JELLS MEMPHIS MEETING
Newman Apostolate Needs
Serra Faculty Volunteers
Father O’Qwyer told the Ser
ra ns that the Newman movement
is not a substitute for a Catho
lic college education, but he
pointed to the great shortage of
priests to minister to Catho
lics on secular campuses, and
he recommended that Catho
lic colleges “disseminate their
faculties to offer at least a
minumum of courses In our
Newman centers.'* **We must
pool our resources, forget age-
old ‘ghettoes’ within the walls
of our own institutions’*, he
said.

tolate on secular campuses.
“Give us... a Serra faculty
for Newman'* was the recom-
comendation of Father John C.
0,Dwyer, Little Rock, Ark.,
diocesan director of the New
man Foundation, in an address
to District 18 of Serra Inter
national here (Sept. 12). Father
O'Dwyer is the Newman Club
chaplain at the University of
Arkansas.
THE chaplain pointed to sky
rocketing enrollment of Catho
lic students on secular cam
puses, to the growth of re
ligious vocations resulting from
the Newman Apostolate, and
then called for volunteer college
professors from among the pro
fessional men who are Seirans.
He said the task facing the
Newman movement “is far be
yond the capabilities of the
Church, now and in the future..
The laymen of this country are
the key and the answer,’* he
asserted.
FATHER O’Dwyer spelled out
areas In which Serra ns can help
the church provide for the re
ligious welfare of more than
725,000 Catholics who will study
on secular campuses this year.
He said that by 1980, “amodest
estimate by N.C.W.C. warns us
to expect 2.3-million.“
“Give us the Serrans,’*
Father O'Dwyer urged, “to as
sist or complete our staffs as
instructors offering subjects in
keeping with your college train
ing.
“Give us for our staffs the
Catholic doctor to Instruct and
counsel the pre-med and medi
cal students, as wellas the pre
nursing and nursing candidate.
“Give us the Catholic law
yer to instruct, counsel and ad
vise the Catholic law students.
“Give us the Catholic psy
chiatrist and psychologist to
counsel with us, and assist in
one of the growing needs of our
apostolate— counselling the
Catholic.
“Give us the banker, the busi
ness executive, the agricultura
lists, the Journalists, the sales
men and representatives from
all fields.
“Give us the Catholic man and
wife to assist with the growing
number of married students.
“And above all, Serra, join
hands with Newman in a most
neglected field for future la
borers in the vineyard of the
Master..."
