“The representatives of the
sacral order have, sometimes^
come close to claiming they
were the church,'* he said, "In
other times and circumstances,
the secular order has come
close to degrading the hierarchy
to the staths of spiritual flunkies
to secular chieftains. Both these
tendencies are equally fatal to
the true health and well being of
the church.”
Dr. Outler said in closing, "K
the Vatican's doctrine of the
laity ever comes to be used by
over zealous laymen to muzzle
and tame your priests in their
prophetic criticism of the
standing order or, alternative
ly, if it should encourage the no
tion that you have some right
ful power over your priests and
bishops because of your hands
on the purse strings, then you
will have tattered the whole
splendid vision of the People of
God and will have tragically
failed the church in your
greatest hours of opportunity
and challenge."
In his introduction, Archbis
hop Paul J. Hallinan called Dr.
Outler an. "ecumenist in the
finest sense of the word...honest
and gracious.” The archbishop
said the Methodist theologian
"contributed so much, (at the
council) and received so much.”

BERN, Switzerland (NC)—An
unofficial, predominantly Pro

led by Reto Caratsch, prominent
Swiss journalist, has recom

religion.
These clauses include one that
bans the Jesuits from Switzer
land, another that regulates the

that govemjewish dietary laws.
TOWNSVILLE, Australia
(RNS)—The real heroes of life
are the chaste, an Anglican
bishop told a congregation in St.
James Cathedral here.
Dr. Ian Shevill, Bishop of
North Queensland, said "auto

have largely banished the old
fears of illicit sex relationship

What is needed now, he said,
is for all Christians to "af
firm that chastity is worth

Fr. Murray To Head
LaFarge Institute
NEW YORK (RNS) — Father
John Courtney Murray, S.J.,
of Woodstock s (Md.) College,
a foremost Catholic theologian
and specialist in interreligious
relations, was named director
of the John LaFarge Institute
here.
Founded in 1964 and affiliat
ed with America, national Ca
tholic weekly, the institute con
tinues the work of the late Fa
ther John LaFarge, pioneer in
Catholic interracial and inter
religious affairs and editor of
America for some 35 years.
Father Murray succeeds Fa
ther Walter M. Abbott, S.J., the
institute’s director since itwas
started, who becomes North
American director of the Va
tican Radio in Rome beginning
in September.
A theology professor at
Woodstock for nearly 30 years,
Father Murray was chief archi
tect of the Vatican Council’s
Declaration on Religious Li
berty, consultant to the Secre
tariat for'Promoting Christian
Unity and a Council peritus
(expert).
He is a former associate edi
tor of America, to which the
contributes regularly, and au
thor of several books, includ
ing The Problem of Religious
Freedom, published last year.
An institute announcement
said his appointment as direc
tor will give Father Murray
new opportunities to enlarge the
ecumenical dialogue which he
considers necessary among in
formed and responsible men of
all beliefs.
The institute also noted that
primary areas of the Jesuit’s
work have been questions of
church - state relations and
freedom of worship.
Father Murray will continue
at Woodstock, where for 25
years he has edited Theologi
cal Studies, a scholarly pub
lication for Catholic and other
theologians. He will divide his
time between the college and in
stitute headquarters.

IN INDIA
THE HOLY FATHER’S MISSION AID TO THE ORIENTAL CHURCH
HOW
TO
KEEP
COOL
THIS
SUMMER
Here’s a way to beat the heat this summer.
Think of India. . . . Reports Grail member Eliza
beth Reid: “The heat is an incredible 114 de
grees. Men in ragged, dusty loin cloths are
crowding into the city to get near some source
of water. They walk in slow motion, or they're
stretched out in the thin shade with arms and
legs widespread. There’s hardly any life left in
them." . . . Think of the penniless Franciscan
nuns in Marakanthara. Air conditioning? Two
walls of their chapel have collapsed, still they
keep to their prayers. Only $1,800 will rebuild a
decent place for God.... Think of the homeless,
helpless unemployed now streaming into Cochin
in Kerala State. Many are Catholics and they
have Mass in a shed, but they’ll build a real
church for themselves labor-free (in your loved
ones’ memory, named for your favorite saint)
if you can supply the materials ($3,700). . . .
Find it hard to sleep on hot nights? Sixteen ex
hausted Sacred Heart Sisters sleep on the floor
in one cramped room in Anikad because people
needed their bedroom as a chapel. A perma
nent chapel (a memorial to last) will cost only
$2,450, and the nuns will pray for you.always.
. . . Any gift for sweltering, hungry India ($500,
$200, $100, $75, $50, $25, $15, $10, $5,
$2) will make you feel better (and cooler) this
summer. Please send what you can.
LOVE Married late in life, Mr. and Mrs. L. K. were
DOESN'T 1 given a son they named Paul for their favorite
DIE saint. Right away, they began to set aside a
fund for Paul’s college education, but when he
was eight years old, the lad was killed by an
auto. The K’s then used the college fund to train
native priests in the Near East (only $100 per
year each). One priest, an orphan, chose the
name "Paul”—-for his favorite parents.
