"Atlanta has had its share of
honors— national and inter
national — for the men and wo
men who have achieved great
ness in their special fields. We
have not waited until histor
ians enshrined them— we have
honored them in a civic man
ner while they were still among
us. This is the Christian way,
the American way.

His name is linked with a very
religious concept, — justice
through non-violence. All of us
who believe in this, whether
Protestant, Catholic, Jewish or
humanist, share in the honor
which comes, through Dr. King,
to our city. A civic dinner to
reflect that honor would seem
to be the civilized way to Ob
serve this new distinction for
Atlanta."
