James Hartnett, S.M., for the benefit of the Marist Seminaries. Fr. Hartnett acknow ledged the Guild's work on behalf of the Provincial of the Washington Province of the Marist Fathers. SEMINAR Y AID Burse Presented By Marist Guild The Marist Seminary Guilds meeting on Thursday, March 19, was of special significance. Mrs. Phillip S. Gage, Jr., Pres ident, presented a iburse ofr $500.00 to Fr. James Hart nett, S.M., who gratefully ack nowledged the efforts of the Guild in behalf of the Provin cial of the Washington Pro vince. The Guild wishes to thank the many Marist friends who con tributed to the success of the benefit card party on Feb. 9, the proceeds of which consti tuted ai substantial part of the burse. The new officers who were elected are, President, Mr. Walter A. Peacock; Vice Pres ident 8t Treasurer, Mr. Lee Benson; Secretary, Mrs. A. J. Schaefle. Mr. Peacock presid ed for the remainder of the meeting, thanking the outgoing officers for their untiring work of the past year, and asking for the cooperation of the Guild dur ing the coming year. Fr. James Hartnett, S. M. welcomed a new member, Mrs. ALTAR SOCIETY Mary Green, whose brother, Rev. James Louis Pratt, is stationed in Nampa, Idaho. Fr. Hartnett spoke on the life of St. Joseph, whose Feast Day was celebrated on March 19, and closed with the thought that all should endeavor to pat tern their lives after that of the Holy Family. STATE MEET Football and basketball pla yers and cheer leaders received their school letters at St. John's Catholic School in Hapeville at the annual St. Patrick's Day Athletic Banquet. Honored also were students who participated on the swimming and bowling teams. Guest speaker of the evening was Coach Bill Daprano of St. Joseph’s High School. A bronze plaque was presented to Robert F. Reilman, football coach at St. John’s the past 8 years, by Joseph Meyer, Athletic Direc tor. Five 8th-grade boys earned letters in both football and basketball. They were John Blackwell, Tony Meyer, Robert Rasnick, John Reuter and Ro bert Reilman Jr. Others who earned football letters were Mike Barnick, Robert Maher, Tom Mealor, Tom Keenan, Jeff Jerrell, JimLaFurgey, Ed. McCord, Richard Vogtner, George Beaubien, John Schill ing, Dennis and Jimmy Dunn, Steve McGinnis, Robert Foloin, Mike Augustine and Dan Vogt ner. Other basketball winners were Dan Cool, Bill Maleski, Steve Dolan, John Ferguson and Ed Samra. Cheerleaders who earned megaphone emblems were Diane Augustine, Patti Boyle, Janet Boemer, Connie Deskins, St. Joseph Girls Earn Swim Victory St. Joseph girls ended a suc cessful swimming season by placing third in the State High School Meet at Emory on March 14. Placing behind the strong teams of Brlarcliff and West minster, the girls scored in six events. Biggest feat was the first-place victory in the Med- lay Relay, which set a new State St. Gerard’s Group Hears Bible Talk Rev. Lawrence Murphy, C.S. S.R., pastor of St. Gerard's Ca tholic' Church, Fort Ogle thorpe, addressed the members of the Altar Society at the re gular monthly meeting held on March 19, 1964 in the school cafeteria. Ander son were appointed co-chair man for a second pancake breakfast planned for April 5th to be served after each Masa. The proceeds will be used to help pay for new lighting fix tures for the church, Mrs. Ralph Brown and Misa Harriet Orwlg will have the care of the altars during April, with Mrs. C.E. Hunt, chairman, In charge of preparing the church for the special Easter services. It was announced that the next meeting will be held on April 16th. Mrs. A.J. Farmer and Miss Orwig were hostesses and Mrs. R.L. Sampson received the at tendance gift. record. Swimming on the Relay were Juli Saxon, Paulette French, Joyce Gallagher, and Linda French. ANOTHER RELAY, the Free style, placed 5th in the finals. Joan Blakewood, Iris Cooper, Lorraine Bergln, and Patti Pa tron composed the team. In Individual entries, St. Jo seph had two finalists In the 200 yard Medley. Linda French gained a second place, and Irli Cooper brought In a fourth. Al so, freshman Joyce Gallagher took 5th In the 100 yard But terfly, while eenior Patti Pa tron placed 6th In the 200 yard Freestyle. HAVING ENDED their sea son, the team can count several awards and ribbon* for their past victories this year. High on the list la the first-place trophy they won for the school in the Georgia High School Re lay Meet. Doing a fine coaching Job was Coach Carlos DeCubas, Swimming Director at Atlanta Athletic Club. Carolyn Jordan, Kathleen Can non, Deja McLeroy, Jane Clarke, Kathy Sanchez, Patti Pierce and Mary McManus. Patti Boyle was voted Cheer leader of the Year. Coaches at St. John's include Mr. Reilman and Joe Barnick, football; John Randolph and Gene Ford, basketball; Joseph Gallagher, Swimming; Mrs. Rosendo Martinex, bowling, and Mrs. John Leary, Cheerlead ing. Our Lady’s Group Bridge Luncheon The fourth annual bridge luncheon sponsored by Our Ladys’ Association for Excep tional Children will be held from 10 till 3 Wednesday May 6 at the Dinkier Plaza Hotel. Mr. Norman Eidson, general chairman, announced his work ing committees at a recent meeting. Mrs. S.G. Lawrence will serve as assistant to Mr. Eidson; Business, Mrs. L.A. Paine; Stamps, Mrs. R.A. South Deanery Plans Meeting The South Deanery Council of the ACCW will hold a meeting on Sunday, April 5, 1964 at 2:30 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Pariah, Mllledgeville. Doctor James Craig, assistant Super intendent of Mllledgeville State Hospital, will be the guest speaker. A bus is being chartered for transporting members of the Atlanta area, and reservation* may be made by contacting Mrs. Margaret Barnes (Tel. 755- 9896). Fr. Hein Talk Father Hein, a Jesuit priest from Ignatius Retreat Houae, will talk on retreats at the March 30th meeting of the St. Gerard Guild held In the Imma culate Heart of Mary Cafe- torium at 8 p.m. There will be a short business meeting and a get-aqualnted hour following. WINNERS ANNOUNCED Science Fair Held At Marist School Marist School held its first Interschool Science Fair on last Friday. Judges were Dr. Boxer (chemistry) and Professor Goslin (physics) both of Ogle- thrope University, and Dr. Kas- riel (mathematics) of Georgia Inst, of Technology. The Fair was a grand suc cess and was viewed by parents and general public on Monday evening. There were about two dozen entries, covering all the fields of science. The winners will exhibit in the 16th Annual State Science Fair in Athens on Aoril 2 and 3.
