At the afternoon and evening sessions, Msgr, Tarrant will speak on Articles 1 and 11 of the Con stitution on the Liturgy and at the evening banquet for the ACCM, Mary Perkins Ryanwill again be the principal spaker. The Archdicoesan Liturgical Conference begins at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 22, withan assembly for the clergy, to be addressed by Msgr. Dan iel Tarrant and Mr. John B. Mannion. Peter and Paul Church opened their year with the school prin cipal, Mother M. Edmunda, as guest speaker. Mother was introduced by Mrs. A. D. Kuhl- mann, program chairman. Be fore entering into her talk, Mother introduced Sisters Maria Laetitia, M. Judith Ann, M. Rita Regina and M. Cel- ina to the ladies. The enrollment has increas ed from 7'9 two years ago, to 371 pils this year. She discussed catholic educa tion in general and explained various school policies in cluding the grading system, parking lot safety and school uniforms. Father Michael Manning ex pressed gratification that the school this year has the same group of Sisters and lay teach ers as last year. Mrs. John F. Betsill, president, introckiced the new committee chairmen, after which refreshments were served. Inquiry Class At Sacred Heart The liturgy of the mass is be ing stressed for the inquiry class that has begun instruc tions at Sacred Heart Church with an enrollment of 19. The pastor, Father J, Roshetko, ex presses gratification at the spirit of the inquirers. Assist ing in the course are Fathers George J. Meiiuta and Philip J. McArdie, Sponsors are the Misses Clare, Maude and Isabel Van Houten. The course will tontinue for 14 weeks. Father Roshetko has announ ced that a mission will begin the last week in October, Six Decatur girls have been named as candidates for the first annual Sweetheart Ball to be held on Saturday, Oc tober 10, 1964, at the #660 Council Hall on the Buford Highway. Sponsoring the gala affair is the Ladies Auxiliary of the Father Thomas O’Reilly Knights of Columbus of the De catur Area. Mrs. M. J. At the North Carolina Scholastic Press Institute held June 22- 24 in Chapel Hill, the annual THE MARGUERITE, receiv ed first place in the competi tion for yearbooks published by schools with an enrollment of less than 750 students. In the same competition, the paper, THE D’YOUVILLITE,. received second place in the same division for Its feature articles. In a survey conducted by the Catholic School Press Associa tion at the Marquette Univer sity College of Journalism, the D’YOUVILLITE received first honors for its publica tions during the year 1963- 64. Singled out for particular commendation were the layout, writing styles, and variety of articles. On Sunday, September 6, 1964 Mother Mary Kevin, G, N. S. H„ died at Holy Redeemer Hospital, Meadow- brook, Pa. Mother Mary Kevin, a mem ber of the General Administra tion of The Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart, entered the Con gregation August 26, 1920, Her entire religious life was spent in the Educational field, having taught in the schools of Lowell, Mass., Mahanoy City and Philadelphia, Pa, Atlanta, Ga„ Buffalo. Ogdensburg, Co rona and Jackson Heights, N, Y. Solemn Mass was celebrated in St. Ann Auditorium, Mel rose Academy, on September 8, 1964, by Reverend John Conway, C. M. Merit scholarships are four- year awards to cover under graduate expenses, tailored according to the recipients’ needs. Last year, Florence was winner of the Southern Re gional award given by the Ford- Future Scientists of America Program and of first place in the state - wide examination sponsored by the American As sociation of Teachers of French and second place in the state wide competition sponsored by THE OPENING of Our Lady’s Day School for Exceptional Children took place last week at the new quarters for the school at 631 Harwell Road, N.W. E. qualif ied as one of 14,000 seniors throughout the country who at tained the honor as a result of the National Merit Scholarship qualifying Test given in more than 17,000 high schools last March. It is normal for the mem bers of the Holy Name Society at the. Shrine of the Immacu late Conception Church to attend the 9:15 Mass, receive Comm- the 9:15 Mass, receive Com munion in a group and enjoy a breakfast meeting in the social hall on the 2nd Sunday of each month. A speaker or group add special interest to the program which make an interesting, edu cational and enjoyable meeting. To all this, something new was added at the last meeting. At the suggestion of the Holy name President, Mr. Gaspe- rini, the September meetings this year and in the future will be devoted to the good Sisters of our Parish. It will be an oppor tunity to show them our appreci ation for their being with us at the Shrine, and as an expression of thanks for their efforts on behalf of our children. While the Sisters were unable to attend the breakfast, arriving at the start of the meeting were Srs. Mary Amabilis, Mary Madeline, Mary Amata, Mary Amalia, Mary Co lumbia, Mary Simeon, Mary Barbara and Mary Michael, R.S. M. SISTER Mary Madeline, Prin cipal of the school introduced the Sisters and chose as the subject for her talk, "Man". The good Sister said she was glad Men are running the world as women have a knack cf making a mess of things. She also spoke on the part men play in the world, as husbands, fathers and of course Christinas, stressing the importance that all men should be fair with all others in their dealings. Both Father Arthus and the Vice-President of the Society thanked the Sisters for giving of their time to be with us, and especially Sister Madt ine for her excellent remarks. FATHER Arthur also spoke on the forthcoming Shrine Fall Festival to be held in the Social Hall of the Church, Thursday and Friday, November 12th and 13th.
