Emerick, S.M., conducted the reception. ST. LOUIS Clergy, Laity Join In Ecumenism Role Sec’y Lauds UNESCO VATICAN CITY (RNS) -- Strong Vatican support of the adult education program being sponsored throughout the world by the United Nations Educa tional, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) was voiced by Amleto Cardinal Cicognani, Papal Secretary of State, in a letter to its dire ctor general, Rene Maheu of France. "Even though the definite de tails of the campaign against illiteracy in the world will not be decided until the end of the year, the Holy See is alread- ing thinking about the great uti lity of the campaign in ques tion to attack one of the grave problems afflicting the world," Cardinal Cicognani wrote, ad ding.: 'The Catholic Church has always championed education since the beginning of her mission and is therefore most favorably disposed toward the international program, espec ially in its approach to the underdeveloped countries, which were in support of the great work that has already been carried out by Catholic missionaries and bishops on the spot." POPE DECLARES VATICAN CITY (NC)—Pope Paul VI has told a group of visiting doctors that their con cern is with the whole man, body and soul. Speaking in French to 200 participants in the seventh con gress of the Latin Medical Union, he commented on the lively interest the Church shows in the development of medical science. "THIS INTEREST on the part of a spiritual organism for the material field in which medi cine is applied might at first seem strange," the Pope said. "One might even be tempted to draw a line and accept for Instance a formula such as this: ’To doctors the body, to a priest ST. LOUIS (NC)—The Arch diocese of St. Louis has joined several other U.S. dioceses in cluding Atlanta, in establishing the soul.* But this oversimpli fied view would not harmonize with the deep reality of things. "MAN IS ONE. distinctions must be made of course, but what God has Joined together cannot be sundered. The doc tor who looks after the body cannot help taking into account moral and psychological fac tors in the patient, just as the Church, in caring for the souls of her sons, cannot ignore their physical and bodily condition. "Your art, your science, does not have diseases as its object, but rather the diseased," the Pope continued. "It is the whole human composite that benefits from your scientific knowledge and your practical abilities." a clergy-lay ecumenical com mission to promote interest in and knowledge of the ecumeni cal movement. With Joseph Cardinal Rit ter as its head, the commission will be made up of five priests and three laymen. CARDINAL Ritter said the new body "will endeavor to stimulate Interest in ecumeni cal matters. It will assist in the development of competent ecu menical specialists, both cleri cal and lay. It will have among its objectives the initiation of new forms of ecumenical acti vity, and will strive to broaden and deepen the theological foun dation of the movement local ly." The commission will have its headquarters at the offices of the St. Louis Review, archdio cesan weekly. Cardinal Ritter said this will be in order to con tinue the close collaboration of the Review with the ecumeni cal movement. THE NEWSPAPER’S late edi tor, Msgr. Daniel Moore, had been the Cardinal’s represen tative for ecumenical affairs. ‘Whole Man’ Should Concern Physicians POPULATION DRIFT ‘Welcome South’ Problem For Church In Britain LONDON (NC)—The Catho lic Church in England and Wales is faced with a massive struc tural upheaval. The population of the whole country is slowly drifting to wards the milder, softer and wealthier south of England and especially the southeast around London. THE GOVERNMENT has made some effort to check this drift by moving some of its own de partments and encouraging pri vate industry to set up plants and build new towns in the nor thern provinces. But with the building in a few years time of the planned tunnel under the English Channel, linking the southeast directly with con tinental Europe, the pace is expected to accelerate. The government in an offi cial survey issued in late March foresaw that by 1981 the popu lation in the southeast corner of England will have increased by at least another 3.5 million people. Of these at least 350,000 can be expected to be practicing adult Catholics. THE GOVERNMENT propos ed preliminary plans to deal with this influx into what is al ready the most crowded part of the country by building new towns, turning large tracts of existing farm land into resi dential dormitories and light Asks Declaration Cushing told an overflow con gregation at Christ church (Episcopal) here. In the sixth of a series of talks at New England Protestant churches, the Cardinal issued a ringing appeal for Christian unity. "LET NO ONE expect phy sical unity among Christians in our time," he said. "But there is another kind of unity that we can expect, the unity of love. Let us sow the seeds of love and understanding among one another." More than 400 persons crowded into the parish hall of the historic church, where George Washington worshipped during his stay in Cambridge to hear Cardinal Cushing speak. Devotions In Honor Of St. Antlony AT ST ANTHONY’S CHURCH EACH TUESDAY MORNING AT 11:30 Attend Mast or Mail Petitions To Monsignor J.E. King 928 Gordon St. S.W. Atlanta 30310. CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (NC)— A clear-cut declaration ensur ing all men’s right to freedom of conscience is "the biggest con tribution that United States Bis hops can make at the Vatican council," Richard Cardinal TERMITES SWARMING? industry areas and in fact changing much of the area into a vast scattered suburbia run ning from the south coast right into London Itself. The Church will have to plan accordingly. Much of the present strength of Catholicism lies in the in dustrial belts in the north and northwest of England and south Wales. Not only will their popu lations dwindle but the present diocesan resources in the south, as at present organized in money, churches, schools, clergy, teachers, will be insuf ficient to carry the strain. THE NEW population wave will be concentrated into four existing dioceses—Northamp ton, on the northern fringe of London; Brentwood, on the east; and Southwark and Portsmouth on the south. They are all al ready stretched to the limit of their resources. Now they will have to buy further land—probably at boom prices—for more churches, schools and other Catholic in stitutions and extend seminar ies and existing teacher training colleges. THE ENGLISH dioceses are at presentflnanclally and struc turally Independent and self- supporting. But the four outer London dioceses will no longer be so. A complete reassessment of the set-up of the Church in this country may be necessary. Plans for sharing the burden will have to be made. A central fund may have to be set up to control finances. CLERGY AND teachers may have to be drafted from one part of the country to another and more sought from over seas, new parishes laid out, more state aid sought for Cath olic education and perhaps even the present structure of the dioceses themselves changed.
