Life Of
Men
JOVRML QE A SOVL = POPE JOHN XXJU
Continual, Wearisome
Pilgrimage
(Last in a series of 18 articles excerpted from the
forthcoming book, “Journal of a Soul”, inner
most thoughts of the late Pope John XXIII. Here,
in a Devout Consideration, the Pope wrote of The
Way of the Cross, The Death of Jesus and the
Resurrection.)
THE LIFE OF MEN is a pilgrimage, continual,
long and wearisome. Up and up along the steep
and stony road, the road marked out for all upon
that Hill, In this mystery Jesus represents the
whole race of man. Everyone of us must have
his own cross to bear; otherwise, tempted by
selfishness or cruelty, we should sooner or later
fall by the roadside.
From the contemplation of Jesus climbing up to
Calvary we learn, first with our hearts and then
with our minds, to embrace and kiss the Cross,
and bear it bravely and with joy, as we read in
The Imitation of Christ: ‘In the Cross is our sal
vation, in the Cross is our life, in the Cross is
our defence against our foes, and our heavenly
sweetness,’
And how can we fail to include Mary in our
prayers, Mary who followed Jesus sorrowing,
sharing so intimately in His merits and His
sufferings.
THE MYSTE RY should set before our eyes a vast
vision of poor suffering souls: orphans, old peo
ple, the sick, the weak, prisoners and exiles. We
pray for strength for all these, and the consola
tion which alone brings hope. We repeat with
emotion and, we must admit, with secret tears,
‘Hail, O Cross, our only hope.’
THE DEATH OF JESUS
...in strange, and awful strife
Met together death and life.’
(Roman Missal, sequence from the Easter Mass.)
Life and death are the two significant and de
cisive elements of Christ’s sacrifice. From His
smile at Bethlehem, the same smile which lights
up the faces of all the children of men when first
they appear on earth, to His last gasp and sob on
the Cross, which gathered all our sufferings into
one to hallow them, arid wiped away all our sins
by atoning for them, we have seen how Christ
lived in this our earthly life. And Mary is still
there, beside the Cross, as She was beside the
Babe at Bethlehem.
Let us pray to Her, this Mother, pray to Her so
that She too may pray for us ‘now and in the hour
of our death’.
In this mystery we might see foreshadowed the
mystery of those who — what sadness in this
thought 1 — will never know anything about the
blood that was poured out for them too by the Son
of God; and above all the mystery of obstinate
sinners, of unbelievers, of those who have receiv
ed, still do receive and then refuse, the light of
the Gospel I
With this thought our prayer expands in a vast
longing, in a sigh of heartfelt reparation, the
longing to reach to the ends of the earth with our
apostolate; and we earnestly pray that the prec
ious blood, poured out for all mankind, may at
long last bring to all, to all men everywhere, sal
vation and conversion, that the blood of Christ may
be to all the pledge and promise of Eternal life.
THE RESURRECTION OF OUR LORD
This is the mystery of death challenged and
defeated. The Resurrection marks the greatest
victory of Christ, and likewise the assurance of
victory for the Holy Catholic Church, beyond all
the adversities and persecutions of past yester
days and tomorrow’s future, ‘Christ conquers,
reigns and rules.’ We do well to remember that
the first appearance of the risen Christ was to the
pious women, familiar to Him during His humble
life, who had accompanied him in His sufferings
as far as Calvary, and stayed with Him there.
In the splendour of this mystery we see with the
eyes of faith, as living and united with the risen
Jesus, the souls who were most dear to us, the
souls of those who lived with us and whose suffer
ings we shared. How vividly the memory of our
dead rises in our hearts in the light of the Resur
rection, of Christ! We remember and pray for
them in the very sacrifice of our crucified and
risen Lord, and they still share the best part of
our life, which is prayer and Jesus.

WASHINGTON (NC) -- Easy
abortion and other family limi
tation programs in Japan have
created more problems than
they have solved, a theologian
andi a Japanese economist
agreed here.
These practices have under
mined the physical and mental
health of women, weakened fam
ily life, sapped national morale,
and created economic problems
which may become acute in the
years ahead, they declared.
Expressing these views in an
interview were Father Anthony
Zimmerman, S. V. D„ of the
theology department at Nanzan
University, and Shiden Inoue,
head of the university’s econo
mics department.
Father Zimmerman, a native
of Westphalia, Iowa, and author
of the book, “Catholic View
point on Overpopulation,’’ is on
his way to Belgrade, Yugos
lavia, for the United Nations
World Population Conference,
Aug. 30-Sept., 10. He will speak
at the conference, ,,, ...
The Divine Word missionary
said Japan’s experience with a
liberalized abortion law “is
definitely not a happy one.”
Last year one group collected
1.8 million signatures on a peti
tion condemning abortion and
asking for a change in the law.
An organization known as the
Movement to Treat Life Res
pectfully, which includes Chris
tians, Buddhists, Shintoists'
and others, is leading the fight
against abortion.
Under a law of 1948 induced
abortion is permitted in Japan
at the discretion of a “des
ignated physician” who judges
thf t a woman’s health would be
"affected seriously" by con
tinued pregnancy "from the
physical or economic view
point.”

There are about a million
registered abortions each year
in Japan, but the real number
is probably far higher (among
other reasons, doctors con
ceal having performed such
operations to avoid paying in
come tax on their fees). Pro
fessor Inoue estimated that the
total abortions are at least 2.3
million annually and perhaps
substantially higher.
In a study which he prepared
earlier this year the Japanese
economist called abortion "a
menace to the continued exis-;
tence of the human race and to
the Japanese nation.”
Although maternal health is
put forward as an argument
for abortion, he noted, one study
by authorities of the Nagano
Prefecture showed that 48% of
women who had undergone abor
tions felt their health was dam
aged. A survey by the Japan
Public Health Department found
47% saying their health was
damaged.

country with next highest rate,
Hungary, Noting the incidence
of neurotic guilt feelings among
women who have undergone
abortions, Inoue suggested that
there may be a “casual rela
tionship” between the two
things.
Father Zimmerman said abor
tion is “demoralizing family
life” in Japan. The two-
child family is the social and
economic norm, and parents
with more than two children
are made to feel like social
misfits.
Abortion is not a once-only
thing for Japanese women, the
priest said. Instead, they have
repeated abortions. However,
he added, it is common for doc
tors to sterilize women after
they have had four abortions.

matters now stand Japanese are
failing to multiply fast enough
to replace themselves. The
current national replacement
rate is 89%.
“One might compare Japan to
a business enterprise which is
not making up for depreciation
losses,” Inoue said. "Itkeeps
entering profits on its books
made by selling stock accumu
lated in the past. When the sup
ply of stock is exhausted, how
ever, a crash is imminent.’’
Father Zimmerman said Ja
panese business and industry
are already experiencing a
shortage of young high school
and college graduates. When
the full effects of the population
limitation program begin to
show up in a declining number
of available young workers in
the next seven years or so, the
resulting “dislocation” of the
economy will create pressure
for a “change in policy,” he
predicted.
Weddings Down
BONN, Germany (NC)—A So
viet newspaper reported that
only one per cent of marriages
in the city of Leningard take
place in church.
Leningradskaja Pravda attri
buted the low percentage of
church weddings to the success
of the so-called marriage pa
laces erected by the govern
ment.
THE ST. LOUIS OLD CATHEDRAL, symbol of the city’s religious heritage, is embraced
by the giant Gateway Arch being erected to reflect the area’s material expansion. Still
under construction, Gateway Arch has passed 562 feet in height, making it “the largest
man-made memorial in the United States.” The old record belonged to the 555-foot Wash
ington Monument in Washington, D.C. The Old Cathedral stands on one block of land in
St. Louis that has never changed hands.

MIAMI (NC)—There will be
no problems finding qualified
laymen to serve as married
deacons, a Latin American pre-
alte said here.
"In Puerto Rico,” said
Bishop Alfred Mendez, C.S.C.,
of Arecibo, P.R., “there are
some 500 ex-seminarians on the
island If we took only the 100
who studied philosophy or the
50 who reached theology, we
would have a nucleus of highly
trained married men, 30 of
whom could easily be found to
become married deacons.”
America’s priest shortage, will
establish a pilot project to train
married deacons in his diocese
at the end of the coming ses
sion of the Vatican council.
Bishop Mendez is also found
er and director of the Society
of St. Stephen, organized to fuh-
nish know-how and funds to
bishops for local training pro
grams of married deacons.
He emphasized the need for
“a crash program, not alenghy
two-to-five-year course as en
visioned by some.”
THREE months’ training
would be enough, he said, to
train married men to give Com
munion, to baptize, to perform
marriage, to assist the dying
and to bury the dead,
“Such deacons could be call
ed Deacons of the Sacraments,
or perhaps subdeacons” he
said. They could be especially
helpful in “the back hills areas”
where priests can visit only
rarely, he pointed out.
“From the Deacons of the
Sacraments could later be
chosen Deacons of the Word,
full deacons, who would do the
preaching.’ These, he said,
would require more training,
“but even here short memoriz
ed sermons, for a beginning,
could be used by the first or
sacramental deacons, Thus the
sacramental deacons would be
conduits of grace, and the Dea
cons of the Word, conduits of
truth."
