Holy Spirit
Zoning
The following was sent to us
by Rev. James A, Budd, Pastor
of St. John Methodist Church,
Mt, Parran Road, N.W., At
lanta, in relation to the zoning
hearing on land to be used for
the new Holy Spirit Parish of the
Archdiocese of iAtUnta: til
"This is the statement which
appeared in our Newsletter last
week:
“We regret that some peo
ple have received the erroneous
impression that St. John Metho
dist Church is objecting to the
erection of Holy Spirit Catho
lic Church on Jett Rd, due to
the fact that a zoning meeting
was held in our Fellowship Hall,
This auditorium has been used
for all sorts of community
meetings, and it is not at all
unusual for it to be used by
both sides in a zoning cam
paign. We want it clearly un
derstood that when a meeting
is held in our building, it does
not mean that it is sponsored
by the church nor endorsed by
its membership.’’

Lutheran Choir Aids Catholics
MILWAUKEE (RNS) — A
second joint hymn-sing by Ro
man Catholics and Lutherans
has been scheduled for Nov. 22
at a Lutheran church here un
der the sponsorship of stu
dent groups of the two Churches
at the University of Wisconsis-
Milwaukee.
The event will follow a Nov.l
program in which members of
a Lutheran church accepted the
invitation of a priest to help in
coaching Catholic parishioners
in the singing of hymns.
WHILE the unique venture
in ecumenism wa s hailed by
clergy and members of the
churches involved, there also
was some criticism of Lu
therans joining Catholic in song.
The Rev. Paul G. Eckert,
a clergyman of the conserva
tive Wisconsin Evangelical Lu
theran Synod, objected to the
practice in his congregational
church bulletin.
He said that while the Catho
lic Church may be “practic
ing better public relations" it
has not abondoned the “false
teaching" which caused the
Protestant Reformation.
THE first joint hymn-sing
took place at Holy Ghost Catho
lic church, with members of
Ascension Lutheran church, a
congregation of the American
Lutheran Church, participating.
The Nov. 22 ecumenical song-
fest was scheduled for Lake
Park Lutheran church, a Lu
theran Church in America con
gregation , under the sponsor-
shi p of the University of
Wisconsin- Milwaukee's Lu
theran student center and the
Newman club, which operates
a campus center for Catholics.
FATHER RaymondH. Kriege,
chaplain of the Newman club,
said that Catholic students had
sung hymns almost daily of late
but he added:
"So often we drag the hymns.
Or we pitch them too high for
the male singers. We hope that
some lessons from the Lu
therans might help.”
ANOTHER will be a 14th Cen
tury German melody set to a
medieval Latin carol. It be
gins: “Good Christian men, re
joice, With heart and voice. . ."
some lessons from the Lu
therans might help."
J. William McNulty, music
director of Lake Park church
will direct the singing, explain
ing the music as needed.
AMONG the hymns sung will
be pre-Reformation selections
which, it was explained, are
equally appropriate for Catho
lics and Lutherans.
One will be an old Latin
hymn with a Hebrew plainsong
melody, a form of chant that
predated Christianity. It is an
Advent hymn that begins with
the lines: “O come, O come,
Immanuel, Andranson captive
ISRAEL..."
Father Kriege also has asked
his Lutheran hosts to lead in
singing Martin Luther’s Re
formation hymn, “A Mighty
Fortress."
