SPOTLIGHT ON SOCIAL REFORM
Ready, Aim, Fire!!
'tv
WILLIAM J. SMITH, S.J.
There’s an organization out Westj with head
quarters somewhere in Missouri, that is “far
right” and "far out,” It is called the Minute-
men, Very patriotic. Very anti-Communist and
very “conservative,” They are also afflicted
with a social and psychological neurosis that could
be contagious.
What they se< on the horizon that has escaped
the notice of the rest of the nation is hard to dis
cern, But they at least intend to be prepared for
the last death struggle against the Communist con
spiracy and invasion. The
Minutemen will come armed for
the fray—rifles, shotguns, pis
tols, whatever “survival”wea
pons are needed — they will
have them. The applicant for
membership in this “school of
advanced patriotism" chooses
his own weapons and brings
them with him to the drill field.
I They claim a membership run
ning into the thousands. '
WHEN ELWOOD B. Dowd, in the play “Harvey”
saw the six-foot rabbit as he draped himself
around a lamp-post at three in the morning, the
symbol of his illusions was a peaceful and playful
companion. What the Minutemen see as they con
jure up the grim picture of an America that has
lost its spirit of resistance to the Communist
menace is not recorded. But it must be an hor
rendous phantasm which works upon their over
wrought imaginations while they go through their
military antics on some backwoods drill grounds
deep in the heart of the midlands of Missouri.
What has happened, according to the seers of
the Minuteman mythology, is that America has
lost its last fond hope of survival as a nation.
YOU PERHAPS did not recognize that final day
of destiny. But if you pulled down the lever in the
voting booth marked for Lyndon Baines Johnson on
November 3rd, you were an accomplice in the
dread betrayal. The last hope of the world faded
into oblivion as the computers and their human co
agents flashed the news to the nation that Barry
Goldwater was getting the licking of his life. ‘The
hopes of millions that the Communist tide could be
stopped with ballots instead of bullets have been
turned into dust,” announced the November issue
of "On Target,” the Minutemen’s patriotic bulle
tin. ”1 hope the readers of this newsletter are not
naive,” warned the editor. “We are not going to
have a free election in 1968.”
From now on — the issue must be decided by

PHILADELPHIA (NC) — A
Georgia bishop told the congre
gation at a Marian ceremony
here that popular devotions,
such as the Miraculous Medal
Novema, will not be suppressed
due to liturgical changes.
Bishop Thomas J, McDonough
of Savannah spoke (Nov. 27)
at Mary’s Central Shrine dur
ing observance of the 134th an
niversary of the apparition of
Mary to St. Catherine Laboure
at the Daughters of Charity con
vent at Rue du Bac in Paris,
THE PRELATE said that with
promulgation by Pope Paul VI
and the Second Vatican Council
of the Constitution on the Sac
red Liturgy, many Catholics
concluded popular devotions
were to be discontinued. He
said this is “erroneous.”
‘Thanks be to God, no such
untoward action is contemplat
ed,” he said.
“Unquestionably, the devo
tion of Our Lady of the Miracu
lous Medal harmonizes with the

bullets, not ballots. ( I hope MM headquarters
have notified Secretary McNamara of their plans.
We could save a great deal of money on the next
military budget. Why waste millions on missiles
while the boys from Missouri and elsewhere are
already alerting the nation to the need of rifles
and shotguns?)
SHOULD THIS comedy of anti-Communist pan-
tomine be taken seriously? Only to the extent of the
Government putting a stop to it. I presume the FBI
has the membership all catalogued and the names
properly filed. But, according to report, they run
into the thousands.
One of the characteristics of the rabid anti-
Communist rabble rouser is to set a more or less
specific period of time when the “great invasion”
and the final act of infiltration is to be success
fully accomplished. To be specific makes the
prophecy so much more graphic and conditions the
fear complex of the audience to a much more sen
sitive response — when the collection basket
comes around.
The Minutemen’s time schedule calls for the de
nouement to take place before 1968. This is the
shortest time lapse for the conquest by the Com
mies that I have come across. It might be well for
Government authorities to keep an eye on the
movement lest they mistake April Fool’s Day 1966
or 1967 as “DerTag” and start shooting some
where.
THE ORGANIZATION is only four years old. It
has not been the first of its kind. Twenty years
ago, during the Christian Front and anti-Semitic
days in Brooklyn, about twenty young zealots were
indicted and brought to trial for a similar sort of
venture. The home-made militia hadbeen engag
ed in drilling for the day of destiny. Some of
them had been charged with stealing ammunition
and some sort of equipment from local armories.
The fantastic venture was nipped in the bud.
'They've got the Junior Holy Name on trial,”
remarked a court attendant to me as I dropped into
the courtroom to see what was going on. The im
plication may have been true, but it is just that
danger of emotionally aroused, biased youngsters
getting involved which puts the edge on movements
of this kind.
There is little likelihood of the Minutemen blow
ing up the White House, but fanaticism and fire
arms hardly blend into a healthy social condition.
Perhaps an official investigation and full exposure
of what actually is going on in their ranks would
be the quickest way to dampen the ardor of their
delusions.

norms and laws of the Church...
these prayers and petitions di
rected to God, through His Im
maculate Mother, provide for a
fuller participation in the lit
urgical life of the Church,” he
said.
With the updating of the
Church by the council, Bishop
McDonough said, “much em
phasis, and justifiably so, has
been put upon the Sacred Lit
urgy with particular reference
to the Sacrifice of the Mass
(and) ... the implementation of
the vernacular in the Mass is
for the sole purpose of bringing
you and me closer to Calvary.”
“WITH THE promulgation of
the Constitution on the Sacred
Liturgy, which highlighted the
Mass”, the bishop stated, “it
was concluded by some, al
though erroneously, that other
devotions were to be discour
aged or discontinued. The reci
tation of the Rosary, the Sta
tions of the Cross, May and
October devotions and special
novenas, among others have
been mentioned,
“MANY DEVOTEES of Our
Lady of the Miraculous Medal
have asked: ‘Is the novena to
be suppressed?'
Thanks be to God, no such
juntoward action is contemplat-
ed. Devotion to Mary must be
sustained and increased. She is
our most powerful Intercessor
before the throne of God.
'The Constitution on the Sac
red Liturgy mentions specifi
cally the retention of popular
devotions which are in accord
with the laws and norms of the
Church. In fact, it states that
such devotions ‘are to be high
ly commended,' ” he said.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (NC)~
The Navy will have a ship next
July named after the only chap
lain awarded the Congressional
Medal of Honor.
Mayor Edward Crane said he
has been notified by Navy Sec
retary Paul Nitze that an es
cort destroyer to be launched
at Bay City, Mich., will be
named for the late Father Jo
seph T, O’Callahan, S.J., who
served with heroism aboard
the aircraft carrier Franklin.
The carrier was hit by Japa
nese suicide bombers off Kobe,
Japan, March 19, 1945, causing
832 deaths and 200 wounded,
FATHER O’Callahan, a na
tive of Boston who attended
..Cambridge schools, was Ate,
first Jesuit to enter active duty
in World War II, He saw ac
tion in the African and Nor
mandy campaigns and joined the
crew of the carrier Franklin 17
days before it was smashed by
Japanese bombers.
Father O'Callahan received
the nation’s highest reward for
heroism from President Harry
S. Truman in January, 1946. He
was cited for leading fire-fight
ing crews on the blazing deck of
the Franklin and for assisting
the dead and dying.
THE priest manned a fire
hose and directed the jettison
ing of live ammunition and
flooding of the magazine. Ac
cording to the citation given
him, he “inspired the gallant
officers and men to fight hero
ically and with profound faith
in the face of almost certain
death and to return their strick
en ship to port.”
