? DURING TWO WARS Texas Widow Who Adopted Servicemen Holds Reunion YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (NC)—A Texas widow, who solved the problem of loneliness after her husband's death by "adopting” 184 servicemen, held a reunion here with patfgBf her king-siz ed family, Mrs. Maude Cozart, a mem ber of Holy Name of Jesus par ish, Ft. Worth, came here on her vacation and visited 15 World War II and Korean War veterans whom she befriended when she was hostess at the USO-National Catholic Com munity Service club in San An tonio, Tex. MRS. COZART was no ordi nary hostess. She owned a chic ken hatchery, and often invited groups of soldiers to her home for a chicken dinner. She took them on picnics, showed them the sights of San Antonio, bak ed them birthday cakes and held a continual open house. ‘T never looked on it as charity,” she explained, "be cause I got so much enjoyment from their friendship. I did it because people look down on servicemen, and they were just kids—19 and 20 years old—far away from their own homes.” WHEN HER "sons,'' one by one, left San Antonio for over seas, she gave each a steel- jacketed Bible to carry in a breast pocket. Wlille here, Mrs. Cozart was the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Frank DePerro and their family,*" pf St. Charles parish. DePerro. returned some of the hospitali ty Mrs. Cozart extended to him when he was stationad^pt Kelly Field in 1942. «He arranged a reunion for her with former servicemen from New Jersey, Missouri, Michigan, and Ohio. WIVES AND children of the 15 ex-GIs brought the party up to 50. They assisted at Mass together in St. Charles church. Mrs. Cozart, a youngsters a gift. The reunion included a tour of a steel mill, a swimming party, banquet, cookout and plenty of scuttlebut about life in Texas, Army style. Mrs. Cozart said her "boys” haven't changed much, except RIGHTS WORKERS for the addition at "several pounds and tew gr*f - Mrs.” SHE KEEPS in touch with her adopted family through Christmas cards and a 'news letter she sends to each.one ©vesry January. She signa^he letters with a.'‘God Blase You” from “Mom.” *The newsletters contain the names and addresses of the ex- servicemen, and chit-chat about their families and jobs. She had a reunion seven years ago with 10 "sons” from Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey and plans another reunion in Chi cago in 1970. Mrs. Cozart never will have difficulty locating two of her "adopted sons”—Clifford Mel- drum of St. Louis and George Rutkowski of Detroit. They married her two daughters. The • Meldrums have given her nine grandchildren, the Rutkowskis, six. Council of Churches Offers Miss. WHILE NOT identifying the donor, "for reasons of his own security and effectiveness,” Dr. Spike described him as an active layman in his local church and a responsible com munity leader. He live^fcn an area "which has begdTthe scene of major civil wits demonstrations and ^considerable police brutality ing the past two years,” the urchman said. THE REWARDwas offered in the hope, he added, that the move will encourage others to contribute funds. “This gentleman has been active in trying to find solu tions to problems in his own community,” Dr. Spike said, “but he also feels that such despicable outrages as the in cident in Philadelphia, Miss issippi, are properly the con cern of the entire nation.” WHILE THE disappearance Michael Schweraer, 24, and Andrew Goodman, 20, white students from New York, and James Cheney, 21, Negro of Meridian, Miss.# is .‘‘by no means an uncommon, oc curence” 'n the state, the NCC official said, some “good white Southerners trying to act responsibly. . .simply do not know that such incidents have been happening with sickening regularity for many years” even when they take place in or near their own communities. Dr. Spike called on "Chris tians throughout the South who know right from wrong” to "take heed from present events and move to avert tragedy in the future.” EFFORT TO "delay justice in order to preserve the peace can only provoke further violence," he said. Persons wishing to augment the award were advised to con tact the NCC race commission at the Interchurch Center in New York. Archbishop Georges Hakim, the only resident Catholic bis hop in Israel, told a group of priests at a Georgetown Uni versity liturgy institute that unity can better be achieved by voluntarily adapting one's own customs than seeking to impose them on others. "IF WE are looking for unity we must go along as far as we possibly can with the Ortho dox," he said. ”1 have no doubt but that the liturgical movement will have salutary effects on all—non-Christians as well as Orthodox and Protestants. 1 have been very happy to see the exchange that has taken place among us.” Archbishop Hakim, spiritual leader of 24,000 Melkite Rite Catholics in Israel, noted the step-by-step improvement of Catholic - Orthodox relations under Popes John and Paul: "First Pope John said that both sides were responsible for the schism. Pope Paul on opening the second session of the coun cil said that ‘if' we have sin ned we ask forgiveness. At Jerusalem he left no more ques tion: We have sinned and ask ANSWER TO LAST WEEK'S. "IF WE are going to be Cath olic not only as regards terri tory and time but also as re gards customs,” Archbishop Hakim said, “then we must be open to all sorts of new prayers and ceremonies.” He cited the difference in Christmas cus toms between East and West, saying: "Only since St. Fran cis of Assisi have you had the custom of exhibiting the manger at Christmas time. We don't have such a custom. But we still believe just as firmly In the In carnation, and celebrate Christ mas with just as intense solem nity.” Archbishop Hakim said that in the present ecumenical at mosphere attempts should be made to bring whole churches together—"not by way of re turn to the one true fold, but In the spirit of reconciliation of two erring and repenting groups.” CLASSIFIEDS HOUSES FOR SALE Well arranged one floor house on secluded street with private pool membership available. 5 large bdrms., 3 1/2 bths., study, 16x16 screened porch with bro ken tile floor, mahogany panel led fam. room - kit. comb, with fireplace.
