NKW OFFIC'KRS of the Canon Law Society of America, elected at the recent meeting of the society in San Francisco, are: (left to right) Father Peter Shannon, Chicago, re cording secretary: Dr. Stephan Kuttner, who occupies the newly established Chair of Roman Catholic Studies at Yale University, vice president; Father Paul Boyle, C.P., Louisville, Ky., president; and Msgr. Clement Bastnagel, dean of the Catholic University of America school of canon law, Washington, D. C., re-elected general secretary and treasurer. AT NCCW CONVENTION Bishop Declares Emerging Laity Is ‘Out Of Cocoon’ WASHINGTON (NC)— The emerging layman is well out of his cocoon, 150 priest-mo derators of women's groups agreed at the National Coun cil of Catholic Women con vention here. During the moderators* session, Auxiliary Bishop Ste phen Leven of San Antonio, Tex,, gave a preview of the yet-to-be published Vatican Council decree on the laity. THE council has done more than anyone hoped for, said Bishop Leven, assistantepsi- copal chairman of the Depart ment of Lay Organizations, National Catholic Welfare Conference. Bishop Leven said the coun cil has broken with the old custom of defining a priest in terms of what he can do, and a layman in terms ofwhat he can*t do. Catholic Action, defined as the participation of the laity in the apostolate of the hier archy, was too limited to con cept of the work of the lay man, he said, because while it affirmed the need of obed ience, it neglected the char- sim or gift of free grace which the Holy Spirit gives to lay Christians, The Church must find a way to discern charis matic graces, which the "siege mentality" of a defen sive Church has often extin guished in Christians during the past 400 years, Bis hop Leven said. THE pope needs "curia machinery" but it is possible, he predicted, that the Col lege of Cardinals might some day be replaced by a kind of the nations of the world. The American Church is especi ally prone to idolize canoni cal structures such as the im primatur (approval to publish a book) and the Index of for bidden books, Bishop Leven said. Some canonists have closed the Church to some persons, he said, and squeezed others so hard as to force them out of it. The positive attention which the council’s schema on the Church gives to the layman is directed towards a new free dom of the sons of God as brothers of Christ, Bishop Le ven said. The layman has a duty at times to make known Peachtree Road Pharmacy PICK UP AND DELIVERY SERVICE! CALL CE 7-6466 4062 Peachtree Rd. Atlanta his opinions to his bishop for the welfare of the Church. The communication should be made with honesty, courage, prudence and charity, he ad ded. Those who question the wis dom of the council's statement on the laity and argue "Why break up a winning team?" should know what is being lost, Bishop Leven said. "No one can be a good priest without following the council," he declared. ’ We are in for the greatest development in Church you can imagine." MSGR. Carroll T. Dozier, moderator of the Richmond, Va„ Diocesan Council of Cath olic Women, said moderators are too inclined to talk about needs they think their bishops want to discuss instead of in forming them of the real needs of parish or diocesan organi zations, He urged the mode rators to "turn the women loose" with motivation from the new theology of the laity. The monsignor stated that "emerging laymen articles" that have appeared in perio dicals "have come from with out Catholic federated organi zations," He told the priests to rethink the role o f mode rator on every level and "step back from the role of organi zation director" that has made the men’s and women's organizations * 'subject! to us." Father Frederick E. O’ Hearn, moderator of the Yak- St. Jude’s Groups Meet The first parent-teacher con ference of the 1964-65 school year was held Sunday, Novem ber 8 at St. Jude’s cafetorium. The Young Doctors A-3—Morally Unobjectionable for Adults lma, Wash,, diocesan council, drew a parallel between the .personal, warm relationships of a woman in her home and the kind of new personal relationships that the pre sent day calls for in the Church •at every level, especially in the pastor-parishioner rela tionship. A questionnaire which he circulated, Father O’Heam said, showed that most Cath olic women attend parish- meetings irregularly, get little out ot them and come way with the feeling that they are not really wanted. "If only our pastor would talk to us," he said sums up the feeling of many women. THE "business community atmosphere" has come into the parish, he said, to perpe tuate an "impersonal, debili tating, secure structure." The frequent passivity in the fath er’s role in the modern home was related to a seminary in culcated attitude in priests that makes them put too much emphasis on the virtues of docility and obedience in the members of parish organizat ions. Personal relationships and real charity are needed, Father O'Hearn said. One moderator raised the question whether the whole concept of parish organization structure was not out of date in the light of Bishop Le- ven's talk on the council's constitution on the Church, The bishop replied that a family concept of the parish must begin to grow. The same applies to the diocese, he said, and also in the rela tionship of the individual Chri stian with God. Bishops in Rome are saying to one another, Bishop Leven said, "Don't you know there's been a council?" Pastors should not be allowed to avoid needed changes simply be cause they do not have a "me thod of dialogue" with their people, he added.- St. Joseph Ace Tops. THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 19, 1964 GEORGIA BULLETIN PAGE ? Deplores Bickering In Church CARDIFF, Wales (NC) - A warning that the strong loyal ty of lay Catholics to their Church in this country may be undermined by bickering be tween priests and people has been issued by Archbishop John Murphy of Cardiff. In an appeal for understand ing read from all pulpits in the archdiocese, the prelate, coun selled: "BOTH bishop and priest Stamps To Mark Congress VATICAN CrTY (RNS) — A new series of postage stamps commemorating Pope Paul Vi's participation in the forthcoming 38th International Eucharistic Congress at Bombay, India, will be issued by the Vatican post office on Dec, 2. The series will be in four de nominations, They will portray the Pope genuflecting; the al tar erected in Bombay's large oval square; the Gateway of In dia as seen from the sea; and the Pope standing with out stretched arms in greeting, with a map of Asia serving as a background. Should be continually remind ing themselves that although their authority as representing Christ demands a reverence and an obedience from the laity, it is not a servile but a filial obedience. The laity are no longer children in the Faith. We have an educated laity who, in the actual situation in which they find themselves, often add valuable and helpful criticism concerning the presentation of the Faith," Then he added: "Unfortunate ly, at times, men who arc ut terly scDupulous in their own sfciences allow themselves to become emotionally involved in medicinal and theological the ories to a degree which is ut terly ludicrous." ANSWER TO LAST WEEkJ'S PUZZLE n nnnn nn nnnnn n iuhhI r noon nnnn ARCHBISHOP Murphy said Catholic doctrine is full of del icate complexities and that "heresies are made by fools who wish to simplify them." He concluded with the plea that "by the will of God there is a distinction between the priesthood of the clergy and that of the laity, but please God not a distance. The laity with the pirests are the Church." ICS Holy Name Honors Youth "Find your place in the World", was the speaker's topic at the recent Shrine of the Im maculate Conception Holy Name meeting.
