( • MARIST CAGERS Cadets Drop Game To Close Season BY PAUL APPLEGARTH The Marist “Cadets” closed their basketball season last Saturday night by dropping a 52-45 shocker to Campbell of Smyrna. This upset, one of the most surprising in years, spell ed doom for the team’s hopes of post-season glory. In the two weeks before this tournament loss, the Cadets had gained two impressive victories to close regular season action. Marist played St. Joseph at Sacred Heart Gym and trounced the over-matched Hawks 70-50. The entire squad played, with Bill Reitmeier, Bob Bockman and Eddie Mattingly grabbing the top scoring honors with 14, 13 and 10 points respectively. Reitmeier hit 100% from the floor the first half, going 6 for 6. Mark Hamilton was Marist’s top rebounder with 8. Against Westminster, in an important region contest, the Cadets pulled away to a 21-4 first quarter lead and were nev er headed, Mike Hurst played a tremendgus game, tallying 30 points and grabbing 16 re bounds. Three other Cadets hit in double figures; Hamilton and Mattingly each had 14; Reit meier scored 13. The Cadets hit an excellent 85% from the foul line, but also gave Westminster many opportunities. The Cadets were in deep foul trouble for much of the game, with McDuf fie fouling out with 5, Hurst, Bockman and Hamilton riding the line with 4, and Mattingly having 3. Westminster pulled to within 6 in the 4th quarter but Marist emerged victorious, 76-68. In the region tournament, Marist ran into its usual first game jinx, although usually it comes in the first game in the state. The Cadets hit a mere 32% from the floor and 27% from the foul line. Reitmeier and Hurst were high scorers with 14 and 13 points respec tively. Smyrna’s potent Pan thers overcame a Marist first half lead and pulled away in the 4th quarter to a 52-45 victory. These three games ended the Cadet’s season. They closed the campaign with a creditable 23-6 won - loss record. Valentines Aid Mission Children of Sacred Heart School were busy last week us ing their imagination plus paper, crayons, glue, glitter, and candy hearts to construct fancy valentines. One rather unusual material was also used to decorate the valentines — money. The first and second graders decided that Instead of ex changing valentine cards amongst themselves they would send the money, usually spent for that purpose to the mission schools in Peru. Inspired by their good example the fifth and sixth graders joined the project and together amassed almost $50.00. Sister Leonella, C. S. J„ sug gested the “Valentines for Peru” project as a means for the children to practice self- denial while at the same time enjoying the Valentine tradi tions and customs. squad sports a 17 and 6 chart. The next contest will be a re gional tournament at Carson Neuman College in Tennessee. Two freshman, Raymond Warrell and Quinton Spitzer, plus upperclassmen Catherine Case and Thomas Brannan re presented St. Pius in the second team capacity.
