CATHOLIC EDITOR
Appeals For More Candor
In Reporting On
Church
PITTSBURGH (NC) — A Catho
lic editor appealed here for
more candor in the Catholic
press in reporting the “back-
stage*’ life of the Church and
called it essential if laymen
are to become involved in the
Church’s mission.
Daniel Callahan, associate
editor of Commonweal magazine
and author of the book “The
Mind of the Catholic Layman,*’
called honest reporting about
the Church and the ecumenical
council “the great challenge
before the Catholic press to-
day.*‘
CALLAHAN, addressing
(May 27) the annual convent
ion of the Catholic Press As
sociation, said:
“The layman today does not
need to be told, ad nauseam,
how glorious the Church is.
Or how spectacular its triumphs
have been. Or how superior it
is to all other churches and in
stitutions.
“HE NEEDS to know what the
Church is, not only in its ideal
form, but what it is here and
now. He needs to know this,
not just for the sake of a true
Catholic Press
’Today the Catholic newspaper is not a superficial luxury
or an optional devotion, it is an instrument necessary for the
circulation of those ideas which feed our Faith, and which in
turn render a service to the profession of our Faith. . . .
“It is not thinkable today to live without having a fund of
thought, continually supplied and brought up to date on the
history which we are living and preparing; it is not possible
to have this fund of thought aligned along Christian principles
without the material, reminders and stimulus contained in the
Catholic newspaper.
“Let not it seem excessive to you, this our reminder of the
duty of every Catholic person, at least of every Catholic family
to be united by the spiritual and moral service which only such
a vehicle of news and ideas can bring each day.

perspective on the full reality
of the Church, but also that he
may see that his mind, his heart
and his will are needed for the
good of the Church.*’
Callahan's address was one
of several during the CPA
convention which discussed the
relationship of the Catholic
press to the ecumenical coun
cil and specific key issues con
fronting the Church today. Hi*
talk dealt with the press, the
council and the laity.
HE SAID it is an “abiding
temptation” of the Catholic
press to believe that “with
enough exalted, pious language
it can somehow erase the human
failings of the Church.”
He said the sensation created
by publication in the New Yorker
magazine and other secular
publications of candid reports
on the ecumenical council’s
first session had a salutary ef
fect on the Catholic press by
causing it to attempt to do
likewise.
CALLAHAN said this has had
“immense value*’ for the
Church in America.
“It has helped make clear to
the laity that real issues are
at stake,*’ he said, “that real
men are debating them, and that
* council is a human event in
the Church with human con
sequences .... Most laymen
back in 1959 could not get ex
cited about the council because
it seemed completely remote
from their lives. They do not
feel this way any longer, or
at any longer, or at any rate
fewer and fewer feel this way.
But this change in attitude could
not have come about until the
council had been shown to be
human.*’
AN APPEAL for honesty in
the Catholic press as an aid to
ecumenism was made by Father
Gregory Baum, O.S.A., director
of the Center of Ecumenical
Studies in Toronto and a con
sultant to the Vatican’s Sec
retariat for Promoting Chris
tian Unity.
Urging a view of the Church
that sees it as “a true socio
logical reality, not as a mor
alistic stage play,” Father
Baum said: “In the past we have
often been afraid to tell the truth
....Today, however, people are
shocked if they are not told the
truth.”
THE PRIEST said the secre
cy imposed on the ecumenical
council during its first session
gave Catholics and non-Catho-
iics alike the impression “that
the organizers of the council
were afraid of something.”
At the same time he recom
mended that Catholic editors
undertake “a continuing and
even more intensive program
of self-education in those fields
where the Church is having vi
tal encounters with the world
and with other Christian bod
ies."
HE SAID it would be useful
to all concerned if editors could
attend summer institutes at
which they would be brought up
to date by experts on theolo
gical and other issues facing
the Church.
