hill and
four foul shots by Jim Camp
bell plus a St. Joseph freeze
put the game on ice.
As the seconds ticked away
fans sat on the edge of their
seats intently watching the bat
tle. When the final buzzer
sounded Hawks poured from the
stands and mobbed their coach
and team while St. Pius sat in
amazement at the proceedings.
HIGH POINT MAN for the vic
torious Hawks was Bruce Hill
who fanned the nets with 14.
Fellow guard Jim Campbell fol
lowed closely with 12. Forward
Jim Frazier put up’ 8 points
and Center Larry Downing
bombed 9 goals. Charles Moore
hit 7 baskets and dominated the
backboards before fouling out
late in the game. He was re
placed by Ricky Jascomb.
In an earlier game, the Hawks
came from behind to win, 63-53,
over Pacelli High, Columbus.
TIED 14-14 GOING into the
second quarter, the Hawks
broke loose for 12 points while
holding Pacelli to 5 producing a
26-19 half-time lead.
Pacelli’s fast break stymied
the St. Joe Bombers as they
pulled to within one polng leav
ing the third period a 43-42
St. Joe margin.
FAST-BREAKING again in
the fourth stanza, Pacelli took
a 56-50 lead before the Hawks
applied the brakes. Thirteen
straight points by the Hawks
gave the home team a 63-56
victory.

recorder, four sets of earphones and other equipment to
Sister Mary Fidelia, S.S.J., director of St. Emeric School for
retarded children. Col. Kaiser learned about the school’s
need from a non-Catholic who has a child there. The ma
chine will help with speech therapy and in teaching- the
youngsters how to listen and follow directions. Between the
colonel and sister is Elizabeth, a student at St. Emeric’s.

AT IMMACULATE HEART
Two ‘Vocations’
Says Fr. Brennan
“Vocations — States of Life
— How They May Be Dis
covered and Furthered” was
the subject chosen by Very Re
verend Vincent Brennan, S.M.
when he addressed the Par
ents' Club of Immaculate Heart
of Mary School on February 2.
Drawing from his long exper
ience with young people and
their parents, Fr. Brennan had
many practical suggestions to
offer the mothers and fathers
present to help them in their
work of helping their children
find their places in God’s plan.
Examining the word “vocat
ion”, Fr. Brennan explained
that our primary vocation is so
to live that we may “be with
God forever”. Earthly vocat
ions are of two general types:
social— dealing with us as in
dividuals in society, helping so
ciety in the priestly or other
religious life orlnmarriedlife,
and personal, which refers
to the profession or line of work
chosen by the individual.
PARENTS HAVE the obligat
ion to help children prepare for
their social vocations. Mothers
and fathers are obligated to help
supply vocations to the church
and this may be done by foster
ing the religious life of the
home, by encouraging - though
not pushing the youngster who
thinks he or she may have a
religious vocation, by speak
ing well of priests, brothers,
sisters and the kind of lives
they lead, and by not placing ob
stacles in the way of a boy or
girl who w&nts to try out a
vocation in the convent or semi
nary. All of us can help by
avoiding the idea of branding as
a failure the person who finds,
after trying it, that the re
ligious life is not for him or
her.
Most of our sons and daugh
ters will choose the vocation of
marriage, and this is as it
should be, Fr. Brennan stated.
Parents, then, should give their
children the kind of background
which will prepare them for
happy, useful married lives.
Growing up in a happy family
is a wonderful preparation for
marriage; wealth is not neces
sary, but responsibility, help
fulness, and the ability to get
along together are. A good fat
her assumes the responsibility
for providing for the material
needs and spiritual leadership

FATHER BRENNAN
of the family; the good mother
helps as only she can, but neit
her parent should assume the
role of a servant, depriving a
child of the opportunity and ex
perience of doing things for
himself and others. Although it
is easier for mother to prepare
meals without the help of her
little daughter, she must re
member that little girls begin
by making messes but learn to
do better as they grow up so
that someday they are ready to
prepare good meals for the
young men they marry, and lat
er for their own families.
YOUNG PEOPLE today are
bombarded constantly with pro
paganda of the kind calculated to
undermine their ideals, mor
als, and ruin their lives. The
antidote for this is a positive,
not a negative approach to the
virtue of purity. Purity is not
based on a list of don'ts, but
on a few important do’s. If par
ents and teachers help young
people to see that their lives are
a preparation for the tremen
dously important vocations of
marriage, fatherhood, and mot
herhood, the virtue of purity is
seen as something worth striv
ing for.
As far as personal vocations
are concerned, Fr. Brennan
said that there are some 22,000
different lines of work in the
United States today. For the
majority of these, some college
training is needed, particularly
for boys.
Marist Tankers
Moving Ahead
Last year the Marist swim
ming team was formally dubbed
’The Dawn Patrol,” because of
their early hour practices. This
year the team would be more
properly called the “Minute-
men.” They have been hinder
ed by the lack of a regular
swimming facility. Therefore,
at the moment coach Graham
calls, the boys head to the pool.
Not having regular workouts
has not hindered their ability,
however. On February 1st, the
Cadets placed fourt h in the
Southeastern Interscholastic
Championship. Bryan Starr,
Marist’s All American, took
first place in the diving. The
Cadets freestyle relay team
took second, Ed Bosbyshelltook
fourth place in the freestyle
event.
