ST. JOHN’S READIES
Melkite-Byzantine
Holy Week Rituals
Holy Week services at St.
John’s Melkite Church begin
with the traditional colorful
procession held on Palm Sun
day Immediately after the
solemn celebration of the
Byzantine Liturgy of the Mass
at 11:30 a.m. This procession
symbolizes our Lord entering
the Holy City. At the end of
the procession the priest gives
the people and particularly the
children the annual and tradi
tional blessing of Palm Sunday
in the Melkite-Byzantine Rite.
On Holy Thursday evening
service held at 8:00 p.m.
Father Haddad sings the im
pressive Byzantine hymn: “To
day is hanged on a cross He
Who hung the earth on the
water. . .,’’ while carrying a
large cross on his shoulder
and walking through the aisles
of a dim-lit sanctuary, thus
symbolizing Christ carrying
His cross and going to be
crucified. At the end of the
procession the cross is placed
on top of a low mount while
the people come in line to kiss
the crucifix.
On Good Friday in a very
touching ceremony held also
at 8:00 p.m., the priest takes
down the corpus from the cross,
wraps it in white linen and
buries it in an illuminated tomb
decorated with flowers. After
wards, he intones with the choir
the beautiful Byzantine melo
dies of the burial, thus "sym
bolizing Joseph and the women
praying and lamenting near the
tomb. At the end of the service
the people kiss the cross and
receive from the priest a
blessed flower from the tomb.
SECOND AND third place
certificates for debating were
awarded to St. Pius X B team
and St. Joseph B team respect
ively. Honorable mention certi
ficates were awarded Drexel
High School for both negative
and affirmative debating.
Individual certificates were
also awarded to speakers who
showed exceptional talent in
debating. The title of top de
bater was bestowed upon Quinn
Spitzer of St. Pius while Thomas
Carr and Michael Harbin both
of St. Pius X tied for second
best debater. Also recognized
for their debating abilities were
Andrew Hill of Drexel; Robert
Roskind of Marist; Nancy Rhett
and Susan Smith of St. Joseph;
and Ray Warrell, Janet Youngs,
and Marcia Hair of St. Pius X.
The tournament was directed
by Thomas Nerney and Michael
Iredale, members of the St.
Pius varsity debate team, with
the supervision of Sister Mary
Elaine, debate coach.
Mrs. Elizabeth Fodor, Mr.
Frank Errigo, and Moderators
of the debating teams served as
judges for the tournament.

Our Lady’s Association for
Exceptional Children held its
third quarterly meeting on
March 15th at 2:30 p.m. in the
cafetorium of Immaculate Con
ception School. During a dis
cussion of the proposed con
stitution and by-laws the term
“exceptional children”, as used
in the title of the organization,
was defined as those who de
viate from what is supposed to
be average in physical, men
tal, emotional, or social cha
racteristics, to such an extent
that they require special ser
vices in order to develop to
their maximum capacity.
Following the business meet
ing Dr. Therese Hite, Director
of the Bobby Dodd Sheltered
Workshop and Fairhaven
School, and Mr. George H. Cole,
Assistant Director of the Bobby
Dodd Sheltered Workshop, pre
sented a program describing
the services provided for the
mentally retarded by their or
ganization.
Dr. Hite said that in their
program the dignity and worth
of the individual is stressed.
They strive to enable the child
to reach his maximum potential
and emphasize social skills as
well as the development of a
healthy self-concept. In Sep
tember they are planning to
open a work activity center for
older youngsters who do not
fit into the present program.
