Bishop Suggests ‘In God
We Trust’ School Prayer
WASHINGTON (NC)~Bishop
Fulton J. Sheen suggested to the
House Judiciary Committee that
the Constitution be amended to
permit public school students to
recite “In God We Trust."
The Auxiliary Bishop of New
York criticized the U. S. Su
preme Court for bypassing Con
gress in decisions outlawing re
citation of prayers and Bible
reading in public schools.
BISHOP Sheen also said these
decisions seemed founded on a
"myth"—the necessity of pre
venting union of Church and
State. No church in the country
today wants establishment of
a religion, he said, and it seems
as if the high court therefore
has been attacking a myth.
QUAUFICA TIONS
Pope Hits Curia,
Papacy Critics
VATICAN CITY (NC)~Pope
Paul VI has urged the faithful
to love the Church and the pa
pacy and cautioned them against
"almost passionately looking
for faults."
In his usual Wednesday au
dience (April 29) in St. Peter’s
basilica, the Pope stressed the
comfort which the presence of
so many thousands of Catholics
from all over the world gave him
as head of the Church. He said
their loyalty "is our Joy, our
hope amid many apprehensions,
many needs and many sorrows
which as you may well believe
make our apostolic service so
grave."
CITING the example of St.
Catherine of Siena, whose feast
day was to be celebrated the
following da y (April 30), the
Pope noted her love for pope
and Church.
"The Church and the papacy
can and must love one another.
St. Catherine teaches us this,
even if they (the Church and the

fulness and charity then will be
greater, more intelligent and
more meritorious.
"THIS IS PERHAPS the les
son, which many moderns who
yet call themselves Catholics,
do not understand well, Intent
as they are and almost pass
ionately looking for faults In
the Church and in the Roman
Curia (the Pope’s administra
tive council), formulating criti
cisms which are not always
calm and at times not objec
tive," he said.
The Pope recalled that Jesus
once said: "Blessed is he who is
not scandalized in me," and the
Pope added: "The history of the
Church makes us meditate on
these words. . ."
HE SAD that "a son of the
Church who has a true under
standing of the Church and who
pays it the tribute of true char
ity will find, as Christ forecast,
the source of beatitude."

The Judiciary Committee is
considering 147 proposals to
amend the Constitution to nulli
fy the Supreme Court’s rul
ings. Hearings are expected to
last at least until mid-May.
APPEARING on the same day
(April 30) as Bishop Sheen was
Gov. George Wallace of Alaba
ma, who also criticized the high
court's decision.
But Wallace went on to attack
the court for taking part in "a
deliberate design to subordinate
the American people, their
faith, their customs and their
religious traditions to a godless
state."
Bishop Sheen spoke extem
poraneously for about 15 min
utes, arguing that the court’s
decisions amounted to passage
of a law "by men not subject
to the will of the people."
HE SAID Americans want the
First Amendment preserved.
But he added that if the court
is allowed to say there is "free
dom not to pray, without say
ing there is freedom to pray,"
the question arises of some
minority group being able to
put into effect article 124 of
the Soviet constitution which
allows freedom for anti-reli
gious propaganda, but not free
dom of religion propaganda.
The Bishop's proposal to use
"In God We Trust" was made
in response to a question rais
ed by Rep. Peter W. Rodino,
Jr„ of New Jersey. Rodino ask
ed who should draw up a prayer
for schools and what it should
be.
"I WOULD suggest the pray
er that every member of the
Congress is carrying with him
in his pocket—'In God We
Trust,' " the Bishop replied,
in a reference to the motto
emblazoned on coins.
The Bishop said he personal
ly would like more prayer, but
that he thought as an American
citizen, aware of the pluralism
of national life, he would be
satisfied with "In God We
Trust."
BISHOP SHEEN, in response
to questions from other com
mittee members, said that he
agreed there must be "cau
tion" in approaching a change
in the Bill of Rights.
The prelate declined to sup
port any of the specific pro
posals before the committee.
Rep. George Meader of Mich
igan asked the Bishop what
might happen if Congress at
tempted to do by law what the
court had done by legal inter
pretation.
"WOULDN’T THAT be a vio
lation of the Constitution’s pro
visions for freedom of reli
gion?" Meader asked.
With a smile,Bishop Sheen
responded that would be one ef
fect, but that there would be
another: "The House and Sen
ate would have an entirely dif
ferent membership after the
next election."
ANOTHER OPPONENT of the
prayer amendment vupsthe Rev.
Dr. Eugene Carson Blake, Stat
ed Clerk of the United Presby
terian Church in the U. S. A.
"I take alarm at this experi
ment on our liberties and urge
the committee to oppose any
change in the protections of
fered by the First Amendment,"
he said. "The Bill of Rights
should remain unamended for
the rights are inalienable."
Charles H. Tuttle, New York
attorney and a prominent Epis
copal layman, appeared before
the committee as general coun
sel of the council, a federa
tion of 31 Protestant and Eas
tern Orthodox churches.
"LIBERTY loses*its exalted
quality and meaning when the
majority of the moment can
compel a minority to subsidize
the majority's use of public
tax-supported institutions for
official dissemination of their
own religious beliefs and prac
tices," he said.
Appearing with Tuttle was the
Rev. Dr, Edwin Tuller of Val
ley Forge, Pa., general secre
tary of the American Baptist
Convention. He also opposed a
prayer amendment.
