Mix ing a good offense with a stout defense. Coach George Mal- oof’s Lions racked up theirfifth victory without a defeat. Opening action saw a num ber of penalties and a few ex changes of punts. Fired up with this success the defense struck again. Safety- man Joe Malvihill blocked a Christie Hauck punt and the Lions recovered. FROM ABOUT 35 yards out, John Griffin, quarterback, took over and directed the team goalward. The key play here was a 10 yard first down pass to Steve Raville. Finally carry ing the ball over was junior fullback Steve Freant on a two yard buck. The PAT was wide. St. Pius again put points on. the board in the third quarter. Dave Hammond, working on de fense, tackled Hauck in me Cade end zone for two more, making it 8-0. Scoring matters came to a close when Mulvihill inter cepted and raced 15 yards to pay dirt. FRENCH EXPERIMENT Priest-Worker’ Debate Renewed PARIS (NC)—The long-dor mant but never settled contro versy over the celebrated "priest worker” experiment in France has come alive again with virtually simultaneous pronouncements with divergent views on the question. On the one hand a prominent author has published a book as serting that some priests en gaged in the apostolate among the working class have taken active roles in “the fight for the liberation of the pro letariat.” ON THE other hand came the charge—from a group ol priests who .disobeyed their bishops* orders to give up their jobs and their life among the workers a decade ago—that the Church is so enmeshed in the capitalistic system that it can not make real contact with the working classes. These priests asked that the Church adopt an attitude of self-denial and aid the workers in their struggle , to be free. The book on the subject is a novel entitled 'The New Priests,” It is the work of Michel de Saint-Pierre, 48, member of a noble family and a writer who is well known for an earlier novel, 'The Aris tocrats, which was made into a movie. De Saint-Pierre uses the new book as a vehicle to denounce "the breed of progressive priests,” He says that in their zeal to bring Christ to the working class, which he states is dominated by communism and Marxism, they invent new meth ods for the apostolate which are questionable and sometimes downright censurable. Sure priests, he suggests, so en deavor to adapt to the poli tical, economic and trade union thinking of the working class that they are led to take an active part in the struggle to bring about a Marxist social Lay Theologians LONDON (NC)~A three-year course on theology for laymen has opened here In Westmins ter Cathedral. About 400 people attended the first lecture given by Father Martin D'Arcy, S.J, .order. THE statement made public by the "recalcitrant” priests is one that the group had sent to the Fathers of the ecumeni cal council last July. The priests involved had all refused to obey the 1954 directives of the hierarchy that they give up their life among the workers. Since then they have slipped into the anonomity of life in working class districts, and have worked for from 10 to 17 years in physical labor—in such jobs as factory workers, elec tricians, masons and hod- I ANSWER TO LAST WEEK'S PUZZLE nnnn nun nnn nnn nnnnr nnnnnn carriers. They told the council Fathers: ‘THE Church is an econo mic, political and cultural power that is comfortable un der capitalism. It has good relations with the capitalistic countries and even fascist ones, and its leaders go along with being treated as among the important people of the world. How could it not defend a social system which has sup ported it and accorded it such a good position?” But it is this very social system, the priests hold, which has oppressed and enslaved the workers. They add; "For us it seems impossi ble to hope that the working class could hear the message of Jesus Christ as long as the Church, by its resources, its organizations, the style of life of the faithful, remains in fact a worldly power. The working world must either fight this power, or else temporarily make use of it—but not in or der to spread the Gospel.” lvo4 l>fc.UKUIA BULLETIN PAGE 7 10* 3527 WoAsiJ. pLlVU.f He UU» >1 bl At 10.
