Bishop Elko Retains Job ;
Administrator Performs Duty
. t . -
Rector At Catholic U.
Will Leave His Position
PITTSBURGH (NC)--An offi
cial letter of the apostolic ad
ministrator of the Pittsburgh
cByizantine rite eparchy failed
to clarify reasons for the ad
ministrative changes in the dio
cese.
“Both the bishop and I will
serve in these capacities until
such time as the Holy Father
changes our status,*’ Msgr. Ro-
sack’s letter stated.
The letter of Msgr. Edward
Rosack, the apostolic admin
istrator, appointed by Pope Paul
VI, published in an issue of the
Byzantine Catholic World,
newspaper of the eparchy, said:
"The Holy Father has thus giv-
reri me full responsibility for
the eparchy and complete au
thority in the administration
of its affairs.’’
The letter said that Bishop
Nicholas T. Elko, “who has been
and continues to reside in Rome,
Italy,, remains the bishop of this
eparchy < arid so will continue
to be named in the prayers of
the: Divine Liturgy (Mass),
though he will not be exercising
any jurisdiction in the adminis
tration of our affairs."
First report that Bishop Elko
was being detained in Rome
came June 11 in a letter the
bishop, wrote to the Pittsburgh
Press, daily newspaper. The
paper reported that the Con
gregation for the Oriental
C hurch was investigating char
ges by a group of Byzantine rite
priests that Bishop Elko had
failed to implement decrees of
the Second Vatican Council.
Diocesan officials have declined
to discuss the situation.
“This has been most'unfor
tunate. We have all suffered
as a consequence— the bishop,
the priests and the laity. It is
my prayer and I am sure yours
that the communications media
will soon return its attention
to matters of national and civic
importance," Msgr. Rosack’s
letter continued.
In his official letter, Msgr.
Rosack stated: “Articles pub
lished recently in both secular
and Catholic newspapers have
been the cause, though unwit
tingly, surely, of much confu
sion and apprehension regard
ing both, the bishop and the
priests of this diocese.

“It is even more important
that each and everyone of us
exercise every care that we be
not influenced by what we have
read and subsequently become
divided among ourselves in ev
ery conceivable manner. This
will do more to cause Us suf
fering: it can weaken us. And,
our forefathers have worked too
hard to establish this diocese
and preserve our religious and
ethnic culture for us to permit
this to happen," Msgr. Rosack’s
letter continued.
WASHINGTON, D.C. (RNS)—
Bishop William J. McDonald,
since 1957 rector of the Cath
olic University of America, has
announced that he will leave that
post effective Nov. 9.
decade he has served, the stu
dent enrollment, campus facil
ities, and related services have
nearly doubled.
His resignation was sub
mitted to Patrick Cardinal O’
Boyle, Archbishop of Washing
ton and chancellor of the univer
sity. •
Bishop McDonald told news
men at a press conference, “I
made my decision not to con
tinue several years ago."
While not all rectors have
been chosen from within the
university setup, Bishop Mc
Donald had been a student and
a i professor of philosophy at
the institution. He was a vice
rector at the university when
Pope Pius XII named him to
the top post in 1957. He suc
ceeded Archbishop Bryan J.
McEntegart, who now heads the
Brooklyn diocese.
A spokesman for the univer
sity said he doubted that a
successor will be chosen be
fore “several months.’’A newly
enlarged board, which includes
four representatives of the
faculty and staff, will consider
the question of a successor.
Because Catholic U. is a ponti
fical university, the name of the
new rector will be announced
by the Pope.
Customarily, no rector
serves beyond two five-year
terms. Bishop McDonald’s
second term ends inNovember.
The apostolic administra
tor’s letter recommended two
quotations from St. Paul’s first
letter to the Corinthians. He
singled out chapter 1, verses 11
to 13: "For I have been in
formed about you, my breth
ren, by those of the house of
Chloe, that there are strifes
among you.' Now this is what
I mean: each of you says, 1 am
of Paul, or I am of Apollos,
or I am of Cephas, or I am of
Christ. Has Christ been di
vided up?"

For more than a year there
has been considerable academic
unrest at the university which
culminated in April with a gen
eral strike by its 6,000 students.
This came as a result of the
firing of Father Charles
Curran, outspoken member of
the university's theology de
partment. He was re-hired.
A native of Ireland, Bishop
McDonald completed his studies
for the priesthood there. He was
ordained in 1928 as a priest for
the San Francisco archdiocese.
During his eight years on the
West Coast he served at one
time as associate editor of the
archdiocesan newspaper, The
Monitor. He became a U.S.
citizen in 1934.

He also recommended chap
ter 3, verses 5 to 7: “What
then is Apollos? What indeed
is Paul? They are servants
of Him who you have believed—
servants according as God has
given to each to serve. I have
planted, Apollos watered, but
God has given the growth. So
then neighter he who plants is
anything, nor he who waters,
but God who gives the growth.”

Kennett replaces former Uni

Bishop McDonald, 62 years
old, stressed that his decision
was - "not hasty." Only one
rector in the school's history,
which dates to 1889, has served
more than two terms.
Bishop McDonald came to
Catholic University in 1937 to
study for his master’s degree
and remained to become a mem
ber Of the faculty. He succeeded
Bishop (then Msgr.) Fulton J.
Sheen as teacher of the course
on philosophy of religion in
1950.

Father Piefer disclosed to
newsmen (July 13) that he had
submitted his resignation July
3 to Archbishop William E.
Cousins of Milwaukee, and also
to the seminary rector.
The priest said he had been
considering the action for sev

dissatisfied with the Catholic
Church’s teachings concerning
papal infallibility, birth control
and priestly celibacy.
Father Peifer, author of a

He told newsmen that the
Episcopal Church recognizes

had not reached a decision on
whether he would become an
Episcopal priest.
