Pope Paul Sets World Day
Of Pray er For Vocations
VATICAN CITY (NC) Pope
Paul VI has issued an exhor
tation to “the entire Church*'
to observe Sunday, April 9, as
World Day of Prayer for Vo
cations.
In a letter to the faithful,
the Pontiff said: “We ask all,
yes, all of you members of the
holy Church of God, to welcome
our invitation and to do at least
one thing: do what Christ Him
self commanded: 'Pray. . .the
Lord of the harvest that He
send forth laborers into the vine
yards *'
The Holy ’."'ather said that
while there are still vocations
in the Church in our century,
his heart still is not free from
anxiety. "There are too many
empty places in the framework
of the Services that the Church
has need of,*’ he observed.
The Pope said he wished
to reach the doorways of Chris
tian families and ask: "Do
you have any vocations among
your children?*’
He said he wished he could
ask every pastor, every spiri
tual teacher if they “are wat
chful to discover the signs of a
divine calling among the per
sons entrusted to your care?’*
Noting that the word “voca
tion*’ actually applies to all hu
manity “called to Christian sal
vation,’* he said it acquires its
full significance in the “doubly
special vocation,** where one
gives his life “to the one and
highest love, to the love of
God.*’
He said the Church cannot be
indifferent or negligent where
the matter of vocations is con
cerned, and recalled the ad
monition of the Second Vati
can Council to bishops in this
respect.
“Each vocation toward God’s
worship and toward service of
the Church deserves the most
lively attention on the part of
those who cultivate, or who
watch over, the gardenof
souls,*’ he declared.
Vocations are the hope of the
Church, the Holy Father said.
“The Church, such as Christ
wanted it to be, does not live
without ministers,*' he remind
ed. "Evangelization requires
them; the Gospel will bespread
in proportion to the number,
activity and sanctity of the mi
nisters, called and consecrated
to the most sublime, the most
indispensable service—that of
salvation.*’
Pope Paul said the "Church
does not send forth paid mer
cenaries,*’ nor does she or
ganize “a network of profes
sional propagandists.*’ The
Church sends forth volunteers,
he said, "men who are free,**
and men “who surely are not
paid for what is required by
their work in terms of labor,
risk and merit.*’

Letters To The Editor
EDITOR:
After reading Father Dennis
Dullea’s comments of March
16 about his duty to condemn
articles of scandal in the Bulle
tin, I reread several recent
copies of the Georgia Bulletin.
I am sorry but I don’t know
what Father Dullea is talking
about. What’s wrong with being
a li^tlg^Jib^al ^frihat. Js t&q, .
way . you feel in your heart?
I believe that the problem is
"honesty’’ as Bishop J.A. Ro
binson expressed in his book,
"Honest to God/*
I think that the Bulletin has
done a good job here in its
attempt to be honest. I parti
cularly enjoy Father Ford’s
"Another Viewpoint” column.

A quote from Mrs. Foster
Hotard in your front page ar
ticle concerning the Board of
Lay Organizations, in which
she stated that we are too or
ganized and have too many
meetings, met a sympathetic
eye here, and helped encourage
the following version of St.
Luke’s Gospel, partly from the
Jerusalem Bible, partly from
Apocrypha:
“In the sixth month the angel
Gabriel was sent by God to a
town in Galilee called Naza
reth, to a virgin betrothed to
a man named Joseph, of the
House of David, and the vir
gin's name was Mary. He went
in and said to her, ‘Rejoice,
so highly favored I The Lord is
with you.’ She was deeply dis
turbed by these words and ask
ed herself what this greeting
could mean, but the angel said
to her, 'Mary, do not be afraid;
you have won God’s favor. Lis
ten! You are to conceive and
bear a son, and you must name
him Jesus. He will be great and
will be called Son of the Most
High. The Lord God will give
him the throne of his ances
tor David; he will rule over
the House of Jacob for ever
and his reign will have no end.’
Mary said to the angel, 'But
how can this come about, since
I am a virgin?' ‘The Holy Spi
rit will come upon you, ' the
angel answered, 'and the power
of the Most High will cover
you with its shadow.
And so the child will be holy
and will be called Son of God.
Know this too; your kinswoman
Elizabeth has, in her old age,
herself conceived a son, and she
whom people called 'barren is
now in her sixth month, for
nothing is impossible to God.’
‘I am the handmaid of the Lord,’
said Mary, ’but I am also a
member of the Nazareth
Temple, and I must submit
this matter to the Organiza
tion and Social Affairs Com
mittee of the Temple, since
what is asked of me has, broad
implications to our social

Panel Presents Image
Of Modern Priesthood
Four priests of the arch
diocese recently conducted an
informational program at the
Catholic high schools in the
Atlanta area on the subject of
vocations • to the priesthood.
Fathers Jim Scherer, Paul
Kelley, Jerry Hardy, and Tony
Morris made their panel pre
sentation at St. Pius, Marist,
St. Joseph, and Drexel high
schools. In each school, they
spoke to the Juniors and Seniors
in classroom-size groups.
, The Priests spoke of three
different areas of the ministry
and tried to present the work
of the priest as they have actu
ally experienced it. Reaction
to the panel in all the schools
was very favorable and encour
aging. "They seemed to be
genuinely Interested at all the
schools and we feel that we
were able to convince them
that the priest does a lot more
from one Sunday to the next
than just sit in the rectory,”
one of the four priests said.
RETREAT
April 7, 8 and 9 are the dates
for the first Role Call Retreat,
a chance for any high school
junior or senior, college fresh
man or sophomore to spend
some time getting a closer look
at the whole idea of a priest, his
work, his role, his worth in the
community.

er Jerry Hardy, archdiocesan
vocations director, at 233-2145.

EDITOR:
With reference to the editor
ial on letters in the March 23
issue of the Georgia Bulletin, I
wonder why is the person who
wrote something more impor
tant that that which was writ
ten? I am not the author of the
letters.
Of course it would be honest
to give the right name, but isn’t
the main thing the content of
the letter? Also don’t we have
to respect the right of a person
to remain anonymous?
Each priest spoke of a parti
cular aspect of his work as a
diocesan priest, FR. I HARDY
spoke of the normal parish
situation where the priest must
function in several areas at
once. He emphasized the free
dom he has to engage in almost
any work that he finds necessary
and valuable. He also indicated
the importance of the priest’s
role as a counsellor in dealing
with people and their problems.
"My aim in this is to enable-
people to deal more effectively
with their own difficulties and
to give them the support, en
couragement, and guidance they
need to do this,’ he said.
FR. KELLEY and FR.
SCHERER directed their at
tention to the areas of
specialized concern in which
the diocesan priest can become
involved. Fr. Kelley spoke of
the fields of inner-city work
and education; he pointed out the

important contributions that
priests could make in these
areas. At the same time he said
this was one more instance of
the individual priest’s freedom
to engage in particular work.
Fr. Scherer supported this point
by indicating that his work as
the director of Catholic Social
Services was a development
stemming from his interest in
this area while he was in the
seminary. He also talked of the
various experiences he had had
while doing postgraduate work
in psychiatric social studies at
the University of Georgia. Both
he and Fr. Kelley spoke of the
mission apostolate in northern
Georgia where so much is yet
to be done.
FR. MORRIS spoke of the
somewhat “extra-curricular”
involvements open to the alert
and willing priest in the parish.
He cited his own work in the
firemen’s strike of last summer ’
as well as a more recent
involvement in the legislative
action on the abortion and steri
lization bills. "In each case,”
he noted, “I was operating as
a priest but on purely human
principles andconvictionsof the
rights and wrongs involved.”
This panel presentation of
the priest and his work is part
of the Archdiocesan Vocations
Commission’s current effort to
show the importances of the
priesthood. In each of the
schools, a representative of
the Serra Club of Metropolitan
Atlanta accompanied ‘ the
panelists and spoke of Serra’s
interest from the layman’s point
of view, in the area of vocations
to the priesthood.
"Following up the initial
interest is our next step,” Fr.
Hardy said, ‘*To do so, we have
scheduled the ROLE CALL
RETREAT for April 7,8,9—
a chance to look into the role .
of the priest in more detail.
Also the retreat will give these
young men an opportunity to.
think through their ideas on how
they can best use their abilities
in the future. Response to the
‘Role Call* idea has been so
favorable that we have had to
change 'our plans; the place
originally secured for the week
end won’t' be large enough.”
The Retreat is limited to
Juniors and Seniors in high
school and first and second
year college students. At
present, between 15-20 young
men have indicated an interest
in pursuing these ideas'
further.”
