JOHN C. BENNETT Urges Catholic-Protestant Cooperation For Justice JERSEY CITY (NC)— A Protestant theologian called here for more cooperation bet ween Catholics and Protestants in seeking social justice and the common good. Dr. John C. Bennett, presi dent of Union Theological Semi nary in New York, singled out the problems of “self- sufficient secularism’* and civil rights as areas in need of in creased joint efforts by Cath olics and Protestants. DR. BENNETT spoke at the 72nd annual commencement of St. Peter's College here. He also received an honorary doctorate of laws from the Jesuit Fathers* school. On the problem of secula rism, he said that while he agrees with those who oppose prayer in public schools, at the same time he deplores the cur rent “atmosphere of religious inhibition*’ with respect to pub lic education and public life. "Instead of being hailed as a great solution by so many of our fellow citizens, the elimina tion of all symobls of Biblical faith from public education should be regarded as posing a major problem. How do Chris tian and Jewish memories get expressed in public education?’* he asked. AMONG possible solutions he suggested “shared-time** edu cation in which students take some courses in church-related schools and some in public schools, and teaching “about” religion as an academic sub ject in public schools. On civil rights, he said re ligious backing for the current rights drive has “proved that on the national level there can be a common Christian witness to the claims of justice as bet ween the races.” Dr. Bennett said that the civil rights bill, though an “es sential” instrument forflghting discrimination, will not itself solve the problems that exist in many northern cities. “Here," he said, “the pro blems of de facto segregation will call for new solutions,’* including the pressure of ^ “public conscience nourished in large part by religious faith,” DISCUSSING the improve ment in Catholic-Protestant re lations, he said there is a “growing realization” among PRIEST DECLARES Foreign Students Lack Direction CARY SANDERS Television, Radios Stereos TV SALES AND SERVICE 3759 Roswell Rd., N.E. S. colleges, THE SEMINARS, he said, were prompted by complaints from bishops and religious superiors in missionary coun tries who were "deeply dis appointed” by the lack of apostolic formation their young men received while in the United States. Some of the students were sent here on scholarships at considerable sacrifices to their churches, but returned as "total lossess” to the apostolate in their homeland, he said, APART FROM the early seminars sponsored by the CSMC, and those continuing at Crossroads, an ICA students center in Chicago, few col leges have held such seminars, he said. A 1960 survey indicated that more than 40 colleges were in terested in the foreign-student* seminars, Msgr, Freking de clared, but he said that few of those have shown any progress. Most of the seminars have been arranged by non-student or off- campus groups, such as sodali ties, seminarians, Young Christian Students and inter national lay organizations, ANSWER fO LAST WEEK’S PUZZLE Protestants that “what is good for the Roman Catholic com munity as they have come to understand it is good for them also and good for siciety at large.’* ‘There remain issues that are divisive in American life that come from different con victions and practices among Catholics and Protestants,’* Dr. Bennett said. "But increasingly, and es pecially as these issues touch the use of political power, there are enough differences both within the Catholic community and within the Protestant com munity to enable us to discuss them without allowing the na tion to be caught on the poli tical level in a collision of two religious absolutes.” Latest Movie Listings CLASS A — Section I — Morally Unobjectionable fer General Patronage REVIEWED THIS ISSUE Hey There, It’* Yogi Bear—Col.
