ATHENS (RNS)—Press re
ports that Ecumenical Patri
arch Athenagoras will visit
Pope Paul VI in the near future
have created turmoil among
members of the Holy Synod of
the Orthodox Church inGreece.
Several bishops have made
public charges- that the Patrt-^
arch plans to "enslave” Or
thodoxy to Roman Catholicism.
Two of the points that caused
the most disturbance were
speculative reports that Patri
arch Athenagoras plans to con-
celebrate a Mass with the Pope
and the fact that he has not
formally consulted with other
Orthodox leaders on his plans
for the visit.
The Patriarch has not con
firmed the reports, although he
has s aid frequently that he hope s
to visit the Pope this year.
The Holy Synod voted unani
mously to send a letter to all

THE SOCIETY FOR THE PROPAGATION OF THE FAITH
the Greek Metropolitans, ask
ing for their views on the sub
ject. Several Orthodox church
men here have said that the re
marks made during sessions of
the Synod represent the individ
ual views of its members, not
official views of the Church.
.-Several bishops oppose the
anti-ecumenical and anti-
Athenagoras views which have
been expressed repeatedly by
Archbishop Chrysostomos of
Athens and All Greece and other
members of the Synod.
The daily Ethnos of Athens
commented that, before criti
cizing the latest ecumenical
gesture of Patriarch Athena
goras, the Church Of Greece
should await official announce
ment of his plans. In the past,
he has always consulted the
heads of all Orthodox Churches
before taking any step on major
issues of Orthodoxy, the paper
said. He had done so in connec
tion with Pan-Orthodox Coun
cils, on dialogue with nOn-Orth-
odox Churches and on his meet
ing with the Pope in Jerusalem.
“It is strange," Ethnos com
mented, “that the Church of
Greece is the only one among the
Orthodox Churches always tak
ing a negative stand toward
world inter-Christian confer
ences, in spite of the contrary
views of the preponderance of
Greek opinion."
The paper referred to the
isolation of Patriarch Athena
goras in the Turkish city of Is
tanbul as "a position" which
"is not merely difficult but
even tragic."
Serra Changes
Meeting Place
The Serra Club of Metropol
itan Atlanta, which has met in

the Shrine of the Immaculate
Conception.
President Lew Gordon Jr.
said the next meeting will be
Thursday (today) at 12:10 p.m.
at the Shrine. The meeting will
begin with Mass and a luncheon
will be held in the assembly,
room. He asked former Serra
members to attend the Mass.

"Closed within the four walls
of thd Phaenar (the Greek quar- '
ter of Istanbul), in the midst
of enemies who are watching
for an opportunity to diminish
and humiliate him, he tries,
though strictly followed; to keep
in touch with what is happening
throughout the world and thus be
save 1 thilf'Bulwark of
Orthodoxy," Ethnos said.
"And while, through his clear
sightedness and strength of will,
he manages to resist and to pro
pound Orthodoxy, there are
hierarchs of the only free Or
thodox Church (that of Greece)
in a free country, who not only
refuse to help him but even call
him a 'traitor to the Faith.’ ”
The paper hailed Patriarch
Athenagoras for "causing the
Eastern Orthodox Church to
play a significant role in the
unity of all churches."
At the Synod meeting, Arch
bishop Chrysostomos charged
the Ecumenical Patriarch with
"anti-Orthodox activities which
may end in a full enslaving of
Orthodoxy under the Pope."
Metropolitan Dionysios of
Trikkis said that “Patriarch
Athenagoras pursues the en
slaving of Orthodoxy to-Papism,
thus trampling under foot the
holy canons and scandalizing the
Orthodox people."
Metropolitan Dorotheos of
Kastoria said that "by his
philopapist activities (Patri
arch Athenagoras) deals a
deadly blow to Orthodoxy and
to our nation as well."
