THE HOLY FATHER'S MISSION AID TO THE ORIENTAL CHURCH
Through no fault of their own, thousands of
innocent refugees in Christ’s Holy Land are
trying to pull themselves together. Hungry boys
search out scraps of food. , Little girls look
through rubble heaps for rags to cover their
tired bodies. Cripples plead for crutches; the
WITH wounded, bandages; and the elderly, a roof to
TEARS cover their heads. It goes without saying that

gratitude for all American Catholics are doing

Overlooked by the headlines from the Holy Land
are our hundreds of priests and Sisters quietly
serving the suffering. A non-Catholic observer
at a hospital in Jordan spoke of four nursing
Sisters—“They care for the wounded with su-

ARE them.” We are proud of them for they are truly
THIE peacemakers in a troubled area of the world.

girls that longed for a life of service to God now
face disappointment. Their families, impover
ished by war, have no means to support their
training as Sisters. . . . Will you help? A Sister's
training lasts two years, costs $12.50 a month,
$150 a year, or $300 altogether. Your "peace
maker” in one of our 18 countries will write to
thank you.

. A young Protestant preacher gave a fine
sermon on his first occasion in the pulpit.
Everyone congratulated him.
The next Sunday, he preached again~the

After the congregation had heard it seven
times, several of the elders objected: "That

Situation Ethics’ Priest
‘Wrong But Not All Wrong’
FARMINGTON, Conn. (NC)—
J oseph Fletcher, the controvert
sial champion of "situationeth
ics," is wrong, but he is not
all wrong, andCatholic moral
ists have something to learn
from him.
This assessment of Fletcher '
and his theories was given here
by a priest who is no stranger
to controversy himself— Father
Charles E. Curran, associate
professor of moral theology at
Catholic University of America.
Father Curran was dropped
from the CU faculty earlier this
year and then given a new con
tract and promoted following
protests by students and faculty
members. He spoke at a pas
toral institute at Holy Family
Monastery here attended by
more than 100 priests from the
U.S. and Canada.
Fletcher is a professor at the
Episcopal Theological School in
Cambridge, Mass. The situa
tion ethics or "new morality”
school of which he is a leading
exponent holds essentially that
moral decisions should not be
based on universal moral laws
but on the concrete situation
in which a person finds him self.
Father Curran described
Fletcher as "a radical situa-
tionalist*’ who, far from being
criticized only by Catholics,
"has probably been even more
vehemently attacked by Protes
tants for his views."
And Fletcher is wrong, the
Catholic University theologian
said, when he maintains that
traditional ethics insists on
strict observance of the law
even when love would demand
the contrary. “It is not a ques
tion of law versus love," Fa
ther Curran said, "but rather,
does Christian love demand
constant, universal ways of act
ing? You can’t accuse tradi
tional ethics of legalism.

Thoroughly> Thoreau
The post office is issuing a stamp in honor
of a man who:
—Personally seceded from the union;
—Refused to pay any kind of tax because he
thought the war being waged by the United
States was wrong;
—Advocated civil disobedience;
—Contended politicians and the press were
evil.
His name: Henry David Thoreau.
The 5-cent stamp carries a picture of the
outspoken author of "Walden”. He died in
.1862 at the age of 45.
Baitless
A small boy was late for Sunday school.
The teacher asked the cause.
"I was going fishing, but Daddy wouldn’t
let me go,” said the boy.
"You’re lucky,to have a fine father like
Thursday: "Notice, I Rev. A. J. Jones have
no color TV for sale. I smashed it. Don't
call 629-1313. The phone has been taken out.
I have not been carrying on with Mrs. Donnel
ly. Until yesterday she was my housekeeper.”
Friday: "Rev. A. J. Jones wishes to hire a
housekeeper. Phone 629-1313. Good pay.
Usual housekeeping duties. Love in.”
Boiled Rosary
The priest had prepared a very old lady for
Communion in her home. He noticed a pan of
water boiling on a stove next to the bed, and'
saw a rosary on the bottom. There was a
string tying it to a post of the bed. After a
few moments of consideration he asked the old;
lady why she boiled the rosary. "Well, :
Father, all feeling has gone out of my fingers;
I have to have the beads real hot in order to:
count them. This way I can pray most of the
day.”
Larceny
These stories were illegally borrowed from
Leo Aikman; other Constitution and Journal
columnists, as well as popular Catholic maga
zines. I’m not quite sure whether they specia
lize in theology or wit.

Stalin’s Daughter Assailed
MOSCOW (RNS)—A leader
of the Russian Orthodox Church
denounced Svetlana Alliluyeva,
daughter of Stalin, as a “woman
who has sold everything sacred
for dollars.”
In an interview with the Lon
don Express, Metropolitan Pi-
man of Krutitzin and Kolomna,
said Mrs. Alliluyeva had de
serted her children, become a
traitor to her people, "and then
tries to say something about re
ligion and God."
’The moral image of this
woman, who has sold out every
thing sacred for dollars, can
arouse only disgust and anger,”
he said.
The only daughter of Stalin,
who sought asylum in the Uni
ted States last April, has de
scribed her faith as a "gener
alized belief in God," and said
she had worked it out by herself
with little reference to organ
ized creeds.
But she said she was in sym
pathy with modern Hinduism,
Roman Catholicism and Chris
tian Science. "I believe all
religions are true,” she said.
"Different religions are differ
ent ways to the same God. To
me, God means the power of life
and justice. God means happi
ness to live and enjoy life on
this earth."
