LOUIS (NC)— The Sec ond Vatican Council’s Consti tution on the Liturgy is such a profound and moving manifesto that "it has precipitated a cri sis in the Catholic conscience, according to one prominent lea der in the field of religious education. Father Robert W. Hovda of Fargo, N. D., asserted that this "crisis" while beginning at the altar carries over into the social order and summons Catholics to join in attacking such problems as racism, pov erty and excessive armaments. religious house on the planet-— to pretend that nothing has hap pened." He went on to say: "WE MUST act now. We have no choice. . . We must ait particularly with respect to the hour of Sunday Mass, for that is the center, that is the hub—that is where the emerg ing Church is being created, fashioned, filled with life. ’The liturgy,’ the consitution tells us, ’is the summit towards which the activity of the Church is directed; at the same time it is the fount from which all her power flows.’ "This worship is the ‘fount’ and ’summit’ of a broader and committed life. Se we must act, too, in catechetics. We must act in schools and seminaries and novitiates. We must act in our approach to missions and in relations with our fellow- Christians. We must act con cerning the respective functions and competencies of clergy and laity and religious in the Church. "WE MUST act in witness to the social order, boldly attack ing the problems of excessive armaments, poverty, racism, all of those thorny contradic tions which reduce our Euc haristic unity and love to mean inglessness in the eyes of the world." Father Hovda held that the Christian’s participation in the mystery of Christ’s death, re surrection and ascension "will becom e inc re as ingly vivid, re al and powerful in our lives as our sacramental worship en gages hearts and minds and bodies, and as it makes us a people, a community." In this way, he said, "it will be given to us to see the dy ings and the risings faith re quires." Chamblee, Ga. 636-8214 Society of St. Vincent de Paul Salvage Bureau 326 Ivy St. N. E.
