Requiem Held
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (NC)-Re-
quiem Mass for Mrs. Robert L.
Lawrence, first vice president
of the National Council of Ca-

St. Michael’s church here last
week.
She died (Feb. 3) as the re

Her husband Robert, who was
riding with her at the time, is
in a Memphis hospital with seri

Mrs. Lawrence, a Memphis
resident, was elected first vice
president of the NCCW in 1962.
She previously had served since
1960 on the NCCW board of
directors and had been active
in the Nashville Diocesan Coun
cil of Catholic Women.
“Both parents have the re
sponsibility to give their child
ren accurate information when
they first ask for it,” he con
tinued. “If the child receives
a frank answer in the beginning,
his natural curiosity will be
satisfied and he will usually
drop the subject.”

SAY CHRISTIANS
Still Blame Jews
For Crucifixion
NEW YORK (RNS) -- A pre
liminary report on a continuing
five - year analysis of anti-
Semitism in this country show
ed that the idea Jewish people
bear responsibility for the
death of Christ is still distres
singly alive.”
It said that this notion con
tinues to be a “cruel, critical
factor in perpetuating anti-
Semitic prejudice.”
THE REPORT WAS based on
a preliminary test in which ad
ult members of Protestant con
gregations replied to question
naires on their attitude toward
Jews. It was made by Benja
min R. Epstein, national direc
tor of the Anti-Defamation Lea
gue of B’nai B’rith, at the lea
gue's annual meeting here.
He said that 69 per cent of
the adult Christian church
members studied believed that
Jews are the group “most re
sponsible” for crucifying Jesus
Christ. Other findings were, he
said:
BELIEF THAT pontius Pi
late wanted to spare Jesus from
the Cross —- 81 per cent; that
he failed to spare Jesus be
cause “ a group of power
ful Jews wanted Jesus dead” —
48 per cent.
That Jews have been perse
cuted because “God is punish
ing them for rejecting Jes
us” — 19 per cent; undecid
ed on this question — 15 per
cent.
“significant development,which
could if adopted (at the Coun
cil’s third session in Septem
ber), presage a major and po
sitive change in attitudes
throughout the world.”
THE FIVE-YEAR study,
started in 1961, is being con
ducted by the Survey Research
Center of the University of Cal
ifornia in Berkeley. It was un
derwritten by a $500,000 grant
from the Anti-Defamation Lea
gue.
When completed the study
will cover such areas as pre
judice in adolescents, the re
lationship of Christianity to
anti-Semitism, political values
and anti-Semitism, the extent
and location of anti - Semitism
and American institutions sup
porting it.

THAT JEWS “cant never be
forgiven for what they did to
Jesus until they accept Him as
the True Savior”—45 per cent;
undecided — 18 per cent.
Mr. Epstein reported that the
proportion of persons indicting
Jews for Christ’s death was
smaller in large, liberal con
gregations than in conservative
and fundamentalist groups.
HE SAID 55 per cent of the
liberal congregations and 84
per cent of the fundamentalists
blamed Jews for the Crucifix
ion.
All groups, however, he said,
tended to remember Judas as a
Jew, not as a Christian and
that the "sinister connection”
was strengthened by the simi
larity between the words “Ju
das” and “Judaism.”
THE PRELIMINARY find
ings, Mr. Epstein stated,
“merely reinforce us in our
long-time speculation on the
role of church institutions in
developing ambivalent and often
tragic attitudes toward Jews—
a speculation that led to the
study itself.”
Nothing that Christian lead
ers have said that Christianity
owes a debt to Judaism for its
origins and tenets, Mr. Epstein
declared that the treatment of
Jews throughout history re
presents a "failure”
“I THINK,” he added, “that
Jews have every right to call
upon Christian leaders and fri
ends and expect that they them
selves will increasingly seek to
rectify the centuries - old in
justice — and barbarism — of
anti- Semitism. Christianity
better serves its high spiritual
purpose by serving as a shield
against prejudice not as its
lance.”
Referring to the Second Vat
ican Council’s proposed de
claration on Catholic-Jewish
relations which states that all
.mankind and not only the Jews
share the blame for Christ's
death, Mr. Epstein cited it as a
