President Honors
High School ‘Elect’
WASHINGTON (NC)—Presi
dent Johnson preaented bronze
medallions here to high school
graduates selected as "Presi
dential Scholars." Of the 121
chosen, five attended Catholic
schools.
The President personally con
gratulated the scholars In a
White House ceremony yester
day. At least one boy and one
girl were chosen from each
state, the District of Columbia
and Puerto Rico.
Scholarship Corporation of
Evanston, 111., which annually
tests tens of thousands of high
schoolers. It awards college
scholarships which are sup
ported by Its own funds and as
sistance from other groups,
such as labor unions, corpora
tions and colleges.
THE CHIEF Executive estab
lished his program to recognize
superior academic attainment
on April 16. A ten-member
committee, aided by leading
testing and scholarship agen
cies, chose the recipients who
were announced June 2.
The scholars do not get a
monetary award or a scholar
ship. Those who need financial
help have already received It
from other sources, the White
House said.

Lebanese Dinner Sunday, June
14 at St. John's Melkite Church

Our Lady of the Assumption
Parish will host the quarterly
meeting of the Northeast
Deanery on Wednesday June
17th, There will be a Mass at
10 o'clock in the Church fol
lowed by a brief meeting, with
election of officers, and

The Maronites of Georgia
will welcome Bishop Fran
cis Al-Zayek, on Thursday June
18, 1964, in the Social Hall of
St. Joseph's Maronite at 502
Seminole Ave. N. E. with
A public Reception.
Bishop F. Al-Zayek, native
of Lebanon, recently came to the
United States to ordained the
First Maronite priest wholly
educated In the Catholic Univer-
sity of Washington D. C. in a
very ancient and beautiful cere
mony at the National Shrine of
the Immaculate Conception. His
Diocese is in Brazil.
He presided at the Annual
Maronite Convention held in
Washington and, upon the re
quest of many Maronite Pas
tors, started visiting some of
the 44 Maronite Parishes in
the United States.
Bishop F. Al-Zayek is well
known, In the Vatican City where
he served for more than six
years in the Roman Rota. He
is accomplished in seven lan
guages.
In the Seminary's days Bishop
Al-Zayek was a good friend of
Father Joseph Abi-Nader, pas
tor of St. Joseph's Maronite,
of Atlanta, Moreover, the Bis
hop’s relatives, in Beirut Le-

testimonial Banquet in his

ome, Senator, will address the
guests and His Excellency on

NCCW for dletrlbutlon in the neediest area* of Italy and other countries. Laet year the
clothing waa valued at more than $200,000. Half of It waa distributed, in parishes in
Africa.
