Emphasis Is Too Great
On ‘Churchly’ Issues
CINCINATTI (NC)—A Cath
olic ecumenist warned here that
too much emphasis by the
churches on purely ‘‘churchly'*
questions contributes to the
growing alienation of young
people from religion.
Father Gregory Baum,
O.S.A., of the Center for Ecu
menical Studies at St. Michael's
College, Toronto, said “young
people in all the churches, espe
cially at universities and
colleges, begin to be impatient
witK th% Churches^ evert the
ecumenically minded churches,
when these are mainly concern
ed with churchly questions."*
"As Christians our young
people want to be concerned
with life, a .1 regard it of
greatest importance for the
future of the ecumenical move
ment that the. churches involved
in dialogue and cooperation
show an ever growing concern
for problems that are problems
for other people too,'* he said.
Father • Baum spoke at the
opening session of the Metho
dist Church’s conference on
"Educating for Ecumenism.’*
While stressing recent pro
gress by Catholics in the area
of ecumenical concern, he said
it would be "idealistic to sup
pose that all Roman Catholics
have already assimilated the
new spirit.’’ #
In particular he cited recent
incidents which J he§ajtd„sijggegt,
that some .congregatipns iai}dj
individuals within the Vatican
are not as committed to ecu
menism as Vatican Council II
was.
"At the moment,*’ he said,
"the reluctance of the central
administration to acknowledge
the new situation effected by
the council creates the
imminent danger in the Catholic
Church that our young people
will lose their enthusiasm for
Christian life in the Church.

"The Christian Gospel has
stirred them up, they have be
come sensitive to the needs
of others and the problems of
human existence, they desire
to involve themselves in life,
in service, in the wider con
cerns of human society, and
as they experience the preoc
cupation of the Church with
rules, laws and rubrics, with
purely institutional questions,
they become disenchanted and
turn away to live out their
Jaith in,communion with people
i who sharp: the same deep con
cerns.”
Father Baum said the ques
tion has been raised "whether
the dialogue and cooperation
which characterizes the ecu
menical movement should not
be extended to include non-
Christians.”
"When Christians are among
themselves,*’ he said, "they
may be tempted to deal
exclusively with problems of the
past. . .The problems of the
modern world force the
churches to face the present.
It draws them out of the past
into the time of salvation, which
is now.”
The Rev. Dr. Norman L.
Trott, president ofWesleyThe-
ological Seminary in Washing
ton, D.C., spoke to the Metho
dist conference on the impli
cations of the Consultation on
Church Union, ,a unity move-
m ent among several large Prot
estant bodies.
He said there is "no guar
antee that COCU can be a
channel for the reformation or
renewal of the church in our
time. But it should be said
clearly that it is not the intent
of COCU to produce an amal
gamation of churches or a con
solidation of organizations. It
seeks a union that will have in
it elements of reformation.”
