A leader
again steps forward.
Ellis Arnall.
Ellis Arnall served this Georgia of ours
once before. Served with dignity and
integrity. Helping usher in a bright new
day for our State. For Ellis Arnall removed
trade barricades. And industry flooded
in with jobs and prosperity for all
Georgians. Badly needed legislation
became reality. The State government
was modernized. The colleges were saved.
The State debt was paid for the first
time in history, without raising taxes.
Ellis Arnall left office a hear legend.
People said that here was a man twenty
years ahead of his time. Now the times and
the man have met. For the times again
call for Ellis Arnall to serve the people
of Georgia.

Letters To The Editor
Fish Or Fowl-Continued
EDITOR:
In regard to the matter bf
fish or fowl, we would like
to see the present laws chan
ged.
Friday always presents a
problem in our house with our
children all now able to eat
meat, several not liking any
fish, one with an allergy to egg,
I usually find myself fixing a
menu of three different meals
every Friday.
I realize that thesee are per
sonal considerations, but still
I feel that the keeping of the
Friday abstinence, at least on
our part, is strictly the keep
ing of the law, as such. Thus
it does not deserve much me
rit, especially when done with
much dissatisfaction.
I prefer a spirit of doing
something for love of God or
neighbor, rather than a nega
tive approach of do not do this
or that in matters which do not
involve any insult or injury to
God or neighbor.
MR. MRS. ROGER LA VIGNE
DECATUR
EDITOR:
Fish or fowl on Friday? The
mere fact that it is up for dis-i
cussion takes away the pene-’
tential value.
I have felt for a long time
that along with all other chan
ges being made, there must be
some other means of penance.
I am in favor of fish on Friday
during lent, but otherwise feel
it has lost its cause, especial
ly in the south were Catholics
are in the minority and some
times find it very difficult when
traveling or attending meetings
where other foods are served.

EDITOR:
With regard to your request
for comment on the “Fish
or Fowl” question, I truly be
lieve that the retaining of it
is ridiculous. The only people
affected by it are the ones
who do not like fish.
Personally I love any kind
of seafood. There are mem
bers of my family who ac
tually become ill at the though
of seafood, eggs, etc. Aside
from this point, is the fact
that there are so many excep
tions, reasons and excuses
which apply to the individual
dispensation from fasting that
the religious impact of the whole
idea is complerely lost.

EDITOR:
In reference to your ques
tion “Fish or Fowl?" I perso
nally think we should stick to
the rule of abstinence on Fri
day. We have relaxed so many
rules since the Council that I
am beginning to feel insecure.
Our Church has been unique
'because of its strict rules and
regulations. But, like a well
disciplined child with clear-
cut rules to live by (including
restrictions), we feel loved
and secure by having to make
sacrifices to God.
Human nature being what it
is, does not lead many people
to give up things on their own.
It may be forced grace we
are obtaining, but it is better
than no grace at all.
Personally I enjoy having an
obligation to live by and I have
accomplished a bit of obedience
as each Friday rolls around. Do
not deprive us of that privi
lege.

EDITOR:
We believe that fasting on
Fridays should be discontinued
except during Lent, similar to
the rules recently adopted in
Italy.
At the end of last year we.
were led to believe that this
rule would soon be put into
effect, and then read where it

was being left to discretion
of local bishops. This method
makes the rule meaningless and
causes continual confusion.
If the Catholic Church intends
to continue its universality,
major rules should not" vary
from diocese to diocese.

EDITOR:
The law of abstinence should
be maintained. But why Fri
days?
Persons or families should be
allowed any day of a week to
abstain, not necessarily the
same day every week except
Good Friday.
C.W. FLANAGAN
ROME,
EDITOR:
It is astonishing and dishear-
ening to me to read the res
ponses of Catholics printed in
the Sept. 1 issue of the GEORGIA
BULLETIN regarding the dis-
abandpnment of the laws for
fast and abstinence.
It seems that it is time we
Catholics stop to meditate on
the true purpose of the sacri
fice instead of how embarras
sing or how inconvenient it
might be for us at times. I am
sure that it was neither pleasant
nor convenient for Christ to suf
fer and to sacrifice his life for
us.
Faith is love and love is
strengthened through sacri
fice. In the world today where
hatred is so prevalent and sa
crifice is almost an unheard
of word, it is evident that love
must be strengthened. What bet
ter way to learn to love our
neighbor that by first stren-
thening our love for God through
a few days of fast and ab
stinence.
It is very rare that we really
do something for Christ, be
cause sacrifice is irksome and
difficult.
Sacrifice required by some
one other than ourselves (e.g.,
the Church) can be even more
difficult because many times it
is inconvenient to perform the
duty. Elut how much greater a
sacrifice this can be.
My plea is to the United Sta
tes bishops in hopes that they
will decide to renew the iaws
of fast arid abstinence and that
they wiljl Emphasize the reasons
behind the sacrifice to the Ca
tholics of the United States.

EDITOR: \
I believe abstinence on Fri-,
day and the lenten fast detract!
from the primary purpose of
religion—worship of God.
I grew up thinking that as long
as we kept all the rules wewould
get to heaven. Now I realize
that Jesus? really meant it when
he said that the greatest com
mandment Is to love. How can
we be Christians if we do not
love God ; and one another, in
spite of all the rules.?
