Hits Bad
Books,
Movies
CINCINNATI (NC) — A uni
versity professor claimed here
that bad books and movies aren't
just the dirty ones.
Dr. Edward A. Fischer, com
munication arts professor at the
University of Notre Dame, also
is an author and film producer,
said the ones that are bad ar
tistically are "immoral’’ be
cause they "drain man’s hu
manity,"
"THE good communicator
helps uplift mankind and there
fore has a share in the redemp
tion. The bad communicator
treats man-as something less
than he is,” Fischer told an
all-day workshop (Dec. 30) at
Mount Notre Dame for Sisters
of Notre Dame de Namur.
In an interview he said too
many people think only of the
Sixth Commandment and sex
ual morality when they consid
er the problem of communica
tions. They fail to consider the
question of how well the ideas
are communicated, he added.
This approach to the problem,
of bad books and films "has
got. us nowhere,” he declared.
"We’d better start going about
it the hard way—-that is, by
teaching about art,” he added.

THE FORMAT devised by Mr.
Leo, in writing the series, pro
vided a program on Church his
tory' in family planning and mar
riage, two programs in which
actors read the statements on
birth control by Popes, cardi
nals, theologians and Catholic
laymen — presenting both lib
eral and conservative views and
quotations from Vatican Council
debates — and the panel discus
sion.
Tapes of the programs will be
run off for some U.S. bishops,
it was said, in an effort to de
termine whether the permis
sion of the hierarchy can be
obtained. Mr. Work was hope
ful that the series could be
shown in May.
Father Gregory Baum, O.S.A.,
of the theological faculty of St.
Michael’s College, University
of Toronto, appears in the panel
discussion which concludes the
Series. With him are Mr.
Scharper and Professor Louis
Dupre, philosopher and lay the
ologian who is author of the
book, Contraception and Catho
lics.
A PRESS release, issued by
the National Council of Catholic
Men in December to announce
the series, said "few problems
in, modern times have caused
as much oi a stir in the Catho
lic Church as has the problem
of birth control." It noted that
"while the official teaching of
the Church has not changed on
this matter, this position is be
ing very carefully re-examin
ed."
Purpose of the TV series, it
added, "is to provide a back
ground on the theology of mar
riage and to report, rather than
argue, the position of contem
porary theologians,”
